one year after two explosions killed three people and wound 2d 64 others. security will be tight. governor deval patrick says there have been no specific threats and that officials are well prepared for any contingency. >> there'll be considerably more police presence. there are tactical units strategically placed at different points along the route. there are a number of undercover people and assets that will be deployed. >> before last night's game at fenway park, the red sox honored last year's victims and first responder. jericka duncan is in boston. jericka, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the marathon gets under way in just a few hours but before the race, we caught up with a

special group that took part in a nonstop running relay to show their support for boston. like most runners in today's boston marathon, this year's race has special meaning for karen mcglocklin. >> once i get on the course, i'm going to be running for the victims, and i'm going to rub my best time. >> reporter: mcglocklin was one of 2,000 runners who took part in a relay from santa monica to boston. it covered 133 miles and raced money for one fund boston, chair that that benefits bombing victims. >> it's good to know that maybe my money will help somebody get the prosthetic they need. >> mclachlin raced 10 miles in pennsylvania. this year she's back. >> now we're showing that we're

going to keep running. >> reporter: one fund for boston organizers say they have raised over $1 million. >> that's incredible to do. their lives are changed. >> reporter: to show their gratitude the boston community and 20 survivors greeted them the final stretch of the relay as runners and organizers crossed the finish line last week. and at 8:45 this morning there will be a moment of silence to remember the victims and survivors in last year's bombing. the first wave of runners take off at about 9:30, the women, and the second wave at 10:00. marlie? >> jericka duncan in boston. thank you. a 16-year-old boy who was stowed away in a wheel well of a plane. the teenager survived the 5 1/2 hour flight from san jose to maui despite sub freezing

temperatures and a lack of oxygen. they say the teen was unconscious for most of the flight. he was wandering the tarmac. he had run away apparently after an argument with his family. a series of air strikes hit what's believed to be targets in yemen over the weekend. a suspected u.s. drone strike in southern yemen yesterday killed some 30 suspected terrorists according to local leaders. an air strike saturday killed at least nine alleged militants and three according to the yemen government. they consider the al-qaeda brab. in yes, ma'am on the be the most dafrmgs in the world. vice president joe biden arrived in ukraine this morning. during his two-day visit biden plans to meet with ukraine leaders and democracy activists. holly williams has our report. >> reporter: there was supposed to be an easter truce in

ukraine. instead they're remembering those who lost their lives in another night of deadly clashes. ukraine's pro-russian separatists say their checkpoint was taked by a gunman from a far right winged group killing three. they started shooting at us and threw stun grenades said this man. a sniper was firing at people who tried to run to the people. the right wing group denies any involvement and accuses russian special forces of staging the shooting. there was clearly some kind of violent attack here last night, but so far it's hard for us to say who carried it out. this confusion in eastern you creation and that only makes the situation more dangerous. with tensions and mistrust running high, there are fears that ukraine is teetering on the brink of civil war. in geneva last week, russia, u.s., and ukraine reached a deal to end this crisis, but it had

no impact on the ground. the separatists are russian-speaking ukrainians who say they want an independent state or at least more etautono. ukraine's government and the u.s. accuse russian of stirring up the insurgency and fear a rerun of what happened in crimea last month when separatist demonstrations were a pretext for thousands of russian soldiers to move in and then annex the region from moscow. but unlike in crimea whether russians were welcomed, many here support the country's government in kiev. eastern ukraine is deeply divided and braced for more violence. holly williams, cbs news, donetsk. now to the south korea ferry disaster. the official death toll now stands at 64, but some 240 others remain missing. four more crew members have been detained by police and a just

two other crew members have been arrested for failing to protect passengers. today a south korean prosecutor announced four more crew members are being detained and could face similar charges. radio transmissions reveal the chaos and confusion on board the vessel wednesday even before it again tilting, most of the hundreds of people followed the captain's instructions to stay in their rooms, some never hearing the evacuation order that came over half an hour later. dives gained access to the ship's dining hall and one by one carried some of those who died to land. many of them missing are high school students who were on an overnight trip to the tourist island. south korean coast guard officials have deployed two underwater drones to recover more bodies. now, the cause of this disaster is not yet known. investigators are looking at a third mate who apparent lie had no steering experience and made some kind of sharp turn before

tensions in ukraine. tokyo's nikkei was unchanged. the shanghai composite lost 1.5%. hong kong's hang seng was closed. j after the long easter weekend it is record card week and some companies like nestle and mcdonald's will release their earnings. on thursday the dow fell 16 points while the nasdaq added 9. the price at the pump keeps going up. the lundberg survey says a gallon of gas has jumped 40 cents in the past ten week. 9 cents of that was in the last two weeks. the average price nationwide is now $3.69 a gallon. a superhero dominated the box office this weekend. "captain america: the winter soldier" took the top spot for the third week in a row. the comic book sequel brought in $26 million. the animated kid's flick "rio 2" held on to second place with 22$22.5 million. the religious themed flick

decades-long fight for justice. >> reporter: in the ring middleweight rubin "hurricane" carter hit his opponents. >> he had a reputation for being a hurricane. he moved like a dynamo in the ring. >> reporter: but in the summer of 1966 he was arrested for a triple murder that happened at this patterson new jersey bar. all of the victims were white. and even though he had an alibi, carter along with an acquaintance john artist was wrongfully convicted of the murders. he maintained his innocence. in 1976 carter was briefly released and granted a new trial but was convicted again. he is an author and journalist who covered carter extensively for "the new york times." his case spanned 50 years because it was so involved with race and prejudice. here's a person with a big reputation, the police are out

here's look at today's top stories. a 16-year-old stow away hit in the wheel well on a flight from california to hawaii and survived despite sub-freezing temperatures. the fbi says the boy was unconscious for most of the flight. and security will be exceptionally tight for today's boston marathon. some 36,000 runners will participate. one year ago two bombs killed three people and wounded more than 260. one person you will not see running the marathon today is man who finished the race more than a dozen times before. as jeff glor reports, he has other responsibilities. >> reporter: at 4:45 a.m. every day, bill evans goes for a seven-mile run. then he goes to work as boston's police commissioner.

>> that's the bib from last year. >> that's the one i wore last year. >> reporter: evans has run the boston marathon 18 times. this year he's in charge of protecting it. he took the job as commissioner full time in january after three decades on the force. >> that's the finish line right there. >> yep. >> and last week as they entered the final stages, evans took us inside his command center, eyes everywhere. this is not just one stadium in one place. this is a 26.2-mile route. >> right. >> how much more difficult does that make it for you? >> it's very difficult. there's eight cities and towns here that are involved. if it's a stadium, you can warn people going into stadiums, you can check bags. 26.2 miles is a lot of yardage to cover but i think we have a great plan to do it. >> i mean it's a celebratory day in the city. >> yeah. >> -- all over the state and you don't want it to feel like a police. >> exactly. we're going to have a lot of
