the san antonio spurs light up the scoreboard against the heat in game three of the nba finals. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, june 11th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning politicians on both sides of the aisle are wondering what's next. in what can only be described as a shocking primary upset, influential house majority leader eric cantor lost to a little funded little known tea party-backed economics professor. david brat's victory may well be the biggest upset in the modern primary history. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. there is always a surprise around the corner in washington politics but rarely one of this magnitude.

eric cantor, a seven-term incumbent, loses his seat. this could be the end of his political career. the victory was a shock to all, including the winner. surrounded by supporters, political newcomer dave brat summed up his stunning victory against majority house leader eric cantor in a way others also see it. >> this is a miracle from god. >> the tea party candidate and economic professor pulled off an unexpected upset last night, dethroning the number two republican in the house, ending cantor's hopes for an eighth term. >> obviously we came up short. >> reporter: the defeat was a shock to cantor supporters. he outspent brat 40-1. his own internal poll conducted late latest month had hit up 30 points over brat. brat centered much of his pcampaign around one issue, immigration. he and his tea party supporters accuse cantor of not being conservative enough, claiming he supported amnesty for immigrants living in the country illegally. cantor denied the charge and promised to continue fighting

for conservative values. >> i believe there's opportunity around the next corner for all of us. >> cantor was considered the top candidate to succeed house speaker john boehner. in a statement speaker boehner called cantor a good friend and a great leader and someone i've come to rely upon on a daily basis as we make tough choices when it comes to governing. it's the first time in governing history that a house majority leader has lost a primary. now, it is still unclear if cantor will keep his post until the end of the year and who replaces him in the new congress if the republicans keep their majority. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, as we reported it appears to have been a critical issue in eric cantor's defeat. a senate panel voted to give the obama administration an extra $2 billion to handle a surge of uncompanied children caught trying to cross the mexican

border by themselves. as vicente arenas reports, they're being held in a warehouse in arizona. >> reporter: the department of homeland security has denied our request to go inside the facility at the site of nogales because of the age of the children. some of the immigrants are only as old as 12 years old. the only glimpse inside are these photos obtained by a local radio station. more than 700 sleep in these large rooms. you can see the foil blankets covering the children. most traveled alone from el salvador, guatemala, and honduras. a salvadorean diplomat has been inside. >> it's not appropriate. >> it's not appropriate. >> translator: i was worried because they didn't have a good place to sleep, no privacy or proper bathrooms. >> reporter: the influx of children is being blamed on poverty and drug-related violence in central america. it's also believed that parents

think there have been changes wrongly made by president obama prohibiting young illegal immigrants being deported. what's the first thing that went through your mind when you heard all those kids were coming over here without their parents? >> i'm a mom, so i can't imagine a kid without a mom. >> paula was among the residents in this border town donating supplies. the kids here will be eventually be sent to centers in california and oklahoma. the government must now find the parents and guardians of all the children as they move through the deportation process. it's a complicated process that could last for months. vicente arenas, cbs news, nogales, arizona. well, this morning the pentagon is investigating one of the deadliest friendly-fire incidents of the afghan war. five americans were killed by a u.s. air strike. we've learned the names of four of the five americans killed in southern afghanistan monday. it's unclear if they were victims of human or mechanical error. they were part of a special operations unit ambushed by the taliban.

the u.s. troops were on patrol monday night with afghan forces when a nier fire fight broke out with taliban fighters. the u.s. called in an air strike and tried to escape by helicopter but a bomb dropped by an aircraft thought to be a b-1 bomber killed all five americans and at least one afghan soldier. president obama says gun violence has become the norm in this country and it's time for some soul-searching. he was talking about the inability of congress to tighten gun control measures. his comments came after a deadly shooting on the campus of an oregon high school. hundreds of students and faculty came together last night just a few blocks from reynolds high school near portland. they paid tribute to a 14-year-old student killed by a gunman. he also wounded a teacher before apparently killing himself. danielle nottingham reports. >> got a call, reynolds high school. shots fired in a locker room. at least one person down.

medical's responding. code 3. >> reporter: the shots fired inside reynolds high school sent students scattering just after 8:00 in the morning. the school was locked down. >> we just heard two gunshots. everyone was freaking out, and we all ran into the weight room hallway and we just hid and locked all the doors. >> reporter: a lone gunman with a rifle fatally shot a student inside the locker room and injured a teacher before killing himself in a school bathroom. >> we have identified the victim in today's shooting as 14-year-old emilio hoffman, a freshman at reynolds high school. >> you've just got to realize it can happen at your school and that's what happened today, and it's just so sad that we lost someone that's such great guy as emilio. >> reporter: authorities have tentatively identified the gunman but are not releasing his name, age, or the kind of rifle

the debate over the name has flared up in recent months. 50 senators have sign add letter called on the redskins to change their name. redskins owner daniel snyder said he'll never change the team's name. and a battle cry over a this morning from a teachers union across the country over a landmark decision to strike down tenure in california. a judge ruled yesterday that job protection laws at california public schools harm students especially poor and minority ones because it makes it almost impossible to fire bad teachers. the california teachers association will appeal. and on the "cbs moneywatch" now, google buys a satellite startup, and the airlines with the best on-time record. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. asian markets ended mixed ahead of the bank of japan's two-day policy meeting. tokyo's nikkei added half a percent. hong kong's hang seng lost a quarter percent. the government said wholesalers added to their stockpile but that didn't impress investors on wall street.

the dow gained only two points yesterday but still set a new record high. the nasdaq added just 1 point. the s&p lost half a point. google is heading into the sky. the internet giant is buying a company called skybox imaging for $500 million. its satellites takes high-resolution pictures and videos of earth. google says skybox will help them keep their maps up to date and eventually improve internet access to remote parts of the world. dunkin' donuts is heading west into california. the east coast chain plans to start construction on its first free-standing stores in the state next month. right now the stores are only in four cities, but c & d plans to open more than a thousand in the future. and, anne-marie, the airlines are getting better at arriving online. the government says the

violated his rights to free speech and privacy. in it he says the nba is a band of hypocrites and bullies and we have to fight these despicable monsters. this week sterling withdrew his support for the sale of the clippers to former microsoft ceo steve ballmer. today sterling's wife shelly will be in court to try to expedite the sale. commissioner adam silver says the nba is taking a back seat in the controversy. >> donald's attorney actually sent us a letter saying he was agreeing to allow her to negotiate a sale of the franchise, but because we knew donald was suing us, we asked shelly to indemnify us. we asked her if he disputed it, if she'd cover us. and she did. this is really now a dispute between the sterlings. >> donald sterling's attorney says today's court hearing will be to determine whether the 80-year-old is mentally competent.

sterling was banned for life by the nba and urged to sell the team when he was recorded making racist comments. now, the sterling controversy playing out during game three of the nba finals. with the series tied at one game apiece, san antonio shows up in miami and shoots the lights out. the spurs set a finals record by sinking nearly 76% of their shots in the first half. leonard finishes with a career-high 29 points and san antonio takes game three, 111-92. they now lead the series, two games to one. lebron james finished with 22 points last night, and shortly before the game, we got a look at what his post-basketball career might entail. the cable network starz released a teaser trailer for a new sitcom. exec produced by james.
