>> "think like a freak" offers to retrain your brain to tackle problems in a fresh way. stephen dubner and steven levitt join us. what is different in this book? >> the first two were us describing the world in our weird way, fun way, we like to think. then we thought, wouldn't it be nice to help people, whether it's families solving their problems or governments which god knows need as lot of help these days. we tried to put our thinking in rules and parables to live by. when i stay steven, how do you know who i'm talking to. levitt and dubner. >> okay, levitt, what do you mean by think like a child? >> we start to think about what made us different, a great childhood. we don't rule anything out.

we tend to think really small. we don't try to answer the big questions. we handle the smallest questions. we go for the obvious a lot of times. things other people don't think are reasonable. >> kids have no preconceptions or bias. >> you follow your curiosity. everybody has been in that meeting where the boss says we are brainstorming, there are no stupid ideas. you say what about this and oh, there are some stupid -- once you have been hit like that, you stop. we can all learn to think like that. >> look at things with a beginner's eye, with a fresh eye. >> absolutely. i do work with firms and the only good advice i give firms because i know nothing at all. i ask questions they think are ridiculous. oftentimes the best ideas are right in front of us. we can't see them because we are blinded by conventional wisdom. >> the hot dog champ you talk about. most think how do i eat more hot

dogs. he thinks what? >> kobe, an interesting guy that is a friend of ours and lives in new york now. instead of thinking how can i eat more hot dogs, which is what the traditional competitors think is how can i make one hot dog easier to eat and broke it down. because he had a different question, there's a different set of strategies so wildly good, the first year he not only broke the world record, but doubled it. world records don't get doubled. >> what was the strategy? >> it involves many parts. instead of eating with two hands, break it in half. separate the dog from the bun, it's easier to swallow the dog. dip the bun in warm water. even if we don't want to become competitive eaters, we can benefit from soaking our buns in warm water. a lot of breaking down the problem. even though this is the kind of silly example none of us want to

be competitive eating champions, i assume, charlie, i don't know, maybe that's the dream. whatever problem you are trying to solve, poverty, famine, income and equality. we look at the things that bother us most as opposed to asking a question and getting a new set of questions. >> let's turn to golf. >> that's your sweet spot. >> apply this to golf. >> you are a golfer. >> i'm getting worse. we are going to be about the same. we have been bringing amateurs on the course and doing experiments. we put them in trouble and have them play safely or more aggressively. we think golfers, an amateur golfer can cut four strokes off their game by thinking smarter. the problem is, a lot of golfers are not trying to get low scores, sit in the locker room and bar and talk about how they threaded the needle under the

water. be specific, how do you cut four strokes? >> i'll give you an example. golfers are much worse than they think. when they are close to a water hazard, aim 40 feet to the right. there's no amateur golfer in the world that aims there. that's why the water is filled with balls of people hitting balls in the water. if they hit it safe over to the other side of the green, they could save a lot of strokes. >> this is great, my ball always goes right. >> the other thing that is relatable is the upside of quitting. whether it's a job or relationship, so many of us are focused on we have to do it, we have to do it. >> we have all been coached and talked throughout our lives to never give up anything, right? vince lombardi was taught never

to give up. if you are the prime minister facing extinction, then yes, not giving up is a great idea. when you are in a job, relationship, project, there's a thing called the sunk cost fallacy. you put a lot into something and have to see it through. we argue there are a lot of cases where we would all do better by accepting failure as a fruitful end of something and moving on. both of us have quit a lot of stuff. we are bias. everybody is bias. we may be bias in favor of quitting. we have quit and ended up happy. a lot of people can benefit from that. >> not just quitting, failing quickly. the quicker you fail, the more you can move on to something worthwhi worthwhile. >> steven levitt, you encourage your kids to think and be excited about something. >> i don't mind if they are good at something.

every kid learns how to read and do math. when i looked at my college students, what they have trouble with is ideas and creativity. anything you can do to make a happy, creative kid gives them a leg up on the world. how to persuade people who don't want to be persuaded? >> rule number one, give up. the bias that most of us carry when it comes to the hot button issues of the day are so deep and smarter people are so good at finding more evidence to confirm what they believe as opposed to rounding it out. persuading people is hard. if you need to do it, we have a list of suggestions. don't pretend your argument is perfect. it's the problem. people on one side shouting at the other as though i'm 100% right. >> the only answer to that is let the other person know that you hear them and their argument is clear to you. >> right. there may be some in their argument, too. if you are trying to persuade someone, you are reaching the solution, not win the argument.

he's been called the parishioner of it. jookin is a free-style dance. it's influenced by your imagination. >> reporter: recently, buck, as he's known has been wowing audiences across the globe. he's performed with madonna at the super bowl, in gap ads, music videos. and as a member of cirque du soleil's biggest show, michael jackson. but his soaring career has humble roots. he learned to jook on the streets of memphis, where the dance was born. in just five years was entertaining crowds on the streets of l.a. to make ends meet. >> i don't want to be in a dance studio with a bunch of mirrors. we love the whole organic feel of the dance. i believe that's what made it what it was.

ballet classes to gain strength and form. it was there she issued him a jookin challenge. >> she said i want you to try something. do what you do, but try it to this music. she put in this cd. >> reporter: a few hours later, he imp ro vised this performance to "the swan". ♪ >> it just got an amazing reaction from the kids that were there. like the kids, all you hear is, wow! ooh! >> reporter: three years later, new york city ballet principal dancers were awe struck by his interpretation. they orchestrated an informal meeting with a legendary celloist. >> it came out there.
