good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a pentagon investigation found incontra vertical evidence that former american p.o.w. bowe bergdahl walked away from his unit while serving in afghanistan, and this morning bergdahl is listed in stable condition at a military hospital in germany. the exchange of brgdahl for five high-level taliban officials has many questioning it. >> many of those critics are right here on capitol hill. the pentagon did not formally accuse bergdahl of deserting, but while many believe he does deserve a hero's welcome back home, others believe he deserves a court-martial. senate and committee members will meet behind closed doors with the department of defense today to try to understand why the obama administration let five taliban fighters go in exchange for army sergeant bow derg dal.

>> this not only breaks with our policy and press den but it does raise the possibility of high-level taliban figures who are now going to be free. >> reporter: the taliban fighters must remain in qatar for at least a year. some say their release could pose a risk for other troops abroad. >> this is the right thing to do because we in the united states do not leave our men and women in uniform behind. >> it was determined that bergdahl walked away from his unit. they have taken to the airwaves and social media saying he deserted and that other soldiers died searching for him. greg letterman served two tours in afghanistan. in an interview via skype he said he remembers when bergdahl left. >> he dropped all of his sensitive i tempts like his weapon, night vision, body armor, all of that stuff which he wouldn't do if he were captured. >> bergdahl is hospitalized in

germany in stable condition undergoing dream that will help reintegrate him into society. now, former secretary of state hillary clinton said she won't second-guess the swap but said deals like this are made all the time. >> thank you, susan. events in ukraine and relations with russia are expected to top his agenda. mr. obama's visit began this morning in warsaw, poland. while in poland, the president is scheduled to meet with ukraine's newly elected president petro poroshenko. from poland, mr. obama travels to belgium and france. on friday in normandy, the president will mark the 70th anniversary of d-day. and this morning a san francisco man suspected of possessing explosives is in custody. ryan kelly chamberlain ii was arrested late yesterday south of

the gold p gate bridge following a second day. he was considered armed and dangerous. during a weekend raid of chamberlain's apartment, officials found explosive materials and chamberlain worked for years as a social media consultant. before he disappeared, he posted a manifesto about his depression. this morning two 12-year-old wisconsin girls are under arrest charged with stabbing another student nearly to death. the victim was stabbed 19 times. the suspects are charged as adults and prosecutors say the girls planned the murder to please a mythological creature they learned about online. omar villafranca has details. >> reporter: two 12-year-old girls are being held on a half a million dollars each after authorities say they tried to kill a friend. the girls are charged with first-degree attempted homicide. >> this is a very disturbing investigation. >> reporter: police say the suspects invited the victim to a sleepover friday night. saturday morning the two lured her to the park to play a game.

one held the victim down while the other suspect stabbed her 19 times in the arms, legs, and torso. >> reporter: the suspects then left the scene. the victim was able to crawl to a nearby road and get help. she's being treated in a local hospital. the suspects were arrested a few hours later. police say they've recovered a knife believed to have been used in an attack which they say the girls had been planning for months. >> both girls had a fascination with a fictitious character that is posted to a website that is often about fictitious stories about death and horror. >> reporter: the criminal complaint refers to that character as slender man. the girls told police it was their hope the victim would die and they would see slender man. >> parents should not allow their children to have unrestricted internet or monitor usage, whether it be on their

computer, smartsmartphone, play station. >> reporter: police say one of the suspects didn't feel any remore for the attack. they're due back in court next week and face up to 60 years in prison if convicted. omar villafranca, cbs news. now to the weather. potentially dangerous storms are possible in the central plains. severe storms producing large hail and possibly strong tornado mace erupt in nebraska, south dakota, and kansas. north of denver, colorado, voluntary evacuation orders have been issued due to severe flooding. two rivers reached flood stage from heavy snow melt and recent rains. roads were closed and buildings flooded. the water is expected to begin to recede later today. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, seattle moves to raise the minimum wage, and a crackdown on offshore tax evasion. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. seattle is about to have the highest minimal wage in the nation. the city council unanimously

signed a bill yesterday to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. that bill will take place in 2015 and it will be phased in over the next several years. a group of franchise owners say they will sue to stop the ordinance. asian markets got a boost after a manufacturing report from china that that showed a slowdown with easing. tokyo's nikkei rose half a percent. hong kong's hang seng gained a half a percent. here on wall street a research firm messed up. a couple of hours later it corrected its mistake and then stocks took off. the dow rose 26 points, closing at another record high. the nasdaq slipped 5, and the s&p went up one point for another record close. the irs is on the hunt for americans hiding money overseas. the agency just cut a deal with 77,000 foreign banks and other financial institutions. they've all agreed to share information about americans with

assets in their countries, but the names and accounts won't be handed over until next year. panera will announce a big food policy change today to try and boost business. the national chain says it will rid of all artificial ingredients in its food by 2016. the company also says it will buy from north american suppliers whenever possible, but it isn't swearing off genetically modified foods. and meet canada's luckiest couple. they couldn't be happier now holding a lottery check for $50 million, but it almost didn't happen. in january they lost the winning ticket. then on april fools' day, a miracle. a member of their church found it, and they had signed and written their address on the ticket. anne-marie? >> hopefully they'll be making a big donation to that church. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thanks a lot, jill. coming up on the "morning news," computer upgrade. apple announces a new operating system that could turn your

some of apple's new updates. >> reporter: apple unveiled its latest at the ios event. some of the new items. ios 8 will make it easier to share apps. health kit allows people to track their diet and sleep habits. apple said it's working with nike and the mayo health clinic to keep tabs on patients' health. they're careful to keep track of your privacy. the new plan home kit will give clients control of their appliance, locks, and lighting from their phone or ipad. >> for something like a home or power grid, that can be very serious if somebody can unlock your doors with their phone. >> reporter: apple is also making siri, the personal as assista assistant, a whole lot smarter. right now you have to hit the home button to activate her.

some gender confusion about hurricanes. according to a new study, people are more afraid of hurricanes with male names, but storms with feminine names like katrina or sandy do more damage, not because they're stronger, but because people think the female-named storms are less threatening, so they're not prepared when they hit. and a fight broke out in a florida courtroom between a judge and a public defender. the two got into a heated argument over whether the lawyer's client could have a speedy trial. eric sandoval of our orlando affiliate wkmg has the blow by blow. >> what do you want to be? i'm not waiting. if you want to set it for trial, set it for trial. >> that's public defender andrew weinstock at the podium trying to set up an appointment for his client.

but he seemed to anger the judge. >> if i had a rock, i'd throw it at you. the judge didn't stop there. he ordered wein stock to sit down. the judge apparently had had enough. >> if you want to have a fight, let's -- >> reporter: and that's what weinstock does. he follows the judge into the chambers and everyone heard what happened next. >> they went back and started fighting like crazy. >> reporter: amanda was waiting to be a witness in one of the cases in court today. she said she couldn't elieve what was happening, and she thought everything started with the public defender's attitude. >> the lawyer was rude. he was extremely rude. he shouldn't have did that. >> reporter: when the judge finally came back into the courtroom, he was alone, caught his breath, and finished up the case. >> i thought it was crazy, but you know what? you aren't going to disrespect the judge in his own courtroom.

nasa may have found a way to nasa may have found a way to land a large spacecraft on mars. this flying saucer is on the hawaiian island of kuaui and it's equipped with a giant innertube and supersonic parachute. nasa plans to launch it into space in the next few days to test those devices to see if they can slow the craft enough to make a safe landing. and there's a new weapon to in the fight against cervical cancer. it enlists the patient's own body to attack cancer cells. dr. jon lapook has the details. >> reporter: at 35, erica wallace learned she had advance cervical cancer that spread to her lymph nodes. >> it kind of became all right, just deal with it, tell me what i need do because i'm a mom and i need to be here for my boys.

>> reporter: intensive chemotherapy did not work. erica was told she had about a year to live. >> i had to discuss what if i'm not here, you know, what's going to happen with the boys because i could feel i was getting weaker and so i was pretty rock bottom at that moment. >> reporter: just two months later she became patient number two in a small trial using the body's immune system to seek out and destroy cancer. dr. christian hen ricks at the nhs medical scepter leads the trial. >> the treatment that we do, we completely rearrange the immune system. >> reporter: doctors take a piece of the tumor and extract white blood cells or t cells. they're immune cells sent by the body to target the cancer. the t cells most potent are selected and grown in lab. billions of these cells are then infused into the patient's bloodstream. >> what i did was to give a single treatment and have the cells wipe out the tumor the
