of kirkuk. the retreat comes as the obama administration is moving closer to sending aid to battle al qaeda-inspired militants across iraq. in a statement the white house acknowledged the ongoing violence and quote, will continue to provide and as required increase assistance to the government of iraq. wednesday the insurgents took over saddam hussein's hometown of tikrit, seizing the post. they seized iraq's second biggest city and took over the turkish consul land and took dozens of diplomats, police, and children as hostage. a u.s. official says iraq wants the u.s. to consider air strikes including the use of drones to help the country fight the insurgents. the white house has signaling it is not considering that option. >> we're focused right now on how we can assist the government at this point in time during what is a very challenging

security situation on the ground. >> the u.n. estimates hundreds of thousands i iraqis in mosul have fled their homes amid the attacks. at this point it does not look like baghdad is in any imminent danger. government and shiite forces would give the militants a much stronger fight, anne-marie, if they tried to take the capitol. >> all right. susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. cbs news correspondent holly williams is in iraq this morning. she joins us on the phone from er erbil. what is the situation on the ground now? >> good morning, anne-marie. they're celebrating stunning victories in northern iraq. here in erbil, hundreds have fled and have come to the region where i am which is relatively free from violence. now, we were talking to some those refugees this morning.

one was a soldier in the iraqi army who tried to defend mosul against the militants and he told us that his commanding officers had just dropped their weapons and ran away. and that matches up with other reports we've heard. the iraqi government has not put up much of a fight against the extrem hardly anyone else we spoke to had anything bad to say at all against the islamist militants. they say no civilians had been harmed by the extremists and they were fleeing because they fearle retribution. they feared shelling by iraqi government forces. now these militants want to establish a state based on is lachlic law and they now control a suede of territory extending from syria into iraq and their fighters are moving swiftly across the border.
4:05 am
