good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the united states is checking an unconfirmed report that a second american fighting with islamic militants in syria has been killed. meanwhile, the mother of an american journalist held hostage by isis is pleading for his life. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a member of the free syrian army, that's the u.s.-backed group that is said to have killed american douglas mccain, now says there were two americans killed fighting alongside the militants. and this word comes as the life of another freelance journalist could be in danger. a second american from the minneapolis area was killed fighting for the islamic jihadist group isis. friends and family of the victim tell cbs news. u.s. officials say they are trying to confirm the report. the news comes following confirmation another u.s. citizen, douglas mcarthur mccain died fighting alongside the terrorists over the weekend.

militant groups are believed to be using facebook, twitter and all social media to recruit westerners to fight. >> there are 1,000 fig from up to 50 countries who have traveled to syria to take up arms alongside isil. >> reporter: the white house is considering taking military action against the militants in syria. isis has taken americans hostage including journalist steven sotloff. >> i am shirley sotloff. my son steven is in your hands. >> reporter: his mother made this video begging his captors to have mercy. >> i want what every mother wants. to live to see her children's children. he plead with you to grant me this. >> reporter: isis threatened to kill sotloff in the same video of the beheading of james foley. on wednesday a group of lawmakers from both parties called for debate and vote here in congress to authorize the president to take military action in iraq and syria.

anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. a former hostage peter theo curtis said he had no idea so many people put so much effort into securing his release. >> there have been literally hundreds of people brave, determined, big-hearted people all over the world working for my release. they have been working for two years on this. >> curtis was freed by a syrian extremist group on sunday after being held for 22 months. speaking yesterday curtis said he was overwhelmed by the kindness of the american people. overseas, heavily armed russian backed separatists are advancing in eastern ukraine this morning. the ukrainian military says russian troops are involved in the fighting. the new offensive appears to be aimed at creating a land link between crimea and russia. one key border city was shelled yesterday as ukrainian and separatist troops battled for control. separatists and russian troops

entered the town this morning. elsewhere, at least three people were killed in the fighting of donetsk. and this morning two powerful storms are churning up the surf on both coasts. hurricane cristobol will past northwest of bermuda today as it races northeast in the atlantic. the storm has sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, but it is not expected to hit the coast. and tropical storm marie is losing strength as it heads west in the pacific. cristobol is causing dangerous conditions along the east coast though. there are life threatening surf and rip currents from north carolina to long island. seven deaths are blamed on the storm, most from flooding in the caribbe caribbean. meanwhile, the pacific coast is feeling the effects from tropical storm marie. huge waves pounded catalina island damaging the pier and boat yard. surfers brave the giant waves in southern california. as bigad shaban reports, there was flooding in low lying beach communities. >> reporter: powerful waves up

to 15 feet high slammed the california coast. the largest surf in years from a summer storm is on full display. >> this is part of the floor. it's already been buckled up. >> reporter: hector ram was visiting his aunt's home along seal beach when he heard the waves crash onto the shore. the boardwalk and streets were flooded. he says a foot of water swept through his family's home. >> it moved quickly. not slowly, quickly. you could hear from the sound of the waves that something was going to happen. >> reporter: was any part of the house left dry? >> nothing. not from the garage, nothing. >> reporter: after the initial flooding crews built 6-foot high berms that stretch for a half mile. 6,000 sand bags are being used to act as another barrier. hundreds packed spots like newport beach to watch surfers brave monster breaks. life guards rescued a number of swimmers and surfers. >> i have never seen waves this big in seal beach. i swim in the ocean regularly. i swim around the pier regularly. never this big.

an explosion and fire at an indiana bp oil refinery east of chicago shook nearby homes. the blast yesterday was heard several blocks away. the plant's fire department sprayed the flames with water and there were no injuries reported. the explosion came on the 59th anniversary of a blast there that killed two people. and police in omaha, nebraska, say that a member of the production crew for the television show "cops" was accidentally shot and killed during the investigation of a robbery. omar villafranca says that the police fired the shot. >> this was a friendly fire situation. >> reporter: omaha police say it was an officer's bullet that struck and killed a crew member for the reality show "cops" during a robbery attempt at a fast food restaurant tuesday night.

jpmorgan chase and other banks. russian hackers may have retaliated against u.s. government sponsored sanctions against their country. according to "the new york times" thehackers gained access to checking and savings account information. the new safety concerns being raised over a defect any key electrical component in chrysler vehicles. owners of millions of chrysler cars built between 2007 and 2014 may face engine shutdowns, fires, and unintended acceleration. the center for auto safety believes the problem is a defect in what's called the totally integrated power module. >> chrysler has submitted at least 20 death claims on components that are related to this totally integrated power module or the tipm. we're seeking the underlying documents to see if it was the tipm that caused the fatality. >> chrysler says it is unaware of any related fatalities and that its vehicles meet or exceed

a week and a half ago the national guard was deployed in ferguson, missouri, to end rioting over the police shooting of michael brown. last night the guard left the city as tensions eased. meanwhile, brown's death has many calling for officers to wear cameras. bob orr shows us how other police departments use them. >> on the wrong side of the road. >> reporter: it was 2:00 in the morning when police in laurel, maryland, pulled over a woman driving on the wrong side of the road. one officer was wearing a small camera like this one attached to his glasses. >> go ahead and turn the car off and hand him the keys. >> and this is exactly what he saw. the woman restarted the engine, slammed the car into drive and sped away. >> she just took off. she's going the wrong way on -- northbound. >> reporter: as the camera continued to roll, police gave chase. the woman crashed her car and then tried to flee on foot. pursuing officers hit her wit a

taser and arrested her for drunk driving. >> put your hands behind your back. put your hands behind your back. >> reporter: james brooks, laurel's deputy police chief, says all of his street officers now wear cameras. >> you can actually see that the camera -- as my head moves the camera moves with me. >> reporter: to brooks it's all about accountability. >> reporter: if you didn't have that camera, in that tape the officer would just have his account. >> that's correct. now going down the road you see a car weaving back and forth, you can turn the camera on and start to capture that evidence that you may want to present for a dui case in court. >> reporter: in daytona beach, florida, police wearing cameras caught a man beating his girlfriend. faced with clear video evidence, jeremy archer pleaded guilty to battery and drug possession. police say the recordings have helped diffuse potential confrontation. in the two years they've been used in riolto, california, the use of force is down 48% and
