this is the "cbs evening news." suspect good evening, everyone i am jeff glor where with the western edition of the broadcast. >> a deadly chain of events in las vegas this morning when it was over at least five people were dead, including two police officers. the violence began at a pizza restaurant and ended in a nearby wal-mart. we begin tonight with scott daniels of our affiliate klis. >> it was 11:30 local time when a man and a woman entered cici's restaurant and opened fire. he was wearing a bullet proof vest and had a hire powered rifle. >> he said this is a revolution. >> he shot two police officers, with the head. >> our preliminary investigation shows both officers were shot, however, one officer was able to fire back. >> they then grabbed the down officer's weapon and ran across

to the wal-mart, shooting someone near the front door. >> i saw the guns in the hands. >> he told me i it was a revolution and just killed two police officers. >> within minutes squat members quickly surrounded the stores after a report of shot fires inside. >> the male suspect shot the male suspect and took her own life. >> scott daniels, cbs news, las vegas. >vegas. >> today issues were issued across northern colorado. >> tw 22 tornadoes near denver. >> a funnel cloud. >> 84 miles southeast in callahan, heavy hail coated the ground. flash flood watches were issued in the southern plains were some areas reported midday totals of over three and a half inches of rain. thunderstorms are expected to move east this week and bring more heavy rain. in pakistan tonight, a fierce battle is taking place at the airport in karachi. it's been attacked by militants.

cbs's farhan bokhari is following this he is in islamabad. what are you seeing and watching inside pakistan this morning? e is in islamabad. what are you seeing and watching inside pakistan this morning? >> reporter: so far at least five people have been killed. this was a well organized attacks. this includes five or six airport employees and at least two terrorists. this seems like a very well organized attack. there are some indications that the militants came in dressed as airport guards and managed to get inside the airport premises. they seem to be very well armed. >> glor: farhan bokhari inside pakistan tonight, thank you so much. we are learning more about bowe bergdahl. he is talking to doctors about his treatment in captivity. but he is not speaking to his family. jeff pegaues is in washington has more. >> reporter: sergeant bergdahl is still in a u.s. hospital in germany where he is being

carefully monitored and prepared for his return to the u.s. after five years in the custody of the taliban. bergdahl, who is now telling the details it of his captivity to military officials says he spent at least some of that time in solitary confinement. a form of punishment after two failed attempts to escape. but the content of bergdahl's debriefings are not being shared with top ranking congressional officials. according to dianne feinstein chairman of the senate intelligence committee. >> i think this whole, sort of, deal has been one that its-- the administration has kept very close and in the eyes of many of us, too close. >> reporter: her republican counterpart saxby chambliss says he's also been kept out of the loop and that bergdahl's account of his captivity will ultimately be difficult to corroborate. >> that's not to say they're not absolutely true. but we weren't there. we have nobody who was on the inside. so we don't know exactly what happened in his life over the last several years. >> reporter: next week the house and senate are holding hearings about bergdahl's time in taliban

custody and the circumstances surrounding his release. republicans and democrats have raised national security questions about the prisoner swap and the white house decision not to inform congress in the advance. >> what i know today is what the president of the united states knows: that it would have been offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an american behind. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry dismissed criticism that the five prisoners will now be an asset to the taliban. >> i'm not telling you that they don't have some ability at some point to go back and get involved, but they also have an ability to get killed doing that. >> reporter: the defense department says it's focus is on giving bergdahl the care he needs. a week after his release, he has still declined to speak with his family. jeff, his parents have received multiple e-mail threats in the last several days. the f.b.i. says it is investigating. >> glor: thank you, jeff. investigators are focusing on the truck driver accused in the crash that killed one man and

critically injured comedian tracy morgan. and there is new word on morgan's condition tonight. here's anne-marie green. >> reporter: the accident left tracy with several broken bones including his nose, leg and ribs but doctors say after undergoing surgery he's more responsive. the driver of the tracker trailer, 35-year-old kevin roper has been released on $50,000 bail. he's being charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. police say roper failed to observe slowing traffic and swerved too late to avoid hitting morgan's mercedes limo bus prompting the crash involving a second tractor- trailer and three other vehicles. the driver of morgan's limo tyrone gale wrote this on his facebook page. "i can only say feeling helpless on the highway was very hard to take. there was nothing i could do but scream at times." joan claybrook is the former head of the national traffic and safety administration. she says driver fatigue is a leading cause in many large truck accidents.

>> they can work up to 80 hours a week, truck drivers can. this is unsafe on the american highways for all of us. and most of the people who are harmed in these crashes are people in cars. >> reporter: data from a u.s. department of transportation studies showed there were 317,000 police reported motor vehicle accidents involving large trucks in 2012, nearly 4,000 of those accidents resulted in fatalities. traveling with morgan were his friends and fellow comedian james mcnair, ardie fuqua, as well as his assistant, jeffery malia. mcnair was killed, the others remain in critical condition. the new jersey state police and the national transportation safety board are continuing to investigate. roper is expected to make a court appearance monday. >> glor: anne-marie green thank you. the day after the belmont stakes the harsh words from the co- owner of california chrome continue. here's don dahler. >> it's going to be very close. tonalist got there! >> reporter: tonalist was the

this race that ran in the first two. none of the other horses did. >> so you-- you figure it out. and i mean you ask yourself would, it be fair if i played basketball with a child in a wheelchair. >> i think you need to lose as gracefully as you win. >> reporter: daily racing forum's jay privman has been covering horse racing for 30 years. >> that is part of the challenge of this. it shouldn't be easy and it is why only 11 horses have won it. >> reporter: the kentucky derby, preakness and belmont stakes are run in five weeks. traditionalists say the grueling schedule is exactly what makes the triple crown such a rare achievement. two of the past three winners, secretariat and affirmed ran against horses who had not run all three races. don dahler, cbs news, new york. >> glor: three months after the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370 families today launched an effort to establish a $5 million reward fund. in a statement that notes the families anger at search authorities, the group says it's using social media to raise a hoped for $5 million to pay a private company or individual to find the plane.

egypt's new president abdel fatah el-sisi was sworn in today. the former field marshal who lead a military coup last year promised a renaissance for the egyptian economy. he also pledged a tough fight against islamic militants. pope francis hosted a prayer session at the vatican today following an invitation to the president of israel and palestinian authority. here's allen pizzey with more on that. >> i'm glad to see you. >> i'm glad to see you, too. >> reporter: the unprecedented encounter was billed as a time out in political negotiations. but leaders from three different faiths praying together in the vatican was a political and diplomatic event cloaked with religion. >> jewish rabbis, christian cardinals and muslim imams intoned passages from the old testament, the new testament and the koran. peace making pope francis said calls for much more than warfare

it calls for the courage to say yes to encounter and no to conflict. in a way he was preaching to the choir. israeli president shimon peres and his palestinian counterpart mahmoud abbas hammered out the first real israeli-palestinian peace accord as negotiators 20 years ago. >> with the blessing, shalom. >> reporter: peres calls himself an old man who had seen war and tasted peace. and said leaders owed their children a better future. abbas prayed to god to bring comprehensive and just peace to our country an region. waiting for that has left people tired and disillusioned, israeli foreign policy advisor nadav >> we have to do somethign with >> we have to do something about the lack of trust and cynicism. we believe that when the three leaders will send this message it can have an affect on public opinion.

>> glor: the red carpet outside the tony awards tonight. the awards are set to take place right here in new york city and you can see the tony awards on television right here on cbs this evening. the tonys cap another successful season on broadway but not a cheap one. ticket prices have gone up 21% since the end of the recession. jill schlesinger is here with more tonight on this. jill, the average ticket price is now almost $104. why is that? >> reporter: well, we've got a big demand from tourists. they actually account for 66% of broadway ticket sales. so lots of demand there. when you look at the producer side to put a production in place it's really labor intensive. you can't just get a robot to do the job of an actor and also a seat on broadway is actually perishable, meaning that once it's sold and it's filled, you can't do anything else with it. no more revenue to be made. as a result, for a family of four it can cost $1,000, sometimes more for an evening of theatre.

>> glor: so broadway doing well now in part because they are making so much money. were they in rough shape before the recession? >> reporter: not exactly rough but something changed. back in 2001 producers got around a concept called dynamic pricing. it's kind of how airlines work and it goes on supply and demand so if there is real demand for a ticket the price can surge. and as a result, we have seen a big change in broadway gross receipts. almost doubling in the last dozen years. >> glor: and whether it's movies, music or theatre the award shows help big time. >> reporter: absolutely. when you think about this award, just being nominated can really help. we saw ticket sales and prices of those tickets for some of the shows nominated this year did incredibly well just after the nominations if you win, the price tag can go even further. >> glor: jill, thank you very much. >> reporter: great to be with you. >> glor: up next here a record- breaking turnout for country star george strait. did you know, your eyes can lose vital nutrients as you age?

g.p.s. they're called bathe bikes. officer matt freedman. >> tracking starts automatically and it's uploaded to a web site where i can literally track the course of the bike. >> reporter: police have also used undercover surveillance video to watch over the bathe bikes, and it doesn't take long before cameras capture a theft and police capture the thief. when you roll up to somebody who has taken one of these bikes whack is the reaction? >> utter shock. >> reporter: the mug shots then get posted on social media. >> it's my belief that people should know who's stealing their bikes. >> reporter: st. claire created this sticker to confuse thieves into thinking they could be stealing a bait bike. they're now 5,000 of them on bicycles around the city. >> it tells them this could possibly have a g.p.s. chip in it so if you take the bike you will be followed by a police officer. >> reporter: officer freedman says it's still too early to determine just how much the program has helped lower bike thefts in the city. you can't tell that there is anything that would differentiate these from any other bike.
