good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. recovery efforts are under way this morning in virginia beach after a powerful storm caused extensive damage and injured at least ten people. the severe weather hit thursday afternoon. a possible tornado may have touched down. homes in a five-block radius were damaged by the strong winds. windows were knocked out and trees blown down. a wildfire in central washington is threatening more than 200 homes. the mills canyon fire burned 28 square miles in just two days, and fire officials fear it may double in size. residents of about a dozen homes have been told to evacuate. and a severe drought has lowered water levels at the hoover dam to record levels. levels at lake mead are the lowest since the dam was built on the arizona/california border. lake mead is the primary water source for las vegas. the dam is also affecting production of electricity. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says while

the west is in for more extremely hot weather, the east is in line for a summer cold wave. a little science lesson here to talk about. some big changes coming to u.s. weather. remember super typhoon neoguri, came across japan? it has weakened. it really doesn't look like much anywhere, but it's added energy. it's quickened its flow across the pacific. there's a trough south of alaska. that will deepen in response, and them downstream of that, you push the jet northward. what we see by the end of the weekend is a huge ridge way up across the west coast into canada and that's going to send down the cold air off toward the east of it. so basically you get this big change. heat in the west and big-time cold in the east. now, it is july, so we're not talk about what we saw back in the winter. but well below average temperatures. could even see some lows in the 40s, maybe even 30s next week. meanwhile we'll be baking out west, in particular the pacific northwest where heat warnings are probably going to be necessary.

now, outside of the temperatures, we're also watching storms. you had all that cold bang up on the east coast and we got severe weather. already we're watching here in the megalopolis by tuesday of next week, it's an early heads-up. enjoy the weekend. storm times return next week. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. fighting between hamas and israel continues to escalate. now u.s. is trying to broker a truce. hamas has fired hundreds of rockets into israel from gaza since the violence began four days ago. this morning rockets fired from lebanon hit northern israel. israel retaliated with a barrage of artillery fire and air strikes. ko im has our report. >> reporter: gaza militants fired more rockets into israel this morning. firefighters quickly put out flames after one destroyed a gas station in a southern city. in tel aviv emergency shelters are open for people on edge as hamas missiles target major cities. >> you don't want to go out from

your house just to travel, and you can't stay in your routine. >> reporter: israel says over the past 24 hours gaza militants has launched nearly 200 rockets at israel. the iron dome missile defense system has dropped most of them, including ones fired at jerusalem on thursday. >> it's an outrageous attack, unbearable, unacceptable and the idea is to strike back and strike hamas in order to cease their aggression. >> reporter: israel says it's launched over 100 rockets on hamas since monday. gaza officials say at least 85 palestinians including civilians have been killed. president obama has called israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to pledge u.s. assistance in order to negotiate a cease-fire and he called on both sides to restore calm. but tensions are high. thursday night israelis and palestinians clashed again in the west bank. the israeli army used tear gas

to try to break up the fighting. ko im for cbs news. this morning secretary of state john kerry is in afghanistan trying to find a solution to that country's disputed presidential election. kerry arrived in kabul last night. he plans to meet with the two presidential candidates and president hamid karzai. this morning there are signs of a possible compromise on dealing with the thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the u.s. border. democratic leaders are leaving the door open to speedier deportati deportations. meanwhile as craig boswell reports, the president is urging congress to approve his request for emergency funds to deal with the crisis. >> reporter: president obama's keeping up pressure on congress to approve his emergency request to deal with a flood of young immigrants at the border and pass comprehensive reform. >> ronald reagan passed immigration reform, and you love ronald reagan. let's go ahead and do it. >> reporter: the president looked to enlist support from texas governor rick perry who sent a letter to the white house in 2012 warning about the problem. on capitol hill homeland security secretary jeh johnson testified about why the

administration needs nearly $4 billion. >> given the added transportation cost, given the added enforcement costs, customs and border patrol will run out of money by december. >> reporter: it's a tough sell to the senate appropriations committee. >> how can you come to us with a budget request if you don't know how many courts r how it's going to speed up the process. it's the president's job to lay out a specific plan. >> this is not a complete plan to me. >> reporter: the administration is likely to face an even tougher sell in the republican-controlled house where the battle lines are already drawn. >> this is a problem of the president's own making. he's been president for 5 1/2 years. when's he going to take responsibility for something? >> reporter: while the justice department waits for money to hire dozens of new immigration judges, those already on the job are already prioritizing cases for unaccompanied children. craig boswell, cbs news, capitol hill. house republicans are moving

ahead with plans to sue president obama. they are upset that the administration delayed the employer mandate of the health care law. a draft of the resolution was released yesterday and a hearing is scheduled for next week. a deadly apartment fire in the boston suburb of lowell is under investigation. seven people died including five members of the same family. victims' relatives say there was a stash of fireworks stored in one of the apartments. it's not clear if the fireworks played a role. the fire broke out early thursday morning and the people in the building scrambled to escape. >> we could not get out. we opened the window. we cannot climb out of it. we are screaming. it's all smoke everywhere. we almost died in there. >> i couldn't see nothing. my eyes burned. my chest burned. like nothing. i wanted go down. i just wanted to get saved.

>> the building had an alarm system, but it did not go off. ronald lee haskell is being held in texas this morning on six counts of murder. he is accused of killing his ex-wife's sister, her husband, and four of their children. a 15-year-old girl who was the lone survivor is fighting for her life with a fractured skull after a bullet grazed her head. omar villafranca reports on the shooting spree. >> reporter: mourners console each other and left flowers outside the suburban houston home where police say ronald lee haskell committed mass murder. the 33-year-old suspect was taken to jail just hours after deputies say he shot and killed six people, including four children. a 15-year-old family member survived. authorities say haskell went to the home belongs to his estranged wife's family while dressed as a delivery man. >> he was wearing a pullover fedex-looking shirt, the purple colors of fedex. >> reporter: that's when

investigators say haskell gathered the kids, ages 4 to 13, waited for the parents to come home and then tied them up. in court a prosecutor described what happened next. >> he then shot ought seven of them execution style in the back of the head. >> reporter: neighbors in this quiet community can't believe this shooting spree took place here. >> you see it happen all around in other parts of the world. you don't see it happen here. and so when you see it happen here, it's a lot more closer to home. >> they're resting in the arms of jesus right now. >> reporter: haskell faces capital murder charges and is expected in court again on friday. omar villafranca, cbs news, spring, texas. it was believed to be a major breakthrough in treating hiv and aids. a mississippi girl born with the aid virus was in remission after early treatment, but she is now showing signs that she still has the virus. dr. jon lapook reports on the disappointing development in her case. >> reporter: physicians at the mississippi university medical center have been monitoring the

4-year-old girl since her unusually aggressive treatment during infancy. there had been no trace of the active virus for more than two years, but a routine checkup this month showed the virus had returned. this doctor oversees aids research at the national institutes of health. >> it was obviously disappointing because they were hoping that this would be the first example of a real cure of a baby related to the fact that the baby was treated aggressively very, very early, essentially from the time of birth. >> reporter: the case was especially promising because doctors thought the early regimen might have stopped virus from finding hiding places in the body. at birth the girl tested positive for hiv as wnld immediately treated with a three-drug cocktail. at 29 days she was hiv negative but after treatment the mother stopped treatment and disappeared for five months. when the child was returned to the hospital, doctors were surprised to find no signs of the virus. normally it must be suppressed

kidnapping. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, marlie. asian markets finished mostly lower on worries about the stability of bank in portugal. tokyo's nikkei lost a quarter percent. hong kong's hang seng was flat. here on wall street investors are waiting more earnings reports including well fargo, the nation's number one home mortgage lender. the dow fell 70 points thursday, the nasdaq dropped 22, and the s&p dropped 8. the ftc says amazon hasn't done enough to prevent kids from making so-called inapt purchases. the dispute is over charges in games on kindle devices where it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between virtual or real currency to acquire virtual items. amazon said it already refunded money to some parents.

a judge is telling the irs to explain lost e-mails. the ruling orders the internal revenue service to explain under oath how it lost e-mails to and from executive lois lerner in the controversy over tax exemptions for tea party groups. the irs says it lost the e-mails in 2011 when lerner's computer crashed. and an uber customer takes a ride he won't soon forget. the ceo of a startup company got into uan uber taxi in washingto, d.c., and became a passenger in a wild car chase. the driver was speaking with a d.c. taxi inspector when he sped off with the inspector trailing closely behind. eventually the uber driver stopped and the executive got out safely. marlie? >> that must have been uber scary. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. jill, thanks so much. sports fans wait for a decision from basketball's biggest star. lebron james has yet to announce
