7:04 am
the air strikes did continue but that escalation did not happen. in israel this morning, the country's military says it shot down a drone launched from gaza. apparently the first time palestinian militants have used that technology. the israeli military says it hit a weapons storage facility overnight and targeted 12 palestinian militants over the last 24 hours. but in the hospital this morning we found not militants, but two brothers. one aged 4 and the other aged 2. they were injured when an air strike hit their neighbor's house. their father mohammed told us the israeli military telephoned a neighbor to warn them to evacuate. they only had three minutes and didn't make it out in time. i wish it were me lying here wounded, he said, not my boys.

7:18 am
us? >> these findings are so important because they're the first large-scale analysis of sids risk based on age and developmental stage. what we found for babies 3 months and younger the predominant risk factor had to do can co-sleeping, sleeping in a bed with someone else. for babies older than four months their predominant risk factor had to do more with the crib environment. if there were dangerous objects in the crib or blankets around them. even though we don't know what happens at the exact moment babies stop breathing in sids we do know about the risk factors and that's how we prevent it. >> does this suggest that it is preventible? >> very much so just by knowing the risk factors. in this case co-sleeping basically includes sleeping with a parent sleeping with a sibling or even a pet, even an animal in the bed. now, having your babies sleep in the same room as you is not a risk factor but having them in
7:19 am
the same bed has been shown to increase those risks. but the rates have been coming down. >> you know i think that's one of the very very best examples of a great public health campaign. in the mid-'90s there was a campaign to raise awareness of the risk of putting your baby to sleep on any position other than their back. since then the rates of sids have dropped more than 50%. so really just that -- getting rid of that one risk factor has made a huge huge impact. >> interesting. >> thank you doctor. >> thank you. meantime it is about 7:19. ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll check headlines from around the nation. plus lebron james talks about the decision watched by the world. the man-to-man conversation if you're heading out today, likely to be the hottest day of the week. some hazy sunshine out over the bay right now and looking back towards san francisco. yeah, the temperatures are going to be soaring this afternoon. fiftys and 60s now, the high
