2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. secretary of state john kerry arrived in iraq this morning. he'll meet with iraq's prime minister nuri al maliki and urge maliki to give more power to his political opponents. kerry calls the sunni advance through iraq a critical moment in the middle east. on sunday they took control of two more border crossings into syria and jordan, a key u.s. ally. president obama told "cbs this morning" anchor norah o'donnell it could pose a threat to the entire region. >> the problem with isis is the fact that they are destabilizing the country that could spill ore into some of our allies like jordan and that they are engaged in wars in syria where in that

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a texas doctor and his daughter decided to take the law into their own hands and chase down some alleged burglars they thought had just robbed their home. as tim whitesell from our houston affiliate khou shows us, they filmed the entire thing very with the cell phone camera rolling they drove off the suspects. >> stop, elena. here in new york city the curtain went up last week on a new broadway musical. it's inspired by the lyrics of famed rapper tupac shakur. the question is will traditional broadway audiences buy it? vinita nair reports. ♪ >> reporter: the story line may sound familiar. ♪ >> reporter: but the music is not your typical broadway fair. there are 21 songs featured in "holler if ya hear me" written by one of the most successful and controversial rappers in america. >> it's a story told through the music of tupac shakur. >> reporter: tony award winner tony leon said he spent nearly a decade crafting a way to keep tupac's music alive. >> if you look at his music

written on paper, it's like, wow, look at the phrasing of those words, look at the poetry. this is shakespearean. ♪ >> reporter: shakur's music reflects his own turbulent life, sometimes glorifying violence, sometimes pleading for it to end. ♪ >> reporter: 17 years old, he he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting. ♪ >> reporter: the musical tackles topics like drugs, violence, and promiscui promiscuity. there was also use of the "n" word. leon says it gaves the same feel as gangster rap. but theater critic david coty fears the musical will not appeal to broadway audiences. >> you have to hit the lowest common denominator if you want a good run.

it doesn't mean bad quality. it just means it has broad appeal. yes, on broadway we love to see poor people singing about how terrible their conditions are, but they have to be 19th century french people. >> how is broadway going to change if it's not for plays like this then? >> that's why it's great sign. it's great to see more diverse audiences at the theater, and things that make huge waves culturally aren't necessarily loved in their own times ♪ . >> reporter: leon says he intentionally priced tickets from $39 to $239 in hopes of attracting a different audience. >> "holler if ya hear me" can stand right next to "a rasn in the sun," stand right across the street from "book of mormon," and that makes it better. that's a great investment. >> reporter: they'll see if "holler if ya hear me" will hit a high note on broadway.
