captioning funded by cbs 25th, 2014., good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, april 25th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it is still unclear what prompted a deadly attack at an international hospital in afghanistan. a security guard shot and killed three americans at the hospital in kabul. a fourth was wounded in what is the latest in a series of attacks on foreign civilians. tara mergener is in washington. tara, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. that's right. the reason behind the attack is still not known this morning, but the wife of one of the victims says her family has already for given the killer. 57-year-old jerry humanos got his reputation as a pediatrician ban in illinois practicing. >> our family and friends have suffered a great loss and our hearts are aching. >> reporter: humanos's wife said he was dedicated to serving

underserved populations. for the last nine years he had volunteered at cure hospital in kabul, afghanistan, training local doctors. humanos was one of three americans killed wednesday when an afghan security guard aleveragedly opened fire on a group approaching the hospital gate. >> we don't hold any ill will toward afghanistan in general or even the gunman who did this. >> the suspected gunman was wounded and captured. the attack was the most recent incident of violence against foreign civilians in the afghan capital. >> perhaps this is a random act that happened there but in most cases these are people who have been radicalized. look at them as infidels. clearly they have crossed the line. >> they're training security forces ahead of the u.s. troop withdrawal. >> afghanistan has been and continues to be a war zone and there are certainly efforts that are under way every day to work with afghan security. >> authorities are investigating why the security guard opened fire at the hospital.

and the humanos family is still working on funeral arrangements. the hospital is run by a u.s. christian charity. anne-marie? >> tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. president obama is in seoul, south korea this morning, where he had a message for the north. stop the provocative behavior. the president placed a wreath at the national war memorial before meeting with south korea's president. in a newspaper interview mr. obama said north korea can expect a, quote, firm response, if it conducts another nuclear test. yesterday in tokyo the president said it's time the north stopped being irresponsible. >> you've got to start changing your behavior, and that starts with the basic principle of deknew clarizeing the korean peninsula. now, am i optimistic there's going to be a major shift in north korea's attitude any time soon? probably not. >> the president also participated in a naturalization ceremony for u.s. soldiers and their spouses.

and mr. obama is also expected to express his condolences to the families of the victims of the south korean ferry disaster. the death toll now stands at 183. the search for the victims is increasingly difficult because divers now have to cut through cabin walls. a korean lawmaker says he has documents showing the ferry was carrying more than 3 1/2 times the amount of cargo that regulations allowed. and now to the search of the missing malaysia airline jet. a u.s. official said this morning the search is likely to drag on for years. malaysiaen officials say the search will widen. a sonar scan of the most likely site is almost finished and so far has turned up nothing. the jet vanished march 8th with 239 people on board. now to ukraine. overnight there was an explosion at a proukrainian checkpoint near the black sea at odessa.

meanwhile russia began military drills on ukrainian border including the russian air force. yesterday in washington secretary of state john kerry held russia responsible for the escalation and violence. >> let me be clear. if russia continues in this direction, it will not just be a grave mistake. it will be an expensive mistake. >> today president obama is expected to speak with several european leaders about possible new sanctions against russia. and back in this country now, speaker of the house john boehner mocked fellow republicans over their resistance to enact immigration reform. speaking yesterday in his home ohio district, a very animated boehner expressed his reluctance to do what he says is a broken system. >> here's the attitude. oh, don't make me do this. oh, this is too hard. >> boehner says he's been trying to pass immigration reform

legislation for over a year, but his colleagues would rather take the path of least resistance. severe weather will rumble across parts of the u.s. this weekend. scattered thunderstorms are expected today in the mid-atlantic states. hail and damaging wind will be the main threats. right now a line of storms stretches across the nation's midsection. forecasters say there's a significant chance of strong tornados this weekend. now, residents in johnson county, missouri, are digging out after a storm snapped trees and took down power lines yesterday afternoon. the national weather service says straight line winds gusting up to 80 miles an hour, not a tornado, tore through the area. high winds in new jersey are fueling fires. more than a half dozen wildfires burned overnight. there were 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts yesterday. 260 homes were evacuated as a precaution. residents were allowed back last night. and one school was forced to close early. now, coming up on the

[ penelope ] nespresso vertuoline. experience the revolution of coffee. a wild high-speed chase in oklahoma city. a long line of police cars pursued an r.v., its tires on fire after running over several stop sticks. the chase started near rockwell when police tried to arrest the driver on felony drug charges. after about 30 minutes the vehicle crashed into a ditch. a man and a woman, hands held high, crawled out of the wreckage and surrendered. and california police are investigating a school bus crash where a bus slammed into trees. two of the kids are in critical condition, so is the driver. witnesses say the bus was speeding when it hit a curb and went airborn. >> i remember when we went up

the hill, i went off the seat and then i just -- we stopped, and i kind of went back down straight onto the floor, and didn't know what happened until the shock and then i looked up and went, we just crashed. >> police say the bus has seat belts but they aren't sure if kids were wearing them. on sunday two former popes will become saints. this morning the vatican is preparing for the dual canonization and allen pizzey is in vatican city with the very latest. good morning, allen. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. in the square behind me there are rows upon rows upon rows of seats. they're expecting about a million people for this canonization. it's never going to happen again. two popes aet the same time, and interestingly there will be two living popes. pope francis will be residing over the ceremony and emeritus pope benedict xvi will be there as well.

the normal waiting period before you can begin the process of becoming a saint is five years. benedict waived that in the case of john paul ii when the crowds demanded he be made a saint immediately and it was only nine years ago that he died and is going to be a saint. john xxiii, the other about-to-be saint has only had one of two miracles sainted to him. they took it his life of good holiness. they're substituting it for one of two miracles. they say it's being done because they are two different guys. it's way to bring the church together. be it as it may, it's one of those things you'll never see again. and frankly i'm happy to be here, anne-marie. >> that's grail certainly historic and probably pretty moving as well. allen pizzey in vatican city. thank you, allen. on the "cbs moneywatch" tech

companies settle a lawsuit and one of the oldest women's magazines shuts down. jill morgan is at the new york stock exchange. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. the u.s. economy appears to be on the brink of taking off. the commerce department said yesterday that the demand for core capital goods jumped 2% since march, its best showing since november. and companies like g.e. and honeywell say orders are strong and they may start hiring more. tokyo's nikkei gained only a fraction. hong kong's hang seng lost 1.5%. here on the street solid earnings fell to impress investors. unless the dow is mixed, the dow is unchanged while the nasdaq added 21 points. all those recalls wiped out gm's profits. they fell 86% in the first quarter. that's its worst financial results in four years. the auto giant spent $1.3 billion to cover all the recall expenses, but gm still beat the street.

shares jumped 29 cents, far above wall street's estimates of 3 cents a share. four top tech companies have settled a class-action lawsuit. it alleged that they conspired to prevent their engineers from getting better job offers. terms against google, apple, intel, and adobe systems haven't been leased, but if they had lost, it could have cost them as much as $9 billion. netflix is about to become real tv. starting next week, the streaming video service will have its own channel on three small cable companies providing subscribers have tivo. netflix already has cable wheels in europe, but this is the first time it's been offered in the u.s. and hard times for the iconic magazine ladies' home journal, which launched 131 years ago. ad sales are down so meredith corp which owns the magazine says july will be the last issue issued to subscribers.

in sports, after a two-year layoff michael phelps dives back into competition. the record-setting swimmer took part in the 100-meter butterfly at the arena grand prix in mesa. it was his first meet since the 2012 london olympics. phelps won his preliminary heat but he finished second to fellow olympian ryan lochte. he didn't say whether he'll try to make it to the to 16 games in rio, but his mom had an opinion. >> i know your mom said in the past she'd really love go to rio. i know it's way early and i'm not supposed to ask it. >> she said no, no, no, no. she's kissing, kissing, kissing. >> mom, should he go to rio? >> whatever he wants. >> that's a good mother. >> if fill ps goes to rio, it will be his fifthlimympic game.

his 18 olympic gold are an olympic record. and the playoffs are running into trouble. oklahoma city trailing memphis by 17 points in the second half. the thunder managed to tie it up on late four-point play by russell westbrook, but when they scored, memphis leads the series, two games to one. and finally if you can't do the time, don't use the pine -- tar, that is. yankees' pitcher michael pineda will be suspended for ten games by major league baseball for using pine tar. the right-hander was tossed from wednesday night's game when umpires determine thad he had the backed substance smeared on his neck. afterward pineda said he uses pine tar to get a better grip on the ball. when we return, the race is on. we'll hit a road in texas where speed junkies are fueling up and rolling out their top cars. and rolling out their top cars. the united states postal service will get it there on time

here's a look at today's ,,, forecast in some cities around the country. dozens of car lovers from all over the world have made their way to a small strip of highway in texas. they will be taking part in tomorrow's big bend open road race which runs from ft. stockton to sanderson and back again. barry petersen got a preview. >> reporter: the west texas dawn is echoing with the rumble of revving. with the chance to drive fast, very fast, with volunteers along the route to keep stray cattle and buzzards off the highway. but first technicians check out the cars.

here's another look at this morning's top stories. president obama is in south korea where he placed a wreath at war memorial today and met with the country's prime minister. the president also took part in a naturalization ceremony for u.s. soldiers and their spouses. and officials are trying to figure out why a security officer killed three americans at a hospital in afghanistan. one of the victims was a doctor from chicago. it is the latest attack on foreign civilians in that country. ontario, california, was the scene of an emotional reunion thursday. four veterans got together more than four decades after a bomb nearly killed one of them. teri okita reports. >> reporter: 74-year-old vietnam

veteran michael gude has been wading for 44 years to thank the three men who saved his life out there. >> reporter: gude, along with team members, bob bodeman, and fox were on a reconnaissance mission in 1969 searching for american p.o.w.s when a land mine exploded. the blast ripped off gude's right leg. >> i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: the other soldiers stopped his bleeding and they were airlifted to a station but the airmen were separate and gude never saw his brothers in arms again. he didn't even know in they were alive. but then a few weeks ago his past caught up with him. >> i with u just flabbergasted. i mean our recon team's
