captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, august 25th, 2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. this morning recovery efforts are under way in california's wine country after the strongest earthquake there in 25 years. the 6 pont 0 magnitude earthquake hit early yesterday morning centered near the city of napa. that's northeast of san francisco. up to 100 homes and buildings are severely damaged. more than 150 people suffered mostly minor injuries. 12 people were hospitalized including a 13-year-old boy listed in critical condition. some of the worst damage was to area wineries. it's estimated damage overall could reach a billion dollars. alison harmelin is in napa. alison, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. if you look behind me, the sign

points the way to the local market, the opera, the train station. this is the heart of downtown napa, and this morning it's devastated. the destruction is clear as residents and businesses clean up downtown napa. the strongest earthquake to hit napa in a quarter of a century rippled through sunday morning. >> it was just bouncing around like we were on a roller-coaster ride from hell. >> reporter: the tremors broke gas lines, ruptured 60 water mains and caused fires that destroyed at least six homes. the earthquake damaged many of napa's historic buildings. city officials have determined at least 33 buildings are now uninhabitable. that includes the napa county courthouse, a century-old library and christina jamison's home. >> i called 911. i said you guys have to come of. my house may fall over right now. >> reporter: the quake struck the heart of california's wine country near the peak of harvest.

the violent shaking cracked dozens of tanks and barrels and wine bottles sending hundreds of gallons of top vintage quality wine down the drain. >> it's a scary time because of the loss of inventory, and, you know, it takes a lot of time and effort to make wine. you don't turn it around overnight. >> reporter: the exact cost of damage to napa is unclear, but many wineries estimate they've lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. in spite of all the damage here, the consensus amongst the people in this tight knit community, they're just very grateful things weren't worse. >> a silver lining there. alison harmelin in napa. thank you. and about 230 miles north of napa, a wildfire is threatening hundreds of homes. firefighters are battling a fire near weaverville, which is near the border of oregon. 150 homes were evacuated sunday. about 520 homes and businesses are in danger. one square mile has burned. high winds caused it to spread quickly.

and this morning tropical storm cristobal is hitting the bahamas with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. cristobal is headed north. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the latest on the storm's path. >> the tropic's very active right now. here's the latest on cristobal. it's to the north of the bahamas. it brings heavy rain. still a bit of a ragged storm. the good news there's circulation. this is the official forecast tracked from the hurricane center, keeping it out to sea but moving very slowly. something we'll have to watch close enough to the seaboard. we'll have to watch it for the next couple of days. marie, a textbook monster. some of those wave heights over 40 feet near the center and 10 to 20-foot waves should make their way to southern california arriving on tuesday. another big story for today,

it is the heat. it keeps on going. major heat index values of 100, 110 in the middle of the country, also up toward chicago. it feels very much like summer when we're at the tail end of august. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. michael brown is being buried today. brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot to death by a white policeman august 9th in a st. louis suburb. the shooting set off days of unrest. at a peace rally in st. louis yesterday, his father pleaded for a day of silence. >> all i want is peace while my son is being laid to rest. can you please, please take a day of silence so i can -- so we can lay our son to rest. please. that's all i ask. >> give it up. give it up. >> the parents of trayvon martin also spoke, calling for stronger family ties and better education. thousands are expected to attend brown's funeral. this morning an american

journalist held hostage in syria for two years is free. peter theo curtis was released sunday to u.n. officials. kur us the was being held by an al qaeda affiliate group called the nursa front. according to "the new york times," no ransom was paid. news of curtis's release came less than a week after the video of the execution of james foley surfaced. the video was posted by the islamic militant group isis. on sunday foley's friends and family gathered at a memorial service in his hometown of new hampshire. foley spent nearly two years in captivity. isis was demanding $132 million for his release and as juliana goldman reports a massive effort is under way to identify and locate the man who killed foley. >> reporter: a senior administration official says u.s. and british intelligence

agencies have narrowed the list to fewer than ten suspects. officers are scrutinizing the foley execution video using sophisticated technology to feed the killer's voice and compare it with the database of known terrorists. speaking to the british ambassador to the u.s., he said he's doing all he can to identify the man on the video and is actively looking for other ways to help the iraqi government fight isis. >> and who themselves, we'd like to think, will want to become involved in pushing back against this horrific barbaric organization that threatens their way of life as well as ours. >> reporter: the killer's british accent sparked frenzy. some suspect this london rapper turned jihadist could be at the top of the list. they report that he went to syria last year and is the son of an egyptian born militant currently awaiting trial in the states for the charges related to the 1998 embassy bombings in

africa. but sources caution, he's just about one of 500 british citizens who have linked up with radical islamic groups in iraq and while they're making progress working through names, they do not have a single suspect yet. former cia deputy director mike morell says finding foley's killer is important but the mission is larger than any one terrorist. >> it doesn't really matter who the executioner was. this was the group that killed james foley, and this order came from the very top of the group. >> fbi teams are heading to the uk to help with the search. a senior obama administration official tells cbs news they have to be careful. they want to find foley's killer but releasing too much information could put the remaining hostages in even greater danger. juliana goldman, cbs news, washington. there was a two-pronged hack attack against sony allegedly by the same group. the first shut down sony's play station and sony entertainment networks. they say they're trying to get

them back in service. they say nobody's persnal information was taken. three years ago more than 77 million accounts were compromised. the second hack attack targeted an american airlines plane with 185 people on board but the haerks were only going after one passenger, sony exec john smedley. flight 362 left sunday heading to san diego. it made an emergency landing in phoenix. the hackers tweeted there was a bomb onboard. dogs searched the craft but found nothing. smedley confirmed that his flight was diverted for security reasons. no one was injured. coming up on the "morning news," bridge security breach. new york's famous brooklyn bridge is once again the target of a trespasser. we'll tell you why he was up there. this is the "cbs morning news." there. this is the "cbs morning news." ♪

the country. & the run through the little league world series for chicago's jackie robinson west was a memorable one but the young men fell short of their ultimate goal. the u.s. champions lost in the final to south korea by a score of 8-4. it is south korea's third little league title, but as elaine quijano reports, they inspired just their hometown. >> reporter: it's been 31 years since the jackie robinson west all-stars last made it to the little league world series. the 13 players from chicago's far south side made the most of the moment. they made it here by winning five games over ten days. including a come-from-behind win over hard-hitting las vegas. 620 miles away in chicago the cheers have been the loudest.

york city's rockaway beach, a 35-foot humpback whale is taking the collective breath away from a boatload of whale watchers. >> i think it's so cool that they just go up like that and then just go right back in. >> it's been the best kept secret in new york. >> reporter: researcher reports that humpback whales in and around new york city and they're on the rise. >> like old whalists. high on the boat. looking out. trying to find a whale. here comes the tail. >> reporter: his group has identified at least 252 whale sightings in the area. that's almost double two years ago. >> we think we're seeing more and more whales every year because of the return of the menhaden. menhaden is their prey fish. >> reporter: the food supply and cleaner water is not only good news for watchers but photographers like arty ratlich who's getting pictures like no one else has.
