a close call at one of the nation's busiest airports. two packed passenger jets come within a few hundred feet of a midair collision. an airliner is evacuated on the runway. 162 passengers spill out on to the tarmac when the smell of smoke fills the cabinet. >> the pilot yells, evacuate, evacuate. >> nearly 100 people are arrested in connection with the computer hacking ring that targeted nearly a half million users, including the former miss teen usa. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, may 20, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, we are learning about a near, midair collision at one of america's busiest

airports. we have the details. good morning. >> good morning. this happened last month at newark liberty international airport. it involved two planes, one landing and the other taking off on intersecting runways. a united jet was landing on the east/west runway. by the time the jet started down the run way, the other jet was a mile away. the united jet was told to abort its landing. they came within 200 feet laterally and 400 feet vertically. 155 passengers and six crew members on the united flight. the expressjet flight carried 47 passengers and three crew. >> this could have been a catastrophic and horrific event. it was the air traffic controller who finally

recognized that these two aircraft were converging upon each other. he gave the order to united airlines aircraft to abort its landing. at that point, the other aircraft recognized, it needed, even though he was in the air, he could not climb. he kept his nose level. >> the national transportation safety board and faa are investigating. this incident on april 24th happened within 24 hours of another near midair collision. there, a united airlines jet was forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision. >> thank you. the faa is investigating a report of smoke on a flight in arizona. allegiant air flight 142 was taxiing for take off when they reported a chemical smell. evacuate. we pulled the door, push open the door.

i actually almost jumped out of the plane before the slide was ejected. i didn't know what else to do. then, you know, all the exits were opened and everyone started evacuating. >> there were 162 passengers on board. they used the emergency slides to evacuate. allegiant air says six people suffered mi yor injuries. they believe the smell came from the jet's electrical system. now, to politics. today is the busiest day of the primary so far. congressional and statewide races in six states. a particular interest are three competitive senate races. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning. >> good morning. republicans are hoping to pick up six senate seats in this midterm. that would give them the majority in the senate along with the majority they already have in the house. three big contests could be an early clue as to how they will do. first and most notably in kentucky, mitch mcconnell is

expected to win against matt bevin. it depends on how well bevin does. if he picks up enough votes, that could show that mcconnell could be vulnerable. in oregon, we have monica wehby. she's facing jason conger a state representative. conger is pro-life. wehby opposes it. either one could be a tough fight. in georgia, seven republicans calling for a repeal of obamacare. they are hoping to challenge a familiar name in that state. she is sam nunn's daughter. she refused to say whether she would vote for the affordable care act. >> thank you. this morning in beijing, the chinese foreign ministry summoned the u.s. ambassador. the u.s. charged five chinese

military officials with hacking into u.s. companies. china denies the allegations saying the charges are damaged the trust between the chinese and u.s. militaries. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: the fbi issued wanted posters for five chinese military officers accused of hacking into u.s. companies to steal trade secrets. >> we are exposing the faces and names behind the keyboards in shanghai used to steal from american businesses. >> reporter: the indictment lays out evidence they targeted nuclear and solar companies hitting six big names including westinghouse and alcoa. they are accused of stealing information to give chinese competitors an edge. >> the range of trade secrets and other sensitive information stolen in this case is significant and demands an aggressive response. >> reporter: this is not the first time the u.s. accused china of sponsoring hackers. it is the first time the justice

department took legal action. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: james lewis is a cyber security expert who testified about the threat it poses to american security. >> last year, the justice department said 3,000 u.s. companies were notified they had been hacked, mostly by the chinese. 3,000 works out to be nine a day. this is the tip of the iceberg. >> reporter: china says it facts are fabricated and the charges hurt u.s./china relations. bp faces more payouts in the 2010 oil spill. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning. pled guilty to criminal wrong doing and will pay a $2.6 billion fine. switzerland's largest bank admitted they helped americans hide their wealth in offshore

accounts. it doesn't have to turn over the client names to the government. this is the largest penalty imposed in a criminal tax case. asian markets are higher. tokyo's nikkei gained .5%. snapping a four-day losing streak. hong kong's hang seng added a half percent. here on wall street, blue chips stocks didn't do much yesterday. investors turned to tech stocks. the dow up 20 points, nasdaq added 35. the federal appeals court ruling could cost bp billions. yesterday, the court said businesses didn't have to prove they were harmed by the 2010 oil spill in the gulf of mexico to collect settlement payments from bp. bp says they already paid out $12 billion in claims and are considering their legal options. chipotle is taking a stand against guns. over the weekend, a group of people brought assault weapons into one of their restaurants in dallas. the company says that created a potentially intimidating

it violates the league constitution. the next step will be a hearing where the nba board of governors will vote on sterling's future. sterling's attorney is asking for a three-month delay to answer the charge. on the court last night, it was game one of the western conference finals between san antonio and oklahoma city. the thunder looking like they missed their injured big man. tun dunn kahn -- the spurs win 122-105. the new york rangers grab a 2-0 series lead in the nhl finals after falling behind montreal early, the rangers scored three unanswered goals to win game two, 3-1. fans and handlers of california chrome are breathing earlier today. the new york state gaming commission will allow the horse to wear the nasal strips it has worn during a six-race winning streak. up to yesterday, the strips were prohibited in new york.

>> reporter: miss teen usa 2013 kassidy wolf was a victim of a hacker using the malicious software called black shades rat or remote access tools. authorities say last year, a hacker used wolf's personal computer web cam to take nude photos of her and threatened to use them online if she didn't send more photos. instead, she went to police. u.s. attorney was familiar with black shades, which infected over 500,000 computers. >> for $40, the black shades rat enabled anyone, anywhere in the world to instantly become a dangerous cyber criminal. >> reporter: here is how it worked. hackers bought the program. they then sent victims an infected e-mail. once the unknowing victim clicked the e-mail, the hackers were in. >> the black shades rat allowed users to remotely and secretly

gain access to everything on the victim's computer, including photographs, documents and passwords to online accounts. >> reporter: the remote access tool gave them access to the web camera and recorded their key strokes and allowed them to send cyber ransom notes. this one says your computer has been hijacked. your private files are impossible to access. it threatened victims to pay up or lose access to files permanently. kassidy wolf's hacker was arrested and sentenced to 18 months in prison. one is cooperating with authorities. authorities say they were using the software to steal from others. elaine quijano, cbs news, new york. a russian billionaire may shell out the biggest divorce settlement in history. a swiss court ruled for him to give his ex half of his fortune,
