>> it's a tie for the fourth time in the 80-year history of the national spelling bee. a pair of winners are crowned. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, may 30th, this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, may 30th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. after a month of controversy that included racist statements from a billionaire owner, threats of a player boycott and an unprecedented penalty by the nba, the los angeles clippers have been sold. shelly sterling, the wife of donald sterling confirmed last night she sold the team to former microsoft ceo steve ballmer for a record-setting price of $2 billion, the most ever for an nba team. in announcing the sale shelly sterling's legal team said she was acting under her authority as the soul trustee of the sterling family trust which owned the clippers. now as david bagnell reports, the sale must be approved by the nba.

>> reporter: it could be the biggest price tag in nba history. cbs news has confirmed former microsoft ceo steve ballmer has signed a deal to purchase the los angeles clippers for a record-break 2g billion. magic johnson tweeted steve ballmer owned the clippers is a big win for l.a. and the clippers. the agreement comes after sterling's estranged wife shelly rushed to sell it tuesday. donald sterling signed a document giving shelly the authority to negotiate a sale. sterling and three quarters of the league's owners will have to approve the deal before balmer can become the new owner. david bagnell for cbs news, los angeles. >> after the $2 billion deal with steve ballmer was

announced, shelly sterling said in a statement, quote, i am confident that steve will take the team to new levels of success while balmer said i will do everything in my power to ensure that the clippers continue to win big and win big in los angeles. now, to an alarming breakout of measles in the country, measle outbreaks have reached a 20-year here according to the senn fers fcenters for disease . dr. jon lapook said those who came down with the measles didn't get vaccinated. this doctor is with the cdc. >> most of the people who decided not to be vaccinated through certain beliefs and philosophical reasons and when measles are imported in the united states and finds an unimmunized person, that person will get'sles.

>> reporter: almost 90% of the cases got it in california, new york, and ohio. in the united states the vaccination rate against measles is over 90%, but pockets of unimmunized people remain. the 177 cases in ohio were primarily among unvaccinated amish communities. some of them traveled to the philippines where there's a large measles outbreak. >> the critical issue is that if you're traveling around the world and you haven't been vaccinated against measles, chances are you're going to get it and bring it back home. >> infants are especially vulnerable to measles because they don't get vaccinated until at least age 1. when travelers bring home the infection, infants are easy targets for the virus. dr. jon lapook, cbs news, new york. calls for veterans affairs secretary eric shinseki to be fired are growing this morning. shinseki is scheduled to outline his plan to fix the v.a. health care failures today. he's also due to deliver his report on the scandal to the white house.

tara mergener is in washington. good morning, tara. >> good morning, marlie. the secretary is fighting for his job this morning, but amid allegations of delayed care and misconduct support is waning. embattled veterans affairs secretary eric shinseki is expected to outline plans to fix the broken v.a. system today. but a growing list of lawmakers from both sides of the i'll say they've lost faith in him. >> he should send down because we need to spend our energies on getting the v.a. fixed. >> it's beyond clear that the v.a. has not performed up to anyone's standards under his stewardship. >> a preliminary report released by the inspector general confirmed delay and care for veterans throughout the v.a. system. shinseki met privately with veterans groups and lawmakers thursday.

25 years 25 years ago this month a hollywood legend was born in iowa. dean reynolds visits a farm that was the backdrop that was part of an american pastime. >> reporter: it's a quote made famous in the movie. a seven-word prophesy that came true here on this iowa farm. they built it and they still come. there may never have been a field of dreams without sue riddell.

back in 1987 as a volunteer for the iowa film office, she was told to go scout scenery for some movie. so you're tooling around the back roads of iowa and you come up to this hill and -- >> we got right to the end of the hill and looked and i went, oh, my goodness, it's perfect. >> reporter: all she need was the farmer's permission. >> i said are you crazy or what? you going make a movie. and then she said, yes, we want to build a ball field. >> reporter: the farm had been in don lansing's family since 1906. you used to play catch with your father. >> yes. me and my dad used to play ball right 200 feet from where this ball field was built. >> hey, dad, you want to have catch? >> reporter: kevin costner, james earl jones, and the rest of the cast spent all summer long on lansing's land.
