this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 8th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. three years after the withdrawal of u.s. troops from iraq, military aircraft are making a return. american cargo planes escorted by fighter jets dropped humanitarian aid to tens of thousands of iraqi religious minorities. the president says it's an effort to prevent a genocide. it's happening in the sinjar mountains in the northwestern area of iraq. they were forced into the area as the takeover of iraqi resources continues to expand. tara mergener reports from washington. >> reporter: president obama authorized the targeted air strikes on iraq but he was quick to say they that does not mean war. >> reporter: the militant group known as isis is said to be advancing toward the city of

erbil where american diplomats and civilians are serving. >> we are prepared to take action if they threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in iraq. >> reporter: the president also confirmed humanitarian air drops of food and water near sinjar mountain where thousands of religious minorities are stranded. they have been driving religious from their homes. they're dying of starvation and water. some republicans have suggested the president doesn't need their go-ahead to take action in iraq. the u.s. withdrew fully from iraq in 2011 after nearly ten years of war. the president is pushing for a broader diplomatic strategy to solve the problems in iraq. >> there is no american military solution to the larger crisis in iraq. >> reporter: many hope the humanitarian solutions will save lives.

tara mergener for cbs news, s news correspondent clarissa ward joins us on the phone from gaza. clarissa, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that cease-fire expired at 8:00 a.m. and at 8:01 we heard the first rocket from the gaza strip. we've heard air strikes from the israeli military. we were driving around. we saw thick black house and we saw another house just hit with man running out of the door with his son all of this because there appears to be a yet.

communities are without power and several hundred spent the night at emergency shelters with iselle on the path. those on the island insist they're ready. >> we've got water, we even got spam, we've got vienna sausage. we're good go. no worries. >> reporter: the storm is packing powerful winds, hen rain and strong surf as it approaches

the big one. bill watson lives a block from the ocean and says he's not taking any chances. >> it's just not worth taking the risk because there is some danger here. >> we didn't want to feel frightened overnight so we decided to come in here. better to be safe than sorry. >> reporter: residents stocked their shelves. on some parts of the big island the storm is expected to dump as much as a foot of rainfall which could cause landslides and while iselle is the first hurricane to make a direct hit on hawaii in 20 years, an even stronger storm hurricane julio is falling just behind. >> we're ready. i can assure you. we're on the ball and ready to respond in any way necessary. >> reporter: forecasters expect julio to pass just north of the island sometime on sunday. and that second storm julio has been upgraded to category 3 hurricane with winds up to 115

miles an hour. anne-marie, while it's expected to follow a tract north of the islands, it's expected to dump plenty of rain on the area by sunday. >> i'm sure. thank you, bigad. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbbz is following the storm and tells us what to expect in the coming days. a tree of oh storms. genevieve is way out in the central pacific but we do have iselle making its approach and over toward the big islands, and that will be happening in the next couple of hours, perhaps keeping the hurricane's intensity if that's the case, the first hurricane to make landfall. right behind it we have julio. not too far away from iselle. here's the track. it will be working its way across the big island, then taking a position just to the south of maui and oh roy huh as we head through friday. all of these times, local hawaiian time. them by saturday it's well off to the west and no longer an issue.

the winds will be strong, especially across the big i hand. this is where you have complex rain following up. then tropical storm winds in place like maui and across the southern end of oh roy huh and the wind field is going to work its way parter off to the south and seems to be bag issue. we have hurricane warnings up and that includes the big island. tropical storm warnings for the rest of the chain. there will be local heavy rainfall and flash flooding for the rest of the island. locally up to a foot of rainfall especially where there are taller mountains and that's going to lead to dangerous flooding. in terms of julio as we watch this over the next several days. likely to take a farther northern jog just north of the northern i lapsd. we'll watch this carefully farther to the south. we could have significantishes for hawaii. we'll keep you updated. i'm eric fisher for cs news. >> this morning the world health organization is declaring the ebola outbreak an international

this year, malaysian airlines are being nationalized. the struggling airline is now being removed from the country's stock exchange and will get a complete restructuring. anne-marie? >> all right. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thanks a lot, jill. in sports now, a frightening moment in baseball against pittsburgh last night. miami marlins pitcher dan jennings takes a line drive off the head. he remained conscious and was responding to questions but was hospitalized overnight with a concussion. the pirates beat the marlins, 7-2. and espn suspended radio host dave le batard. he paid for a sign you're welcome, lebron, love, miami. it points out when lebron left he did not thank the miami fans.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. and here's another look at this morning's top stories. u.s. warplanes have re-entered iraq. president obama has authorized targeted air strikes against the islamic rebel group isis as it pushes toward a northern iraqi city where american military advisers and diplomats are stationed. the u.s. has also started

dropping food and water to tens of thousands of rereligious minorities that are being thr t threatened by isis. fired at least ten rockets. the three-day morning to you. hurricane is elle is continuing to bring these strong winds of 85 miles per hour. we're continuing see this band of rain and forecasters believe we may not have seen the worst just yet. as we mentioned, thousands of people are without power and several hundred people spent the night at emergency shelters with the storm continuing on its path across the big island.

now all this is happening while a second hurricane hue joe is turning not far behind. that storm was actually recently upgraded to a category 3 hurricane with winds up to 115 miles per how. and, anne-marie, while it's expected to go just north of the hawaiian islands, it's still likely to dump plenty of rain on the region by sunday. >> bigad, i'm curious about conditions right now. it doesn't look like the rain was falling as hard as it us when we spoke to you not too long ago. >> reporter: yeah. it's been somewhat sporadic. right now we've been in a lull for the past hour or so. we've seen sporadic amounts of rain every now and then. but this certainly isn't the worst of what we've seen, nor is it the worst of what we swekt expect to see. really in the next couple of hours is what forecasters believe might end up being the worth part of iselle. >> all right p bigad shaban in hawaii. they you very much. we'll haves this

wildfires some residents are n returning to their homes in columbian gorge today. a wind-driven smoky fire has grown to more than 620 acres near the small town of rowena. more than 140 homes wither evacuated as the flames got closer, but now the danger has backed off as fire teams create safe zones around homes. and in california a deer hunter allegedly started the rim fire a year ago. it burned 400 square miles. prosecutors say keith emerald lit a campfire that got out of control. he has not been arrested and no court date has been set for his arraignment.

a company in new york is developing new technology to help locate firefighters when they are battling wildfires. the prescott arizona fire department which lost 19 hotshot firefighters last year is testing it. cnet's sumi das shows us how it works. >> reporter: the 2013 yarnell hill fire claimed the lives of 19 hotshots from prescott, arizona, when the firefighters' exact location couldn't be pinpointed. >> they were quickly being overrun by fire, and, again, some of the last words prior to them perishing in the fire were where are you. >> reporter: now, technology originally developed for the military by new york-based persistent systems, aims to drastically improve two-way communications between fire crews and wild fire command centers. >> it really is mobile ad hoc networking. it allows every radio to repeat

through every other radio no matter where they move or how desperate the situation becomes. >> reporter: in prescott, arizona, they're putting wave relay to the test. >> there's a harness, and it gets affixed to your chest and it's got a little flip-down tablet as you can see right here. then gets at radio system here. >> reporter: the radio service personnel cell towers for firefighters. it enables them to better track the firefighters in the field. >> we've got a fire crew, a couple of different firefighter elements. >> reporter: and firefighters to know more about the lay of the land. by drawing on a tablet, an operation supervisor can remotely guide a fireman to a safer location. pictures and live video can also be shared. crews not only receive information via wave relay, they can use an android tablet to send crucial information back to the command center. persistent systems and the prescott fire department plan to continue the testing. >> fireman out. >> reporter: with an eye toward using wave relays during next year's fire season. in minden, nevada, i'm sumi das
