a deadly twist in what has been up until now a quiet tornado season. a string of destructive storms touched down across the midwest. >> we're resilient. we're going to snap back, but this is about as bad as it gets. the hunt for malaysia flight 370 enters a new faith. searchers will shift away from scanning for debris from the missing jet and instead focus on plumbing the depths of the indian ocean. and a show of solidarity. the los angeles clippers send a message to owner donald sterling after he's allegedly recorded making racist comments. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, april 28th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us.

i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. this morning recovery efforts are under way in several states after a deadly series of tornadoes drove through the midwest and southeast. at least 12 before killed and dozens injured. speaking from the philippines this morning president obama sent his condolences to the victims and says federal officials are on the ground to help. besides the tornadoes the powerful storm system produced high winds and heavy rains from texas to kentucky. this morning the system is headed east. hardest hit is an area north of little rock, arkansas, where at least 16 people were killed. this twister was on the ground off and on for nearly 80 miles. don champion begins our coverage. >> reporter: police officers in mayflower, arkansas, near little rock, went house to house sunday night looking for survivors and victims of a tornado that ripped through their small town. the powerful twister killed several people in the town and in a nearby town.

>> it was about the scariest thing i've ever been through in my life. me and my wife and dog were in the bathroom and the house came down on us. >> reporter: that tornado was just one of more than a dozen that touched down across a wide section in the middle of the country sunday. another tornado drove through quapaw, oklahoma, destroying several homes. officials in baxter city say a twister caused multiple injuries and destroyed nearly a hundred homes and businesses. strong winds of up to 80 miles an hour blew over this 18- wheeler near kansas city, missouri. the wind also toppled trees and ripped roofs off of buildings. not far away lightning was blamed for this fire at an apartment complex in topeka, kansas. officials say the full extent of sunday's damage will probably not be known until daylight. >> we're americans, we're resilient, we're going to snap back, but this is about as bad as it gets. >> reporter: tornadoes were also reported in iowa and nebraska. more severe weather is expected to move through tuesday as the

front slowly moves eastward. don champion for cbs news. an 11-month-old boy who was injured by a tornado in eastern north carolina friday died yesterday. eight tornados hit north carolina friday. one destroyed the boy's home. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says this dangerous storm system will be around for a while. >> well, the storm's ongoing. it's been a busy night for severe weather. we'll continue to see that as the storm very slowly moves eastward over the next couple of days. for today, maybe a little break for the midday hours and then we'll look at the storms refiring in the afternoon and evening. we'll see the same storm this evening. most of this happening across the mid south and deep south. gulf coast states seeing heavy rain and big storms. for today, nashville, memphis, back toward birmingham and jackson, all of this, we could see a couple of tornados, perhaps a couple of long-track

tornados, damaged wind gusts. for tuesday it's mississippi eastward over toward the carolinas. a little further to the east, greenville, columbia, and charlotte all in that risk zone. not just the severe storms but the amount of rainfall with the slow movement, locally 5 inches or more possible. the extra caution with flash flooding, the adage we always use, turn around, don't drown. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. this morning the australian prime minister announce thad the hunt for the missing malaysian jet will enter a new phase. the search will move away from the ocean surface and instead search, most material would have become waterlogged and sank. >> it could take eight months to

cover the expanded search area. flight 370 disappeared march 8 with 239 passengers and crew. the death toll from the sunken south korean ferry has risen to 188. it's believed more than 100 bodies remain trapped in the ferry. in just released video the ship's captain can be seen jumping into a rescue boat. the coast guard says the crew did not tell rescuer who they were. the south korean prime minister resigned yesterday over the handling of the sinking. president obama makes the first trip of his presidency to the philippines this morning. it's the last stop in his four-nation tour of asia. he signed a ten-year agreement giving the u.s. military greater access to philippine bases. mr. obama also announced the united states will impose stronger sanctions aimed at curbing russian actions in ukraine later today. this morning a group of about 30 pro-russian separatists took

control of a police station in eastern ukraine. meanwhile insurgent groups are leaning on a new tactic, kidnapping. as holly williams reports from the heart of separatist territory, the hostages were put on display. >> reporter: the european military observers were paraded in front of the international media by the self-appointed separatist mayor of slavyansk, the town where they're being held. the colonel and his team appeared tense and unhappy. >> we have no indication when we will be sent home. >> reporter: they said they were being treat well and showed no sign of injury. it was impossible to tell if they were under duress, though at times they sounded scripted. >> it breaks our hearts to see the poverty of the people here. >> reporter: there was no need to guess how these men were being treated. there are captured ukrainian

soldiers also being held in slavyansk. the town's new mayor told us that the european observers are spies and he wants to swap them for militants held by ukraine's government. it looks a bit as though you're using those military observers as hostages, as bargaining chips. they appeareded on our land where there's martial law, he told us, and they're prisoners of war and they can betrayeded. that was news to the observers who stress thad i have diplomatic status and hadn't undertaken any covert activity. the mayor told us today you are prisoners of war. is that also your understanding? >> we are not prisoners of war. we are the guests of the mayor. and he treated us as such. >> reporter: late today one of the europeans was released on medical grounds. the others will continue on as

the mayor's guests. holly williams, cbs news, slavyansk, ukraine. the nba's postseason is being overshadowed by racist comments allegedly made by los angeles clippers owner donald sterling. on sunday with sterling not in attendance the clippers lost game four against golden state, 118-97. despite sterling's absence, his team sent a message before the game. bee began bigad shaban has the story. >> reporter: the l.a. clippers warmed up for the game against oakland with their shirts turned inside out, hiding the team's logo. there was a rant between david sterling arguing with his girlfriend vista stiviano.

>> why? you can sleep with them, bring them in, do whatever you want. the little i ask you is not to promote it and not to bring them to my games. >> reporter: tmz say this picture of magic johnson and stiviano sparked sterling's remarks. >> if you're going to be like this, why are you owning a team in the nba which is what, over 77% african-american basketball players. so i think he should step down. >> reporter: president obama denounced the comments from malaysia. >> i suspect the nba is going to be deeply concerned in resolving this. >> reporter: chris paul said it had nothing to do with the game. they beat us and they just beat us in all aspects of it. >> reporter: basketball fan daniel hill watched the game from the team's home city. >> everyone should be galvanizing around the clippers, but it's kind of hard when you know they're owned by someone who has these types of feelings. >> reporter: the nba commissioner says the league will take action once it verifies the recording.

canonized sunday in a historic ceremony. susan mcginnis is in vatican city. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there is a traditional mass this morning in st. peter's square to celebrate the two new saints. pope francis is not here, but people are flocking here. still, it is nothing like day ago when hundreds of thousands of the faithful packed in here to witness the canonization of two popes on the same day. so now the catholic church has st. john xxiii and st. john ii. it's activity if time in the 20,000 years in catholic church history that two popes were canonized in the same day. afterward in the pouring rain hundreds lined up under umbrellas. they were waiting to be with the tombs of the two new saints. but marlie, today the sun is back out. the streets around st. peter's and the surrounding area have been cleaned up, and life here is getting back to normal.

turnaround, and a big sneaker deal for new balance. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, marlie. stocks in asia were lower amid rising violence in ukraine. tokyo's nikkei lost 1%. hong kong's hang seng fell a half percent. investors will be looking at earnings reports due this week from bellwethers exxonmobil, chevron, and conocophillips to help the major indices recover from friday's big selloff on wall street. for the week the dow lost 47 points. the nasdaq was off 19 points. six years after the great recession, it suggests it's created more low wage jobs and better paid ones. the national employment law project says lower wage jobs constituted 22% of the recession losses but 44% of the recovery growth. today there are almost 2 million
