late goal to finish off an upset of ghana. >> incredible. he couldn't even believe that. >> this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, june 17th, >> this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, june 17th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, recovery efforts are under way in northeast nebraska. a powerful storm unleashed several tornadoes that killed at least one person and injured others. one small farming community sustained major damage following a direct hit. the severe weather is not letting up. thunderstorm watches are posted in parts of nebraska, iowa and illinois through the morning. >> where twin tornadoes touched down within a mile of each other yesterday afternoon, the victim that died was 5 years old. nebraska's governor declared a state of emergency. the small town of pilger, about

100 miles northwest of omaha was hardest hit. one tornado swept right through the middle of town. pilger has been evacuated kelly bartnick of our omaha tvkntv is in pilger. >> reporter: when you have nothing left, finding anything will do. >> yeah, i seen it. it come down over here. >> reporter: tommy and his family are sifting through what's left. this is his son's pilger home. his outside of town is gone, too. >> i mean, we lost everything. i lost all my vehicles. i don't have a vehicle. >> reporter: so much destruction, so much pain here from at least two twisters that tore through stanton county. at least half the town of pilger, nebraska, is now gone. likely more. homes of 300 nebraskaens all but wiped off the rural landscape. >> i've never been through this before. this was an experience. and i don't want to go through

it a >> reporter: behind marilyn anderson's tears there is happiness for riding out the storm in the basement corner. all of them will be grateful for. three square feet anderson will be grateful for. >> i did a lot of a flag that little corner. yeah. >> reporter: her home above her intact. the neighbor who rode out the storm with her not so lucky. his is gone. all of pilger is without power. along with pilger being evacuated, too. >> that was kntv's kelly bartnick reporting. now, several of the injured are hospitalized with critical injuries. this morning, folks in bakersfield, california, are beginning to return to their homes. evacuation orders were lifted when a wildfire that affected the homes 50% were stained. miles from where the sequoia national forest was destroyed.

and a fire burned 17 square miles and continues to burn out of control this morning. hundreds of people living in navajo communities were forced to evacuate. the fast movinging fire is being driven by strong winds. president obama is expected to make a decision supporting military action any day. the u.s. has talked with iran about possible cooperation to stop the militants known as the islamic state of iraq and syria. this is the area that militants hold. an area around northern syria and iraq and closing the area around baghdad. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. as the white house considers its next move in iraq, it is sending hundreds of u.s. troops there. they are combat ready. but the president insists they are going there simply to protect american personnel and the embassy in baghdad. and not to engage in direct fighting. >> reporter: president obama is

in discussions with his national security team about possible military action to stop the advance of militants from the islamic state of iraq and syria. isis has already overrun cities and towns in northern iraq and the group promises it will attack baghdad. secretary of state john kerry said the president is exploring all options including air strikes. >> it's not the whole answer, but it may well be one of the options that are important. >> reporter: the president told congress that 225 military personnel could be used to protect the embassy in baghdad. a senior official said the white house is considering sending special forces team to advise iraqi forces. and in a rare and controversial move u.s. and iranian officials met on the sidelines to explain control of situation. on an interview on monday, secretary kerry was asked if that would include military

cooperation between these longtime adversaries. >> but i wouldn't rule out anything that would be constructive to providing real stability. >> reporter: iraqi citizens are rallying to defend the country against the militants who have driven 500,000 iraqis from their homes. >> now, the president has said that the use of u.s. ground troops, u.s. air support, any u.s. assistance is contingent upon iraq's government at least trying to overcome its own sectarian divisions. anne-marie. >> thank you, susan. the pentagon launched an official investigation into sergeant bowe bergdahl disappearance in afghanistan. bergdahl vanished from his post in june 2009. he was held by the taliban for five years before being exchanged for five taliban fighters last month. members of his unit say bergdahl was a deserter. he's being treated at a military hospital in texas. and tomorrow general motors' ceo mary barra testifies before

a congressional committee and she'll likely be asked about gm's latest recall. over 3 million cars announced yesterday. gm has issued 44 recalls this year involving 20 million vehicles worldwide. bigad shaban has the details. on the latest. >> reporter: the latest general motors recall is the company's largest of the year. gm has to change the keys for 3.1 million cars in the u.s. the company says the keys could bump the ignition switch in cars, inadvertently shutting them off. and disabling the vehicle's power steering and air bags. related ignition switch problems forced gm to recall 3.26 million cars since february. 13 deaths and more than 50 crashes have been linked to the earlier recalls. the newest recall affects keys for the buick lacrosse. chevy impala, cadillac deville cadillac dts, buick la certain, buick regal and monte carlo. gm says changing the key design will prevent problems without

needing to make actually repairs to the cars. but already to blame for eight accidents and six injuries. the slot in gm's old keys will be replaced with a hole to retribute the weight. gm says it hopes to begin replacing drivers' car keys in the next few years. bigad shaban, cbs news, burbank, california. newly released photos of an emotional meeting between two grieving fathers in california. peter roger on the left, his son ellot killed six people in santa barbara before killing himself. and the other is richard martinez. his son was one of the victims. the two fathers came face-to-face and even hugged. martinez said they agreed to prevent gun violence. and coming up on the "morning news," a list of the most stolen suvs. plus, tracy morgan. on the mend. an update on his condition after a serious crash. this is the "cbs morning news."

using only your voice. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. good morning, anne-marie. asian stocks finished lower. tokyo's nikkei gained 0.25% and hng hang seng lost .50%. due to the crisis in iraq. the dow added five points the nasdaq gained ten points. a victory for macy's, the retailer came out on top in its battle with jcpenney and martha stewart. a judge ruled yesterday that penney's is with the exclusive contract between macy's and martha stewart living. macy's won't get any punitive damages. the judge also ruled macy's failed to prove penney's actions were malicious or immoral. car thieves love ford, according to a new list of stolen suvs, the auto giant takes the top three spots. number one is the escape.

>> reporter: the facebook rants anthony elonis posted about his ex-wife included i'm not going to rest until your body is a mess. soaked in blood and dieing from all the little cuts." and another said "enough elementary schools in a ten-mile radius to initiate the most heinous school shooting you could ever imagine." a pennsylvania jury found elonis guilty of making threats and sentenced him to more than four years in prison. he argued that he was simply exercising his right to free speech and had no intention of actually harming anyone. >> what the point are you accountable for what you say online? >> reporter: an attorney with the electronic tier foundation which defends the first amendment online. >> we would be able to stop all sorts of crime if we just arrested people based on what they thought or said without waiting for them to carry it out. >> is the line actually acting on the threats? >> i would say the line is taking a step towards acting out
