u.n. shelters hoping to escape the punishing israeli air assault on the gaza strip. hamas militants continue their barrage of rocket attacks on the cities as both sides resist calls for a cease-fire. this morning more rockets were fired from lebanon. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> marlie, good morning. the bombing does continue. also the israeli ground troops did enter gaza but it does not appear to be the start of any broad start offensive, this as calls here in washington and inside other western governments for a cease-fire keep on growing louder. israel continued to bomb hamas targets in the gaza strip this morning. hamas has been answering back with rockets of its own. israeli officials say its iron dome missile intercepter stopped 12 on sunday. secretary of state john kerry

called israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu over the weekend and offered to immediate a truce but in an appearance on cbs's "face the nation," netanyahu remained defiant. >> our goal is to achieve suh stainable quiet and security for our people and we're doing that by degrading hamas and other interrogating capeths. i'm not going to say how and when that goal will be achieved whether by diplomatic and military means but that goal has to be achieved. >> thousands of palestinians fled to united nation shelters after israel warned they would bomb the nation. >> and the israeli cabinet is still considered a full ground invasion. tort security forces raided a home belonging to relatives of one of two suspects wanted in relation to the kill of three israeli teenagers last month. those killings further inflamed the most recent tension between israel and the palestinians.

no israeli fatalities are reported so far in this latest conflict. more than 170 palestinians have lost their lives due to israeli air attacks. marlie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thanks so much, susan. secretary of state john kerry is talking about iran today. in vienna kerry meets with iran's foreign minister for a second day. they will try again to make progress on an agreement on iran's nuclear program before july 20th deadline. earlier kerry clinched a deal with afghanistan's presidential candidates to end that country's election crisis. they agreed to a recount of last month's vote. the world cup final was down to the wire and then some. the match went to extra time, and in stunning fashion germany beat argentina, 1-0. thousands of german fans celebrated in were violenttte

exciting finish. >> reporter: it was a tourch meant-winning goal that was more than two decades in the making. germany netted the only score of the game in overtime, 113 minutes into the match against argentina. the country last won the world cup 24 years ago. the goal brought ecstasy to the standard beer garden in manhattan where g it's all leather, kind of tight, but, you know, i'm trying to stretch it out. >> reporter: and a whole lot of german pride. the beer garden, like many restaurants and bars across the country, benefitted from the world cup's surge in popularity among americans. reservations were sold out for

every game. the earlier cup games broke ratings records around the world but this match could be even bigger with more than a billion expected to tune in. he was rooting for argentina, but he said soccer was the winner this past month i i'm happy there are finally a bunch of americans watching soccer. it's pretty amazing. >> reporter: soccer fans only have to wait another four years for the next world cup in russia. wendy gillette for cbs news, new york. a mono rail train at walt disney world in florida had to be evacuated during a severe storm last night. the elevated train stopped running because the power went out. dozens of passengers were safely evacuated using a mechanized lift. there were no injuries. disney officials said the power outage was due to the weather but they're still trying to determine the exact cause. meanwhile deadly lightning storms hit parts of colorado.

bands of thunder and lightning rolled through denver last night and in rocky mountain national park, lightning killed two hikers this weekend. as teri okita reports, lightning deaths at the park are rare. >> reporter: electric storms gripped colorado all week. on friday they turned deadly. rocky mountain national park spokeswoman marla patterson. >> to have two people killed in two days is rare. >> reporter: this woman saw a flash and saw a fellow hike owner the ground. >> went over to the man who was down on the ground and started doing cpr on him until medical help arrived. >> reporter: 21 people have been treated for lightning-related injuries just on friday and safrmtd chad greenliss knows how quickly thunderstorms can form. he took this video from what he thought was the safety of his

garage. >> it was like being dipped in 9 volt battery water. >> reporter: he suffered bumps and bruises and said next time he'll stay inside. ter teri okita, cbs news, los angeles. large areas of the east will suffer cold temperature this week. eric fisher with our cbs station, wbz in boston has details on the summer chill. >> this looks familiar. a big-time cold moving in. at least it's july this time and it will be cool, not bitterly cold. temperatures well below 25 degrees across the plains and midwest. meanwhile the heat will be across the west, particularly the pacific. a lot of cool air is taking crows. 50s and 60s for the highs across the great lakes and 70s as far as oklahoma and texas. st. louis barely getting into the 70s on tuesday and for wednesday low temperatures, 40s and 50s. there'll actually be 30s in here so we may talk about frost

an unmanned commercial cargo ship blasted off from virginia on sunday for the international space station. the cygnus capsule is carrying 3,000 pounds of supplies, mainly food. it's expected to reach the six-man space station crew on wednesday. off the italian coast a major operation to tow away the "costa concordia" cruise ship began this morning. the capsized wreck was righted last year in an amazing engineering operation. 32 people were killed when the ship struck a reef two years ago. the wreck will be searched for the only unrecovered body. it's expected to take at least six days before the ship is floated and towed. an engine fire forced an air india plane to return to a new jersey airport shortly after taking off. flight 144 left newark liberty international airport on sunday with 313 passengers. it was headed for mumbai.

the plane landed safely despite having what an official called multiple blown tires. on the "cbs moneywatch," citigroup is in a possible multi-million-dollar settlement and gas prices dip. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, marlie. asian markets finished mostly higher ahead of policy announcements by the bank of japan tomorrow. tokyo's nikkei added nearly 1%. hong kong's hang seng gained half a percent. wall street investors will be keeping an eye on several key earnings reports due to be released this week. you'll also be listening to what fed chair janet yellen says when she appears before congress. the dow ended at 16,949 on friday. the nasdaq lost 70 points for the week finishing at 4415.

citigroup is expected to announce a deal today to pay the justice department $7 billion to settle an investigation into the bank's shoddy mortgage-backed investments. citigroup argued that it sold only a small number of troubled mortgage-backed securities compared to other banks. the federal government says it's making progress in stopping the large number of payments made to people who should. be getting any. federal agency reported paying as much as $100 billion last year down from $121 billion in 2010. some of the improper payments are the results of fraud or clerical errors. and gasoline prices have declined somewhat in the past three weeks. the lundberg survey, which tracks gas prices, says the average is down 4 cents to $3.67 nationwide. marlie? >> jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. jill, thanks so much. a girl who survived a shooting attack that left six of her family members dead in houston, texas, is speaking out.

game, and bumgarner became the first pitcher in 48 years to hit two grand slams in the same season. the giants bead arizona, 8-4. chris johnson had three hits including a home run as the atlanta braves beat the cubs, 10-7. the braves are now just a percentage point in back of washington in the n.l. east. and minnesota's brian dozier cranked up for tonight's home run derby with two homers against the rockies. the twins beat colorado, 13-5. and we usually don't report on pickup games, but this one is pretty cool. joe montana and jerry rice, one of the all-time great pass combinations in nfl history, played together again saturday night. it was a pickup game for san francisco 49er alums held at candlestick park. more than 25,000 people watched. when we return, detecting alzheimer's. a simple new test that can detect the onset of the disease years before a diagnosis.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. here's another look at this morning's top story. israel continued to bomb hamas targets in gaza and hamas fired back. israel's iron dome intercepted 12 rockets sunday. thousands of palestinians fled to united nations shelters after a warning that israel would bomb northern gaza. an estimated 44 million people around the world suffer from alzheimer's disease. that number is expected to triple by 2050, but researchers say they've developed a promising method to test for the disease years in advance. don dahler takes a look. >> reporter: these bright dots are proteins called beta

amyloids, visit in the retina of a patient diagnosed with alzheimer's disease. beta amyloids are typically found in the brain and are known to be linked to alzheimer's. dr. james galvin is a neurologist with langone medical center. >> what makes it unique is the retina is actually an exception of the brain and so we think a lot of pathology is occurring in the brain may also be occurring in the retina. >> reporter: australian researcher shaun frost tested 40 people using a liquid form curcumin, the natural substance that makes cumin yellow. it allows the doctors to spot the proteins with a simple eye test. frost found that the test positively identify 100% of the participants who had alzheimer's. alzheimer's so far is incurable. so why is it important to be able to detect it? >> well, for several reasons so we have medicines today that treatment the symptoms of the disease, so you'd like to be

able to pick up the disease as soon as possible so you can start someone on an available medicine. but more importantly in order to develop new therapies we need to be able to identify people at the earliest possible stages. >> reporter: currently the disease is detected through spinal taps or p.e.t. scans, which are invasive, expensive, at not readily available. the developers of the eye test say it can predict the onset of alzheimer's 15 to 20 years before a full diagnosis. the clinical study is expected to be completed later this year. don dahler, cbs news, new york. a new study out this morning in pediatrics finds the risks for sudden infant death syndrome are different for younger and older babies. researchers say the predominant risk factor for sids and other sleep-related causes of sleep immortality for three months is bed sharing. for babies four months to a year, the risk is rolling with objects like blankets or stuffed animals in the sleep area.
