7:01 am
go! >> a second wave of killer storms rips through the south. >> 11 people reported dead across mississippi, alabama, tennessee. >> dozens upon dozens of buildings and homes have been destroyed. >> it's moving to the right. >> today the nba is set to announce what, if any, action it is taking against los angeles clippers owner, donald sterling's alleged racist remarks. >> several sponsors severing their relationship with the team. >> for people to say, well, alleged and this stuff. what, we've got to have a picture with him with a robe and a hood and hold a burning cross? >> in georgia, at least six people are injured after a shooter opened fire at a fedex sorting center north of atlanta. >> take a look at this video. a man goes for a wild ride on the outside of the cab. >> he can't have a weapon, he can't have a knife. >> a close call for passengers in australia when the engine caught fire shortly after
7:02 am
takeoff, the pilot had to make an emergency landing. >> do not use internet explorer. a serious security flaw in the browser could give hackers access to your computer. >> i'd like to be funny so i'm relaxed and you're funny, we'll trade. i'll give you relaxed, you give me funny. >> yeah, i'm not sure if you could give me relaxed really, although i try to take it in a pill form. >> and all that matters. >> another noticeable change in late night tv on cbs. >> i will be stepping down as the host of this show. thanks, everybody, that was quite convincing. >> on "cbs this morning." >> i know that you're of ukrainian heritage. what do you make the situation. first of all -- >> with putin? you want to know? >> yeah. >> this morning's "eye opener" is presented by toyota. let's go places.
7:03 am
welcome to "cbs this morning." good morning, norah. >> good morning, charlie. welcome back. it is day three of a powerful tornado outbreak in the southern half of the country. the confirmed death toll stands at 29. >> one survivor in mississippi said, quote, for about 30 seconds it was unbelievable. as awful as anything we've gone through. vicente arenas is just north of birmingham. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and good morning to our viewers in the west. what you're looking at behind me was at one time a fire department. it was blown to pieces. if you look this way, you can see two fire engines. the roof of the building was thrown to the back of the property. now it's just a bunch of twisted metal and broken boards. this is just one example of what emergency crews have been dealing with in this community near birmingham.
7:04 am
>> big, big tornado. >> reporter: the line of deadly twisters roared across the south into the early morning hours, leveling buildings and knocking out electricity to tens of thousands. its speed and power leaving many in shock. >> it's one of those things you don't realize really what's going on until afterwards and you realize this i mean really did hit us flat out straight on. >> reporter: here in kimberly, a tornado demolished this 113-year-old church where a group took shelter in the basement. nearby dozens found refuge at this civic center. >> i was afraid. i was afraid for my life. >> reporter: hours earlier, a string of twisters barrelled through mississippi. >> it's moving to the right. >> reporter: this was just one of many tornados that touched down. >> it just so happened we heard a large boom! and a tree fell on our house, our porch fell in, the windows broke. >> reporter: another twister tore through the town of tupelo, mississippi, shattering glass
7:05 am
and gutting homes and businesses. >> this is a tornado ripping through the city of tupelo as we speak. >> reporter: even this local weatherman was forced to take cover. >> go! now. >> reporter: while some lost everything, they credited an early warning with saving lives. >> the weather forecasts were saying it's three minutes away, two minutes away and then my ears started popping. can't say it sounded like a train, i've heard that, but it was obvious that the house was going away. >> reporter: because the storm struck at night, this morning is the first time homeowners are getting a chance to begin the cleanup process. now that the sun is coming up, people are getting their first chance to see how much devastation the storm caused. >> all right, vicente, thank you. and this deadly tornado outbreak began on sunday. nasa satellite images show how big and fast the storm system grew. take a look at this. it spawned a giant tornado, cutting a path through a number of counties north of little rock. dean reynolds is in vilonia, arkansas, an area where that tornado killed at least ten
7:06 am
people. dean, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, there's a curfew in the town of vilonia in effect until later today to guard against looting. but we managed to get inside the police barricades yesterday to see the full extent of the destruction. main street in vilonia was reduced to a twisted mess, leveled by powerful 130-plus-mile-an-hour winds. >> we're in it right now. we're in a tornado. >> reporter: the massive twister tore through nearly 30 miles of the region late sunday. >> was this the whole thing here, this building? >> this was our therapy clinic. >> reporter: tommy bates found his physical therapy clinic in ruins. he had spent the night in a city shelter with his family. when the worst of the storm passed, he learned he had lost his home. >> a family of three came crawling in covered in debris, covered in blood. they were neighbors of mine. that's when i knew this was real. >> reporter: your house and your business were ruined? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: down the road, we
7:07 am
found another local business owner, stanley gordon. he rode out the storm in a bunker beneath his now demolished insurance company. >> the tornado blew it open. it's a big steel door and it blew it open so we're fortunate somebody didn't get sucked out, but we didn't. >> reporter: while little remains of his shop on main street, unlike bates and many others, gordon's home is at least intact and his family is safe. >> we're extremely fortunate. we're a lot more fortunate than a lot of people here that lost their lives or part of their family. >> reporter: the weather forecast for here says there's a good chance of rain later today, which will only add to the misery of the people who have suddenly found themselves homeless. >> dean, thanks. tornado watches are posted this morning in parts of georgia. meteorologist megan glaros of cbs station wbbm is tracking those powerful storms. >> good morning, and good morning to those of you in the west. there is a risk for severe weather today that extends from
7:08 am
michigan all the way down to the gulf coast and over to the east coast. that encompasses 16 states at risk for severe storms. the core of the most intense activity will be centered once again in mississippi and in alabama where there could be strong tornados again as well as a time frame that will push it into the latter half of the afternoon and into the evening. big picture will show those storms focusing on the east coast for tomorrow while the west stays relatively dry. but you're going to see some incredible warmth in the west over the course of the next few days. los angeles could top 90 degrees today, portland 78. there will be an avalanche risk as well across the olympics and the cascades. >> all right, megan, thank you. we could learn today if los angeles clippers owner donald sterling will be punished for alleged racist comments. the nba is under growing pressure from players, fans, other owners and corporate sponsors. carter evans is at staples center in l.a. where the clippers next playoff game is tonight. carter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and good morning to our viewers in
7:09 am
the west. in just a couple of hours, the nba will hold a press conference in new york to discuss the investigation into donald sterling's alleged rant. back here in los angeles, many are wondering if sterling will even be allowed inside staples center tonight when the clippers take the court. in playoff action, the miami heat showed solidarity with the clippers by turning their shirts inside out, in protest to owner donald sterling's alleged racist remarks. more than a dozen sponsors announced they're backing away from the team, calling the comments offensive, reprehensible and completely unacceptable. >> i would say they lost somewhere between $15 and $23 million. >> reporter: bill sutton is a former vice president of business operations for the nba. >> this could be a long, lingering effect and ultimately result in having to force the sale of the team because it's the only financially viable way for the team to exist. >> rou a racist, mr. sterling?
7:10 am
>> reporter: in los angeles, the clippers owner is keeping a low profile but was spotted as he left a restaurant on sunday with his wife. >> are you a racist? the accusations, are they true? >> forget it. it's not true. >> and why are you taking pictures with minorities? why? >> reporter: the nba has hired an audio forensics expert to evaluate if the voice heard on the recording is sterling's. >> did that sound like his voice on the recording? >> it sounded like him to me. >> reporter: basketball legend kareem abdul-jabbar was a sichbt coach for the clippers in 2000. >> when you go to that great of length to discriminate against people, there must be something in it for you. either you enjoy it or it's a power thing. if it's true, i don't think he's fit to be an nba owner. >> reporter: amidst an increasing number of calls for sterling's removal, dallas mavericks owner mark cuban warned against any precedent the move might set. >> it's a slippery slope when you start trying to remove
7:11 am
people from the nba or any organization based off of their private thoughts that they have at home. >> reporter: if sterling is forced out, magic johnson is reportedly interested in the team. but the lakers legend danced around the question. >> the team is owned by a man already. >> reporter: and that man is under fire at every turn. while everyone waits for the nba to act. >> if nothing happens, then you can boycott it in the off-season and not just the clippers, the whole league has to. because if he's not thrown out, you've got to do something. >> reporter: los angeles mayor eric garcetti is urging the nba to take swift, strong action. there is a protest scheduled here this evening right outside of staples center. the tone of that protest will depend largely on the outcome of this news conference with the nba a little bit later today. >> carter, thanks. cbs news legal analyst jack ford is looking at the nba's options in this case. jack, good morning. >> good morning, charlie. >> suppose they can absolutely
7:12 am
identify this as sterling's voice. what are the nba's options? >> you know, the commissioner, as with most commissioners of professional leagues, has very broad powers. those broad powers allow him to act, the magic words are in the best interests of the league if there's conduct detrimental to the league. we've seen in the past where commissioners have stepped up and said to owners i'm going to suspend you for a period of time and impose a fine because we believe your conduct was indeed detrimental. so i think you're certainly going to see -- it sounds like you're going to see some period of suspension, some type of a fine. >> but can they force the owner to sell the team? >> that's the tougher question. could they try? yes. would there be huge legal hurdles? absolutely. you'd have antitrust issues. it would be tough to go into a court of law and say we're going to force him to give up his property, what he owns, because of comments. not conduct, comments. as trouble, as awful as they may be. so that, i think, would be a very big hurdle for them to get over. >> this is not just about the
7:13 am
clippers, though, this is about the entire nba. and the commissioner works for the owners of the teams. so how does that factor into his decision-making? >> there are some difficult ironies here. the commissioner is hired and works for the owners, yet here the commissioner is saying i am going to tell you what you're going to do and i'm going to impose sanctions on you as owners. and the owners, we heard mark cuban say this, the owners are in a tough situation because they want something to be done, but as mark cuban said, the notion, setting a precedent saying we can take your team away from you, again, for not conduct, you're not a financial disaster, but we can take your team away from you because of what you thought and what you said, the owners i think would have a hard time with that. they might not say it, so hey're in a difficult situation. >> i think you're going to see something definitive and fairly soon. >> jack ford, thank you so much. a shooting early this morning at a fedex warehouse near atlanta. six people are reported injured. pis dead from an apparent unman
7:14 am
suicide. at least one of the victims may be critically hurt. there is no word yet on a motive for the attack or the suspect's possible connection to the sorting facility. and the white house releases a new report today urging colleges and universities to crack down on sexual assault. it says one in five female students are victims. the obama administration task force calls for better training of victim advocates, making reports more confidential and better investigative work. a new website, notalone.gov allows victims to file a federal complaint. secretary of state john kerry is back tracking after controversial comments about israel. at a closed door meeting in washington friday kerry said if middle east peace is not achieved, israel could become an apartheid state. that remark triggered a storm of criticism. kerry released a statement last night saying, quote, if i could rewind the tape, i would have chosen a different word. kerry says he's been a staunch supporter of israel for years.
7:15 am
even though they call his comment offensive. eric cantor believes kerry should apologize. a congressman from new york faces a long list of federal charges this morning. congressman grimm pleaded not guilty monday to mail, wire and tax fraud. he says the government is trying to frame him. nancy cordes is on capitol hill where grimm is just the latest lawmaker to face trouble. nancy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. congressman grimm announced last night that he would be temporarily resigning, not from congress but from one of his congressional committees, the financial services committee. he says he doesn't want to be a distraction as he fights what he calls trumped-up charges. grimm headed back to washington late monday, but was absent from votes on the house floor. >> the yeas are 384 and the nays are 0. >> reporter: earlier in the day he surrendered to the fbi in new york and pled not guilty to a 20-count federal indictment. >> i know i'm a moral man, a man
7:16 am
of integrity, and i also know that i have a lot more service and leadership to provide this country. >> reporter: the charges stem from grimm's management of the manhattan restaurant he started in 2006 called healthalicious. according to the indictment, grimm engaged in schemes to fraudulently underreport the wan wages he paid his workers and the true amount of money the restaurant earned. >> when it came to his restaurant, michael grimm didn't make a tax -- >> reporter: grimm managed to hide about $1 million. >> mail fraud, wire fraud, health care fraud, perjury, obstruction of an official proceeding and the hiring of undocumented workers. >> reporter: grimm isn't just a u.s. congressman, he's a former fbi agent. in a statement, the fbi's assistant director said grimm broke our credo at nearly every term. the two-term republican notoriously threatened to throw a local reporter off a

congressional balcony earlier this year after the reporter asked about his legal troubles. he's the third republican congressman to run into trouble in the past few months. florida's trey radle resigned in january after buying cocaine from an undercover police officer and louisiana's vance mcallister announced he won't seek re-election after he was caught on video kissing a female staffer who was not his wife. neither of them face jail time while the crimes grimm is accused of carry the possibility of years in prison and he is still under investigation, norah and charlie, for alleged improprieties in his campaign fund-raising. >> nancy, thanks. nato says it sees no sign russian troops are withdrawing from the border with ukraine. those forces began drills near the border last week. holly williams is in donetsk, ukraine, where pro-russian insurgents are flexing their
7:18 am
muscle. holly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there's been more violence in eastern ukraine where the government is struggling against pro-russian separatists. the mayor of the city was shot in the back yesterday and is now fighting for his life. we've also seen clashes here in donetsk. ukrainians who support their country's government marched through donetsk flanked by lines of police. they were expecting trouble and didn't have to wait for long. dozens of pro-russian separatists attacked them with batons and baseball bats. and then the two sides fought running street battles. across eastern ukraine armed russian-speaking militants have taken over public buildings, demanding an independent state. ukraine and the u.s. blame russia for stirring up unrest here and helping the insurgents, and there are many people here
7:19 am
who agree. they want a unified ukraine, resent russian interference and are making their voices heard. we met a pro government activist delivering razor wire to a national guard base in donetsk. the nearby base was attacked by separatist and he told us the troops here are nervous. could there be a civil war here? >> when they sent russian troops in ukraine. without russian russian army, we will not have a civil war. >> reporter: russia denies any involvement in the insurgency here and instead blames the u.s. for backing ukraine's government and causing the unrest. norah. >> all right, holly, thank you. it is 7:19. ahead on "cbs this morning" we're there as a neighbor rescues a ,, the offshore winds kicking into the gear overnight.

they will hear arguments over whether police need a warrant to search cell phones after they make arrests. it is the test for the 18th century amendment prohibiting unreasonable search and procedure. it will affect millions of americans. rikki klieman is here. >> good morning. >> how big is this? >> i think this is really huge. i think this is one of the most important decisions the supreme court will make this year. we'll know the result in june. >> because? >> because it affects all of us. you know, when we think about the fourth amendment, the right from unreasonable search and procedures, about our houses, our personal effects and papers. we think about the fourth amendment in terms of criminals. the reality is we are all subject to this. what happens if you are stopped when driving because you have a broken taillight? what happens if it turns out the police, because perhaps they see
8:34 am
something in your car that is suspicious or you are drunk and they decide to arrest you. when they arrest you, you have your wallet, another is your keys. they can take that, that's fine. you have a cell phone, can they look through it? i would think the justices are going to say that's too far in a technological age. >> what are the arguments here for why the police should be able to look at your cell phone? >> well, the police say two things that are critically important. one is there may be a destruction of evidence. the other is the attitude of officer safety. what you are looking for here, we can think of this, the boston bomber is a good example. when you go to arrest mr. tsarnaev, if he has his cell phone, you want to look in it right away because a bomb might be set off. when someone who is involved in a drug deal as a cell phone, is there a way that somehow that
8:35 am
cell phone could be shut off? is there a way that all the information could be destroyed? so, that's what the government is saying. wait a minute, we need to hold on to this. the counter argument is, look, how simple is this? let's take the phone. secure the phone. there's plenty of ways to be able the information doesn't disappear. let's go to a judge. >> get a warrant. >> do it the fair way and get the warrant. >> it's split hairs? >> it's not splitting hairs to say you want a warrant. that's what the judicial segment was about as part of the branches of government, leave it to the court. >> all right, we are going to leave it to you. we'll be watching. i know you will be back. >> thank you. another late night tv shuffle is in the works. craig ferguson revealed he is giving up the late late show. it comes after david letterman announced his retirement plans. lee cowan reports, ferguson made
8:36 am
his announcement in his own, unique way. >> at the end of this year, i will be stepping down as the host of this show. >> ahh! >> thanks, that was quite convincing. >> reporter: he was an unlikely late night talk show host, in this country, anyway. he was as thick as they come. he stood out and audiences ate it up. his monologues were as wacky and unpredictable. >> this is the trouble i have. how does he get into the justice league headquarters. there's no rivers or streams leading into it. he arrives through the toilet. >> reporter: he rarely scripted anything during the interviews. >> when you live with somebody and you don't want sex and you pretend it's somebody. >> i don't know what it is about me and fishing. when i go out, i always get a bite. i don't know why. >> i bet you do.
8:37 am
yeah. >> reporter: the unique style that earned him a peabody, emmy and cult following. >> how you doing there? yeah, yeah. >> not david letterman's chair. >> what are you going to do? >> i'm going to get disassembled. >> reporter: ferguson didn't do it alone. he had a side kick, geoff. one of the oldest gags in the book, two people in a horse costume. last night, after a decade long run, the famously open host said it was time to close the barn door. in a statement, ferguson added cbs and i are not getting divorced, we are consciously uncoupling but we'll spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton. both the characters and ferguson, himself, will be on the air until december. that means whoever takes over his time slot will likely do it
