severe storms streak across the middle of the country delivering tornadoes, damaging winds, and rain from texas to minnesota. the show goes on. wring ling brothers and barnum & bailey circus pulled its first show sunday when acrobats were injured in an accident. and the nfl draft kicks off in new york city, and it's a long way for heisman trophy winner johnny manziel. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, y 9t this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, may 9th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, recovery efforts are under way from the southwest to the great plains.

the latest batch of severe weather including tornados and flood-producing rains caused significant damage from texas to minnesota. the storm system is moving east today, but the possibility of more heavy rain, hail, and the chance of tornadoes exists from texas to indiana. yesterday the dallas area was hard hit. the rough weather blew through the dallas area yesterday afternoon. winds clocked at up to 70 miles per hour, toppled trees, crushed cars, and collapsed buildings. >> when we were inside, it felt like it was lifting us, you know. you felt like you were getting lifting like an elevator kind of feeling. >> at one point over 30,000 homes lost power. part of the dallas rapid transit system shut down. the wind tore through homes. one family said there was no time to run. >> it happened really fast. it was actually really scary. >> it was just overwhelming, man. everything happened all at once. >> there were also

flood-producing rains, up to 4 inches in the metro dallas area. five teenage boys who were playing near a drainage tunnel were swept down a fast-moving creek. >> back up for us. back up for us, please. back up. >> they clung to branches before being rescued. at least two tornados touched down in minnesota along with up to two inches of rain and hail. another twister landed in colorado. and 11 planes were hit by lightning at salt lake city international airport. now meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says even though the storm system has weakened, it is still threatening parts of the midwest with heavy rain and the possibility of tornadoes. >> well, quite a few severe weather reports yesterday. large hail, some tornados and damaged flooding around places like dallas. today it marches off toward the east, a little bit less energy. a lot of the main push of this storm heads sbup canada.

there will still be storms firing, especially in the mid-mississippi area and parts of the ohio valley. local threats for rainfall. a little bit more disorganized. around memphis and little rock, this is where we could see the severe weather popping up. some damaging wind gust, large hail, and an isolated risk of call tornados as we head through the day. a lot of warmth in the east. a lot of 70 gs and 80s on the map. the cold stuff is in the rockies and it will actually get colder as we head toward the weekend. mother's day on sunday, a little change in the pattern. a little cold air will be coming down the mountains. some mother's day skiing will possible. summertime warmth, though, from sunday into monday to kick off next week across much of the northeast. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. official and experts from the united states are arriving in nigeria to help find hundreds of kidnapped school girls.

they were abducted from a boarding school on april 15th by islamic terrorists and as correspondent and cbs news contributor debora patta reports from the capital, the nigerian families are desperate for any news. >> reporter: the classrooms are empty, looted. these charred remains of the school in chibok are a stark reminder of the kidnapped school girls missing now for 25 days. villages wait for any word from their daughters' kidnappers. anything is better than silence. al jazeera ya interviewed this mother who said she would give up her life to have her daughter freed. >> they can go into my house, burn my house, break everything in my house, give me my daughter back. that's better for me. >> reporter: militants herded more than 200 girls into trucks and drove off. the group has terrorized

villages like chibok for over a decade, and their attacks have become increasingly violent. twice the government has attempted to broker a peace deal, twice they have failed. this activist was part of the negotiations both times. he warns that any military operation to rescue the girls is risky. >> these people do not reason like normal human beings. any attempt to use force to free these girls will end up in a very tragic circumstance. >> reporter: he told us he thinks the girls may be held hostage in the dense forest northeast of chibok. he fears the group's growing extremism against nigeria's government. >> they have a mission to turn nigeria into an islamic state. >> reporter: he thinks the girls are still being held in one large group possibly to be used as a potential prisoner swap for boco haram militants who are

being held in nigerian jails but u.s. intelligence seems to think they've already been split up into smaller groups, possibly taken across the borders into neighboring villages. debora patta, chibok, nigeria. they plan to proceed with sunday's self-rule vote. despite calls to delay those votes from russian president vladimir putin. this morning he attended a victory day parade in moscow. victory day in russia commemorates the germans' surrender in world war ii. the government in kiev and the west consider the votes illegitimate. and we may learn today if the house committee will boycott a new committee. the republican controlled house voted to launch the probe yesterday. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. democrats are calling this a political and fund-raising

ploy on the part of republicans with this becoming the eighth investigation into benghazi by this panel, but republicans say they're just not satisfied with the explanations they've heard so far. >> and the resolution is adopted. >> the republican led house voted to begin a new fact-finding mission aimed at getting to the bottom of the benghazi attack that killed four americans on september 11th, 2012. the gop argues that the white house and state department have m misled the public and are holding back information. democrats called the move an election year political ploy that could involve months of hearing including testimony from former secretary of state and potential presidential candidate hillary clinton. >> this is not political. this is public policy at its most important level. >> democrats argued against the measure ahead of the vote. >> i urge all members to oppose

four people found dead in a burned florida mansion have been shot. a gun was found in the million dollar house they had been renting from former tennis star james blake. the bodies of business executive darrin campbell, his wife, and two teenaged children were discovered after the home was destroyed by flames wednesday. authorities say campbell bought a large amount of fireworks and gas cans days before the fire. and the show went on in hartford, connecticut, last night. on sunday, a team of circus acrobats fell during an aerial

stunt in providence, rhode island. four days later the ringling brothers and barnum & bailey brothers resumed their performances. alexis christoforous has the latest. >> reporter: the first performance of ringling brothers and barnum & bailey's circus was dedicated to the injured performers. >> they're recovering and they're in great spirits. they wanted to let you know and i quote they feel your prayers. >> reporter: eight acrobats were hurt in providence when a performance where they were held by their hair fell 20 feet to the ground. several were critically injured. >> we're working with authorities to find out what happened to make sure an accident like this never happens again very while the show went on thursday night, the hair hanging stunt did not. >> are there plans to bring back the hair hanging act? >> right now we're waiting for the performers to recover.

on the "cbs moneywatch" fed chair janet yellen talks bonds plus snapchat settles privacy charges. jill wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. fed chair janet yellen says the bond holding will drop very gradually. in her second day of congressional testimony, yellen says it could take eight years for the fed investment portfolio to return to 2008 levels. those investments now total $4.5 trillion. on wall street investors will be watching developments in eastern ukraine ahead of sunday's scheduled referendum on secession. the dow rose 32 points on thursday. the nasdaq lost 16 points. asian markets were mostly higher on news that china's inflation eased last month. tokyo's nikkei added a quarter percent.

hong kong's hang seng gained a fraction. cash is king in the u.s. real estate market. almost 43% of residential home purchases in the first quarter of the year were all cash deals, according to realtytrac. that's up from 38% from the previous quarter. that may be driven by more investors hoping to flip a property quickly for a profit. snapchat agrees to a settlement over charges it deceived its customers. the federal trade commission says that snapchat, the popular mobile messaging app, misled yierss about their disappearing messages and kept users' contacts without telling them or asking permission. snapchat agreed to settle without admitting or denying any wrongdoing. and apple is close to making its biggest acquisition ever. as early as next week apple will reportedly buy beats electronics. the company behind the popular

night by making jadeveon clowney the number one overall pick. the former south carolina defensive end was widely considered the top prospect in the draft, but the big story was where college football's marquee player would wind up. heisman trophy winner johnny manziel had to wait nearly three hours to hear his name called. >> with the 22nd pick of the 2014 nfl draft, the cleveland browns select johnny manziel. >> cleveland made three trades during the first round, the last of which netted them the former texas a&m quarterback. manziel said it didn't worry him that he wasn't one of the first players taken. >> i felt going into this that everything would work itself out, and i was a true believer in that, so obviously there were some spots i thought i might end up, but when it didn't happen, there was no list or bitterness or grudge or anything there about that. >> manziel becomes the fourth

chicago has a new attraction that opens tomorrow on the 94th floor of the john hancock building. the tilt allows visitors to step into booths with some very thick glass and then tips them over at a 30-degree angle. they get a pretty scary view a thousand feet below. it will cost you. $23 per person. some say they can't wait to try it. i think i'll wait though. here's another look at the top stories. cleanup is under way from texas to minnesota. more severe weather. there could be more rain and strong winds again today in the midwest.

and four days after the accident that injured aerial performer, the circus resumed its performances. the ringling brothers and barnum & bailey circle was show went on yesterday without the controversial aerial act. veterans affairs secretary eric shinseki has ordered a nationwide audit across the country that care for millions of veterans. that's after claims that 40 veterans died waiting for care at a clinic in phoenix. wyatt andrews reports. >> reporter: troy burmish is a veteran of iraq and a former v.a. hospital work never phoenix. he told a cbs affiliate thousands have waited for more than a year for care, but the hospital has used a secret list to hide those delays. >> and now because they want to look good for d.c. or their supervisors or whatever the case may be, now we've lost the lives of 40 veteran because somebody wanted to have a good report. >> reporter: and it's not just phoenix. whistle blowers and investigators at three other v.a. hospitals and clinics have also charged that officials kept off the books secret lists of

veterans who were made to wait longer than the goal of 14 day. secretary of veterans affairs eric shinseki told us that because of those claims, the national audit will study however v.a. clinic schedules its patients and handles delays. >> i have directed the undersecretary for health to do a systemwide survey of scheduling practices to make sure we understand what's going on here. >> reporter: does this suggest a pattern to you that the secret waitlist seems to have surfaced in four different places? >> that's a large health system, 1,700 points of care, and just about every one of them does scheduling, so we're going to take a good hard look here. >> reporter: the house committee on veterans affairs have subpoenaed all of shinseki's documents and e-mails related to the investigation. the question here is whether
