2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with politics. primaries in six states and a bitter republican senate runoff in mississippi. senator thad cochran's narrow victory turned out to be one of two tea party setbacks, and here in new york a veteran congressman's final race is a tight one. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. you know, the tea party had just gained fresh momentum after a stunning republican incumbent loss in virginia earlier this month but now the party suffers two fresh blows, the biggest in mississippi. six-term mississippi republican senator thad cochran beat out rival chris mcdaniel after a tight and bitter race. >> it's a group effort. it's not a solo, and so we all have a right to be proud. >> 76-year-old cochran emerged the winner after targeting

democrats and african-american voters. mcdaniel surprised and angry. >> there is something a bit unusual about a republican primary that's decided by liberal democrats. >> the tea party was on a role when a little known challenger defeated house majority leader eric cantor earlier this month but tuesday's primaries didn't go as well as hoped for the group. the tea party suffered another loss in an oklahoma senate primary where two-term congressman james lankford captured more than 50% of the vote against several opponents including t.w. shannon who argued lankford was not conservative enough. he's looking to replace senator tom coburn. >> the solutions we bring are not for a certain group. they actually work in every state in our nation. >> the state's other challenger defeated for ours in hid bid for the term. charlie rangel declared victory before the race was even called.

he's now looking to secure a 23rd term. now, these primaries are seen as unlikely to affect the partisan senate makeup but they could affect the tea party. the most recent cbs news/new york times poll shows 36% claim themselves as tea party. that's 51% from last december. >> thank you, susan. this morning flood warnings and watches are posted in parts of texas and oklahoma, and severe thunderstorms are possible for the plains later today. damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes may develop as the storm system moves east. a tornado hit central indiana yesterday afternoon. winds of 100 miles per hour threw an r.v. into a home. more than a dozen homes were damaged just southwest of indianapolis. no injuries are reported. >> i was scared to death. i didn't know what was going on. so i had to calm my grandkids down. i got one 6-year-old and

2-year-old, and i had to take care of them. >> when the guys come here and saved us, and they said, is anybody here, is anybody here? >> and last night in chicago, the storm system caused flooding on city streets and highways. at one point the eisenhower expressway was closed in both directions trapping drivers for hours. heavy rain triggered flooding in parts of ft. worth, texas, yesterday afternoon. the water rose quickly, flooding streets and trapping drivers, but no injuries were reported. more rain is possible today though. and the flooding is getting worse in parts of minnesota. rivers and lakes across much of testimony states are overflowing their banks. the mississippi was about five feet above flood stage yesterday. the high waters also causing damaging mudslides. and now to the latest on the crisis in iraq. the pentagon says about 150 u.s. troops are on the ground in baghdad to advise iraqi forces.

prime minister nuri al maliki concedes for now much of iraq to insurgent forces. he's focused on protecting the capital, and president obama briefed them yesterday on efforts, but yesterday in iraq secretary john kerry faced resistance when he tried to persuade kurdish leaders to join a new government. >> there's a great dissatisfaction here in iraq with the current government, and i ran into a universal sense, a commitment, a desire by iraqis to make up for the mistakes that had been made in the past. now, what that means in terms of personalities or individuals who might fill one role or the other, i can't tell you. that's up to iraqis. >> kurdish president massoud barzani told kerry we are facing a new reality and a new iraq. the nation's top archivist said the internal revenue service did not follow the law

when it failed to report the lost e-mails. the e-mails belong to lois lerner. she's at the center of the investigation into alleged targeting of conservative groups. craig boswell has our story on tuesday's contentious house hearing. >> reporter: the tone was testy between the committee chairman and a white house official who used to work for the irs. >> yes or no. you're a hostile witness. were you hired -- >> i'm not at all a hostile witness. >> yes, you are. >> reporter: jennifer o'connor served as an irs attorney in 2013 diamondbagathering informa. the committee quizzed o'connor about the lerner e-mail. lerner is the former executive at the center of the scandal who had a computer crash. >> you're saying at the time you did not have information that a bunch of e-mails were lost. >> i did not know her e-mails were missing and unrecoverable.

>> reporter: committee members say o'connor is wasting their time. >> your testimony here today is stretch at best. >> reporter: they want to see if anyone involved outside the irs was involved in the conservative groups. >> then all of a sudden, oh, my goodness, they lost two years worth of e-mails. listen. i grew up in a bar. this doesn't fast the straight faced test. >> reporter: the irs says it is turning over a total of 67,000 lerner e-mails. craig boswell, cbs news, capitol hill. 20 to 30 pilot errors in the last 14 miles of approach. the ntsb issued its report on the crash of asiana airlines flight 214 in san francisco last july. three people were kill and 187 injured, and as jiff pegues tells us, the federal agency blames the pilots. >> reporter: before the plane crashed at san francisco international airport, all three pilots in the cockpit missed important warnings. according to investigators

coming in for a landing, the plane was off target. it was traveling too low and air speed was too slow to make the runway. the pilots mistakenly believed the auto throttle which controls speed would keep the plane on track. the ntsb concluded the pilots had given too much control to the boeing 777's autopilot functions. >> as the approach proceeded, it seemed to be more compound. >> reporter: the belly struck the runway and the tail of the airplane broke off. investigators say the three people killed, one died after being struck by an emergency exit door that pushed in when the plane cart whealed down the runway. and the other two were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the plane. >> the ultimate message of that is buckle your seat belt. when the cabin crew says buckle your seat belt, buckle your seat belt. that's the number one defense to protect you.

a possible breakthrough in the battle against breast cancer. a new study founds that 3-d mammography finds more cancer and reduces a recall. take a look. >> reporter: 44-year-old went for an annual ma'am gran that uses 3-d rather than the standard flat images. >> this way they have such a better view that they see way more things than they ever could and they're able to detect a lot more. and it hurts less actually. >> reporter: the journal of the medical association reviewed more than 450,000 screening exams. about 170,000 included women receiving both the standard and 3-d mammography. those receiving 3-d mammography had 41% more invasive cancers detected and 15% fewer repeat scans to evaluate inconclusive findings. dr. nancy elliott is the co-director of the montclair breast center in new jersey.

>> the study brings out that women don't have to be called back as often, so, therefore, there's less anxiety. >> reporter: here is the regular digital mammogram of one of dr. elliott's patients. it looks normal. but a 3-d exam shows a hidden cancer, one that was eventually removed. kaplan's exam was clean with no further reviews. >> i think 3-d mammography is a thing of the future. i think if women get the message they're going to get a mammog m mammogram, they should make it count. >> right now the 3-d exam may not be covered by insurance and may include a $50 to $75 charge. and detecting a woman's tumor earlier using 3-d mammography does not mean she'll be less likely to die from breast cancer. for that, further research is needed. dr. jon lapook, cbs news, new york.

veteran character actor eli wallach has died. he's probably best known for his roles in westerns. wallach's first big screen credit came in 1956 and he continued acting until well into his 90s. eli wallach died tuesday. he was 98 years old. and the library of congress said it has acquired a remarkable collection of video interviews that capture the heart of the african-americans in america. as chip reid reports some were famous and some were about to become famous. four years before she died author maya angelou was asked

two people killed in this fiery car accident happened around 3:00 this morning at fifth and harrison. here's the car crashed and then it caught fire. we know one person was ejected from the vehicle. we do have a crew on the way over to the scene right now. we'll have the latest in the next half hour. for more on the accident now, let's check in with elizabeth wenger and find out if it's affecting traffic. >> fortunately it's still very early but if this incident is ongoing, then of course it could impact traffic coming off the bay bridge. the accident happened on city streets near fifth and harrison but the 5th street off-ramp coming off of the bay bridge coming off westbound 80 on the skyway is closed for that police investigation. with the double fatal like this it will likely be closed for some time. bay bridge toll plaza, things look okay so far if you are commuting from oakland trying to get into san francisco. the main lines of the freeway right now look okay but you can't use that 5th street off- ramp in the meantime. so of course we have anne
