hope as the search for survivors of the sunken ferry off south korea's coast enters a third day, and this morning there are more question about the captain and crew of the ill-fated ship. tragedy at the top of the world. a deadly avalanche sweeps through the climbing camp on the slopes of mount everest. astronomers discover what could be an earth cousin, a distant planet that could be suitable for future life as we know it. mark and i are very excited we have our firster first child arriving later this year. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, april 18th, 2014.

good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the rising death toll from the capsized ferry the south korea. it is now at 28. but nearly 270 are still missing and bad weather is hampering rescue efforts. amateur video of the ferry's sinking has been released. it shows passengers, many of them high school student, wearing life vests and being told to stay where they are. witnesses say that announcement could have cost 300 people their lives. the ferry was on its way to the island of jeju when it started to cinch wednesday. seth doane joins us now on the phone where the ship went down. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. certainly it's devastating to be here where family members are waiting for answers. we see cranes being brought in on ships to help the with salvage operation.

of course, the family members want this to be a rescue operation. they want to get a rescue operation, but at this point folks are certainly giving. i spent the day at a local gymnasium sleeping on the floor and spoke with one girl whose younger sister was on the boat, part of that school trip that so many students were on heading out to that island of jeju. we know that the appears to be the third officer at the helm temporarily, that certainly is being looked into. we know there was an investigation at headquarters with the owners of the ferry that was searched today. the vessel has a safety record so it was for 2013 and this year as well.

anyway ire turni they're turning to crew for answers. thank you, sect. a deadly avalanche on mout. everest this morning. they had gone out to fix ropes for climbers. the avalanche hit below camp 2 where hundreds have gathered waiting to scale the highest peak next month. diplomats have reach and agreement to ease tensions between russia and ukraine, but whether the crisis will be defused remains in question. tara mergener is in washington. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the deal came as a surprise and lays out the steps to calm violence and political unrest, but president obama say this is only a first step and he isn't sure russia will keep up its end of the garn. leaders from the u.s. and european union are waiting to

see if ukraine and russia honor an agreement to ease the tension in ukraine. president obama welcomed the breakthrough but is skeptical. >> i don't think we can be sure of anything at this point. i tlink is the possibility, the prospect that diplomacy may de-escalate the situation. >> under the deal reached thursday, all sides must refrain from bloodshed. illegal armed groups are required to disarm and pro-russian militants must turn over buildings they have seized. >> if there's not progress over the course of these next days, then there will be addition al sanctions, additional costs as a consequence. >> the deal does not mention the sanctions of russia against crimea last month. >> they're not necessarily invading with troops openly and honestly. they're playing a shadow game here in influencing what's

briefing the president said enrollment has exceeded skpe expectations. 8 million people have now signed up and he also said 35% are 35 years old or younger. >> the point is the repeal debate is and should be over. the affordable care act is working and i know the americans doan want to spend the next 2 1/2 years a fighting over the battle from the past five years. >> it's said they're inflating the numbers an isn't talking about smaller premiums and provider networks. the man accused of terrorizing drivers in kansas city is in custody. police arrested him in grandview. he's responsible for at least a dozen highway shootings over the past few weeks. three motorists were woulded. none of the injuries are life-threatening. >> in california, investigators recreated last week's deadly bus crash. they're trying to figure out how the bus driver reacted to the

possibly support life. and here in new york two good samaritans tried to pull a man out of the path of the job coming subway train. the man refused to move. dave car lan of our new york station reports. >> reporter: a sense of impending doom dominates the five-minute video. still the person behind the cell phone keeps a steady man. a man on train tracks at the 175th street station refusing to get up. thoos men jump in risking their lives to try and stay husband by they understandably panic and jump out at the a-train heads straight for them. >> oh, my gosh. that's crazy. >> they yell and this good samaritan runs but it's too late. what you can't see now under the train is the man face down in

bill and hillary clinton say they are excited that they are about to be grandparents. former first daughter chelsea is expecting a baby. jericka done duncan reports. >> reporter: chelsea clinton is pregnant with her first child, the only child of former president bill clinton and former secretary of state hillary clinton made the surprise announcement thursday afternoon that she and her husband are expecting. >> marc and i are very excited that we are having our first child arriving later this year. >> reporter: the 34-year-old revealed her news in new york while hosting the first of a series of events with her mother. >> i just hope that i will be as good a mom to my mom and hopefully children as my mom was to me. >> are you expecting a child? >> a grandchild, yes, which i'm really excited about, and it makes this work even more important. >> reporter: clinton spent most

sunday is the four-year anniversary of the bp oil spill. 11 workers on the deepwater horizon were killed when a well went out. oil was unleashed for 87 days in the gulf of mexico. and now for the first time since 2010, scientists are getting a firsthand look at the gulf floor near the spill. chip reid was there. >> reporter: 50 miles off the coast of louisiana we climbed aboard the research vessel "atlantis." this is where we found mandy joy, a university of georgia oceanographer and the leader of this expedition. she's been studying the gulf of mexico for 20 years. >> people have never seen the bottom of the ocean, can't

appreciate how just phenomenal it is. >> reporter: joy and her team of 22 scientists are spending this month diving to the gulf floor in a navy research submarine named "alvin." they want to know how it's doing after the four-year oil spill. the answer is a mile down, a two-mile descent into darkness. >> we're at the bottom at 267 meeters. >> reporter: "alvin" landed just two miles from the well that spill spilled 2 million gallons of oil in the gulf. this is the first time joy or any human has been down here since 2010. what kind of marine life did you find doubt there four years ago? >> four years ago there was nothing. i saw one crab in an eight-hour dive. it was gut-wrenching to go down there and see just nothing on the sea floor. >> reporter: how about now? >> very different. now we saw eels and skates and a

vampire squid which i had never seen before. >> reporter: what does it mean to find a vampire squid in an area that has been dead? >> it means there's a lot of food. >> reporter: that is good news, but there was potential bad news from said sediment collected from the sea floor. >> reporter: this is mud. >> and this is the oily layer. >> reporter: that's from the spill four years ago. >> yep. >> reporter: oily residue that could affect marine life in the long term. >> this material on the sea floor, there's a lot of it, it's widespread, and it's sitting there and nothing's happening to it. >> reporter: what does it mean that sea life is beginning to come back after that devastating oil spill. >> i was prepared to see little recovery but i'm so relived. >> reporter: but there's still a long way to go. >> i think there's a long way to go. this is just one spot. you can't apply one spot to the entire system. >> reporter: joy and her team plan to keep a close watch on the gulf with four or five
