this is the "cbs evening news." >> jeff: good evening, everyone, i'm jeff glor with a western edition of the broadcast. it is called the hair hang act. acrobats suspend in the air performing a sort of human chandelier. today it went terribly wrong in providence, rhode island. this is video from inside the ringling brothers and barnum & bailey performance. a camera phone was recording as eight performers dropped to the ground below. we begin with don dahler in providence, don? >> reporter: jeff, the show had just about reached the halfway point when the accident happened. shocking the audience of 4,000 into a stunned silence. it was a dramatic sight on its own. aerial acrobats hanging only by their hair, but then screams as the structures they were suspended on collapse and fell about 30 feet. the eight area performers as well as several performers on the ground were taken to the hospital.

providence safety commissioner steve perry says some of the injuries are serious. >> they're in critical but expect to be non-life threatening injuries. a lot of broken bones, et cetera. >> the audience included families, like katelyn king who attended with her father. >> i was upset. because i felt really, really bad for them. and all of a sudden ambulances came flooding in. and also for the kids, the little, little kids, they started leaving and it was not good. >> audience members have been posting pictures and videos like these all afternoon. the performers are called hairialists as seen in this video from another performance. parent company feld entertainment says they adhere to a variety of federal and state regulations and all of their equipment is inspected when it's loaded into an arena. the federal occupation safety and health administration is currently investigating the cause of the accident. the last time the ringling brothers had an accident in a show was in may 2004. it involved an aerial performer who later died from her

injuries. a spokesman for feld entertainment says an accident with more than one performer is unprecedented. >> the circus arrived in providence last week and was scheduled to continue through tomorrow. even though the rest of today's shows were canceled, so far tomorrow's shows are still set to go on. jeff? >> jeff: don dahler, thank you very much. >> russian president putin and german chancellor angela merkel discussed the crisis in ukraine by phone today. they called for quote, "effective international action to reduce violence." but today violence was only increasing. boiling over, especially in the port city of odessa. here's clarissa ward. >> reporter: fresh violence gripped ukraine's third largest city again today. as pro-russian demonstrators stormed odessa's police headquarters. they demanded the release of pro-russian activists who were arrested after violent clashes on friday left more than 40 dead. "they didn't give them anything to eat," this protester said.

"no water, that's not humane." the police did not resist the crowd for long. and dozens of detainees were released, emerging from the building triumphantly. today ukraine's interim president lashed out at police for failing to maintain order and accused russia of engineering the clashes. >> "the destruction and division of the country is russia's intention," he said. >> reporter: but here in eastern ukraine, many blamed the violence on the government in kiev. the military offensive to take back towns that have fallen to pro-russian rebels has been greeted with anger and resistance by locals. >> "i make an appeal, russia, help us," this woman said. "they'll wipe us off the face of the earth." >> listening to that woman's words, jeff, one really has a strong sense of just how much misinformation is being

disseminated on the ground here. there are a lot of lies, a lot of rumors, a lot of propaganda and that of course is only fueling tensions. >> clarissa ward, thank you very much. >> the president of south korea met today with families who lost loved ones in last month's ferry disaster. the families are demanding answers, especially after new documents show the ferry was routinely and dangerously overloaded on hundreds of trips. here's kelly cobiella. >> reporter: in her second visit to the families of the ferry victims, south korean president park geun-hye promised that those responsible for the disaster would be severely punished. the message came as new documents surfaced today, showing the ferry was overloaded on 75% of its trips since march 2013. early last year shipping inspectors ordered the ferry company to load less cargo in order to safely carry more passengers. it's cargo limit was dropped to 987 tons.

but according to the associated press, documents show the ferry was carrying well over 3,000 tons, nearly four times it's limit when it sank last month. even though the captain filed paperwork saying the ferry was underweight. he's now under arrest. >> a rally of thousands turned angry in central seoul saturday, calling for the president's resignation. victim's families are furious the government left regulation in the hands of the shipping industry and safety industries that did not share information. at least 15 people are under arrest including the captain and crew. but the government is now under intense pressure to take over the regulation of passenger ferries and overhaul the system. jeff? >> jeff: kelly cobiella, thank you. >> police in northern ireland today released gerry adams, the irish nationalist leader they have been questioning for the past five days. some believe adams ordered the 1972 killing of jean mcconville, a belfast mother of ten, the

owner for a long time. that he wants to stay the owner. and i said this will be a long, protracted fight and a painful thing for that great american city. >> sterling has been banned for life from making any business decisions involving the team or attending the games. but that doesn't apply to his wife shelly who claims to be the co-owner. she was there last night and issued this statement. shelly was one of the defendants along with her husband in a housing discrimination lawsuit >> the nba could begin vetting potential offers to buy him out as early as this month. bryan kearney is a season ticketholder. >> what does the uncertainty,

you think, mean to the franchise now? >> who's going to be the owner? is it going to be his wife, are they going to keep her in the family, is it going to be magic johnson, oprah winfrey? we don't know. >> the clippers will play on and so will the drama off the court. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. >> jeff: 60 people were injured in a stampede in las vegas. it happened after the mayweather-maidana fight at the m.g.m. grand. at one point in the chaos, a crush of fans overran the site's media center before order could be restored. 26 people were taken to the hospital, none of the injuries considered life threatening. >> congress gets back to work tomorrow, after a night of poking fun at themselves and washington at the annual white house correspondents dinner. the president was the guest of honor and delivered the night's signature monologue. mark albert has more. >> last year was rough. sheesh. >> he may be the leader of the free world, but saturday night president obama was comedian in chief. >> my fellow democrats don't

>> things turned frightening fast this afternoon at travis air force base in northern california. when a biplane participating in

an air-show there crashed into the ground as spectators watched. you can see the black smoke billowing from that crash site this afternoon. >> a new study based on data from the centers for disease control says hundreds of thousands of kids who say they are the victims of bullying are bringing some kind of weapon to school. with more here's mark strassmann. >> reporter: the report analyzes a detailed survey of 15,000 high-school students who were asked questions about bullying. the survey, conducted by the centers for disease control found that 20% of those high- school students reported being victims of bullying within the last 12 months. even more concerning to researchers, an estimated 250,000 bullying victims were considering bringing guns, knives, and clubs to school within the last 30 days of the survey being conducted. senior investigator dr. andrew adesman is with the cohen children's research center of new york. >> they're telling us that there's practically one child in every classroom carrying a

weapon. >> the research team also found that each of the following four risk factors increased the chance of a bullying victims carrying a weapon to school. not going to school due to feeling unsafe in school or on the way to school. having property stolen or damaged. having been threatened with or injured with a weapon and having been in a physical fight. >> this is a group that's not only traumatized psychologically and worried physically but they also pose a threat to the rest of the student body. >> the study showed that bullying victims were more likely to be from lower grades, female and white. the study found that bullying victims were more likely to carry a weapon to school than kids who were not bullied. lisa lovolos of northeast philadelphia brought a pairing knife to school after months of being bullied. she was arrested and suspended for five days. >> and i was wrong to have it, but i mean, i felt like i needed something to protect myself. >> reporter: adesman says

educators will need to do a better job of not only focusing on school bullys but their victims as well. mark strassmann, cbs news, atlanta. >> jeff: two new study could have promising implications for alzheimer research. in both studies scientists gave older mice the blood of young mice. doing so appeared to reverse memory loss and other age- related brain impairments. one of the studies showed exposing the mice to restored more blood flow to the brain. coca-cola announced it is removing a controversial ingredient from powerade, brominated vegetable oil had been the subject of an on-line petition started by sarah kavanagh, a mississippi teenager because of its links to a flame retardant. pepsi removed the ingredient from gatorade drinks last year. next up here, are people investing for retirement jumping back into the stock markets at the wrong time?

our business analyst jell schlesing is here with more. what are the latest numbers telling you. >> according to aon hewitt, of every dollar people are putting into their retirement funds, they are putting 67% into stock investments. that is the highest pace since the great recession. in fact, we dropped down to only 56% of dollars going not stock market when we were at the worst part of the financial crisis. >> jeff: so the concern is people are getting in too late at this point? >> yeah, i mean, it's not any coincidence that people seem to feel better after the market has already gone up 30% returns last year on top of lots of years before that where the stock market has gone up. but in is a problem. because it's an illusion. people seem to have am-- amnesia, they forget about the bad times. if you look back and say hey, how am i doing, people tend to underperform the stock index they are trying to be invested in it if you look at t the average stock investor, 5% return over a 20 year period, the index up over 9.2% so we were's

lacking the index simply because we jump in at the wrong times and bail out at the wrong times. >> jeff: the old adage was sell in may and go away. is that a good idea this year? >> well, you know, it has worked statistically over time. it's little strange that it has worked but i wouldn't really put your hopes of your long-term retirement assets into an old saying. what i would do is stick to a nice diversified portfolio g to your company's web siting you'll get there, take a risk tolerance test. try to ignore the ups and downs, stick to the game plan. >> jeff: but at this particular moment, be careful. >> always. >> jeff: jill, thank you very much. a rare and not all together pleasant sight off the coast of florida. you're looking at a goblin shark. you can see where it got its name it was caught accidentally by a shrimp fisherman. just the second time a goblin shark has been spot 234d this part of the world. the fisherman threw this one back, and it swam away. still ahead, turning lives around with lacrosse.

>> harlem lacrosse and leadership was started three years ago by a special education teacher who was searching for ways to reach hard to reach kids. >> i just threw up my hands and said i'm take my 11 worst boys out to the handball court besides school and teaching them lacrosse. >> why lacrosse? because unlike other sports it's a game that kids can excel at regardless of their size or strength. >> for kids who aren't great at basketball if they work really hard at lacrosse, from day one, they can become a star. on lacrosse there is a position for everybody. >> the program was so you can is zfls he expanded it to include mainstream students who also needed a jump-start. >> you seek out the troublemakers, the hard kids, why? >> those kids end up being our best, not only players but our best leaders on and off the field. >> keep it going. >> off the field they're also contributing to their community. here they're making sandwich
