another deadly tornado outbreak in the south for a second straight day. killer storms carve a palt of destrix. >> decision day for the nba concerning alleged racist comments by los angeles clippers owner, donald sterling. potential penalties loom. corporate sponsors begin distancing themselves from the team. high speed drama on a new york highway. video captures an alleged carjacker taken for a ride on the side of a yellow taxi. this is the news for tuesday, april 29th, 2014. good morning, good to be with you. i'm ann marine green. a second wave of deadly tornadoes that ripped through the south killed at least ten more people. this morning, as rescue crews

search through the communities, the death toll from two days of storms is at least 27. tens of thousands are without power and alabama, kentucky and mississippi. some of the worst damage yesterday was in winston county, mississippi. that's east of jackson. at least six people were killed there when a tornado pulverized entire neighorhoods. this man hid in a safe room with his family. >> amazing how the weather forecast was saying it's three minutes away, two minutes away. then our ears started popping. i can't say it sounded like a train, but it was obvious the house was going away. >> the storm system is moving east this morning. remain in effect for mississippi, georgia, tennessee, north carolina and alabama. in alabama late yesterday, several twisters caused damage and left at least three dead.

chris womack of our birmingham station reports from kimberly, alabama. >> reporter: severe storms monday in alabama caused significant damage across the state, including taking down a 113-year-old church. the kimberly church of god 15 miles north of birmingham, alabama lays in rubble. this is the old chapel. you can see there's a building right next to it still standing, but without a roof. just down the street, the kimberly fire department received significant damage. but, emblemmatic of the resiliency of the people of alabama, the church said they will still have a service on sunday. there were several firefighters inside when the storm struck. they were all able to get out and they are all accounted for. there's a lot we don't know right now because a lot of the storms hit after the sun went down. there's a lot of police and sheriff's officials blocking roads keeping people from intruding and looting so they

can assess the damage and check on their loved ones on tuesday morning. in kimberly, alabama, i'm chris womack. >> this is what the storm system looks like from a nasa satellite. you can see the development of the movement of the weather pattern including the explosive outbreak of tornadoes. 34 tornadoes reported in at least six states. another twister reported this morning. omar villafranca is north of little rock where a powerful tornado killed at least 15 people sunday. a powerful storm in an 80 mile path of destruction. omar, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann marie. the tornado that tore through here in mayflower, arkansas and vilonia had a speed of 136 miles an hour. bemind me, it's enough to pulverize homes.

this aerial pictures show the scale of damage in both towns. nick helped rescue a little girl thrown 50 feet from her home and continued to look for others. >> it was a deal we had to go from one to the next to the next and try to help the one that could be helped. >> reporter: in vilonia, people are trying to pick up pieces despite losing their home. this woman thanked crews who helped her salvage pictures of loved ones. >> memories i can put my hands on. my kids aren't home all the time anymore. >> reporter: recovery efforts could take weeks, even months. the governor of arkansas requested federal aid to clean up and rebuild. anne-marie? >> thank you in mayflower, arkansas. eric fisher says the severe weather will last into tomorrow. >> after a sad night with many deaths reported, destructive storms hitting several towns, it's going to be another long day for weather.

we have storms ongoing. as we head toward the evening, the storms will flair again. the afternoon, evening, storms popping. almost the same area as yesterday, just further to the east. heavy rain will be a threat. the storms continue as we head through the night and into wednesday. they move to the east coast. more heavy rainfall and the potential of severe weather. break it down day by day. for today, we are watching an aary a cross alabama, mississippi and the florida panhandle. anyone in the yellow shading could see tornado, large hail and damaging wind gusts. the hubs in birmingham, atlanta and charlotte will be impacted by the weather. could see strong tornadoes like yesterday. then we look into wednesday. the east coast, richmond, charlotte, charleston, tallahassee, all have potential for severe weather. not just the tornadoes, but the rain has been a big part of the story. more heavy rainfall, a swath of rain from new york city to the gulf coast.

be very careful, everybody. heed any warnings issued the next couple days. i'm eric fisher, cbs news. this afternoon, the nba will announce the results of its investigation into los angeles clippers owner, donald sterling. sterling made racist comments during a recorded conversation. the nba players association is calling for a swift and serious punishment. last night, outspoken dallas mavericks owner, mark cubin called the comments abornt. he didn't say the league should make him sell the team. >> i think it's a slippery slope when you start trying to remove people from the nba or any organization based on the private thoughts they have at home. >> meanwhile, the controversy is costing the clippers money. at least 15 sponsors ended or suspended their ties with the team.

bigad shaban reports. >> reporter: the l.a. clippers are losing a growing number of sponsors. fallout is a result of a recording that surfaced from the clippers owner taking racist comments. fans and critics are calling for new ownership. magic johnson denied rumors that he was interested in buying it. >> i never said that, so, that's not the case. >> reporter: the nba is expected to soon reveal details about its investigation into sterling and the recording. he worked with sterling in 2000 as a clippers special assistant coach. >> we don't need smebody like donald sterling casting all this doubt and ugliness. >> reporter: sterling was allegedly arguing with his girlfriend on recordings posted on tmz. >> don't come to my games. don't bring black people. don't come. >> reporter: the attorney says it recordings are authentic, but

says she did not leak the tapes. the l.a. chapter will no longer honor him with a lifetime achievement award amid the allegations. >> we have to err on the side of caution than to do something with advanced knowledge that may by harmful to what we represent. >> reporter: clippers coach, doc rivers say the the best response his players can give the controversy is a win on the court. cbs news, bigad shaban, los angeles. this morning, north korea conducted an artillery drill with south korea. both countries regularly kuhn duct fire drills near a disputed maritime boundary. the line was drawn up at the close of the korean war. the north says the boundary should run further south. the white house has steps to prevent sexual assaults on college campuses. one in five female college students is assaulted. the report finds schools should

station wcbs tells us, the suspects terrifying ordeal nearly cost him his life. >> reporter: drivers on the expressway doing a double take when they saw this, a man clinging to the outside of a taxi. watch as he stayed perched on the running board, his feet falling off, dragging on the ground. he nearly loses his grip. he managed to stay on. mohammed was driving the taxi. he says the man seen here hanging off the side tried to carjack him around 2:00 a.m. >> if i stop the car, he gets in my car. if he get in my car, i don't know what he has, a weapon, a knife, anything can happen to me. my safety first. i called the police. i slowed down for him because i didn't want him to get hurt. >> if he fell, instant road kill. >> reporter: carter shot this video with his cell phone, barely believing his eyes. >> i was getting nervous. the guy was on the hood at the time, on top of the car, then trying to break the glass with

his hand. it was like a hollywood story, almost. >> reporter: the real story is stranger. the man you see here is 26-year-old matthew mccorkle of the bronx. investigators believe he tried to carjack the taxi around 2:00 a.m. but the driver hit the gas. he hung on for eight miles until the cab hit a traffic jam on the new england freeway. then he hopped off the taxi, carjacked another vehicle, then crashed it. that's when police caught up to him. >> it's even more insane. >> reporter: he has a lengthy rap sheet, criminal possession of a stolen weapon, driving with a suspended license and drug violation. all that before this wild ride through the bronx. >> that was wcbs's kathryn matthew mccorkle has been charged with driving under the influence, robbery and grand larceny. still ahead, the weather. in money watch, self-driving

bell and the nasdaq sank one point. if you use internet explorer, download and update asap. microsoft says a hacker can take complete control of your computer. it affects version six through 11. homeland security says to download a security tool kit from microsoft or use another browser. toyota is moving from california to texas. the auto giant says the move will bring together employees from all over the country. they are offering relocation packages to 1,000 employees who work in los angeles. it will open in texas in 2017. google's self-driving cars are changing lanes from the highway to the city. the internet giant revealed yesterday the robotic vehicles are zipping down the roads of a town near their san francisco headquarters, but they need to do more testing before they are

able to drive in another city. anne-marie? >> depending on the city, they will need a lot more testing. jill wagner at the new york stock change, thanks, jill. the miami heat is moving on in the playoffs. the heat turned their jersey's inside out against the racist remarks made by donald sterling. after tip off, it was all miami. lebron james scored 39 points. they completed a four-game sweep of charlotte. the spurs pull even in their series against dallas. a big three-pointer to hold off a late rally by the mavs to give the spurs a 93-89 win. the series is tied at two games a piece. when we return, troubled waters for paul simon. the singer and his wife in court over a domestic dispute. we'll hear from both. domestic dispute.

here is a look at today's forecast in cities around the country. a pennsylvania widow may be kicked out of her home because she didn't pay a $6.30 late fee. a judge ruled she was given plenty of notice to pay the nominal amount. in 2011, she was forced to auction off her house, but is still living there. the 53-year-old mother of three says she'll appeal. single paul simon and his wife edie brickell were in court. the couple was arrested saturday night. police say they got into a fight. there were minor injuries. the celebrity couple put their differences aside yesterday and held hands. they told the judge there was no need to issue a protective order.

here is another look at this morning's top stories. recovery efforts are under way in mississippi and alabama for the second day in a row, the south was struck by a deadly string of tornadoes. at least ten people were killed and dozens of buildings were destroyed. officials say most of the people killed by sunday night's storms in arkansas were in their homes. at least 17 people died in sunday's outbreak in three states. rescue crews are still searching for victims. vilonia, arkansas knows all too well the destructive power of tornadoes.

it was hit twice in three years. we spoke with the people there. >> reporter: describe to me what you were thinking when you saw the tornado coming at you. >> time to take cover. it was getting close. >> reporter: pastor james smith and his wife, bonita took cover in this hallway. >> i was just praying that god would keep us safe. >> reporter: their home was damaged and so was the church where smith has been pastor 22 years. damage from the 2011 tornado was so severe, the church had to be torn down. that storm also leveled many homes. his congregation just finished rebuilding the church sanctuary this month. >> you look at this church and there's damage all around it. some might say this is a miracle it's still standing. >> it could be a miracle it's still standing. just a block over, there's a whole street with every house gone. >> reporter: this is going to test their faith.
