are off but we are in good hands because anthony mason is here and you look ready. >> they're off, we're on. >> we are very on. we begin with the weather where major storms are creating dangerous conditions along both coasts this morning. hurricane cristobal is causing deadly rip currents in the east. >> and tropical storm marie is battering southern california with gigantic waves. >> oh! oh! just fell. it just fell! >> overnight in malibu a historic lifeguard house that served as a backdrop in movies and tv shows collapsed into the ocean. teri okita is in seal beach where the big waves are still coming. teri, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and good morning to you here in the west. the waves have been spectacular. they're calming down but still dangerous with swells as high as 25 feet in some areas. that's led to more than 230 rescues since tuesday. one death is being investigated

as surf-related and the high-risk show isn't over yet. along the southern california coast, nature is treating wave watchers to a show unlike any they have ever seen. >> these guys getting crazy rides and people cheering on the beach. it's a good show for free. >> it's exciting to see this much surf. i don't think we've seen a swell like this in a decade or so. >> reporter: the massive waves were relentless from newport beach, where this boogie border was thrown sky high to catalina island, where two piers were destroyed and boats and vehicles were tossed ashore to malibu where water threatened multimillion dollar homes and damaged the pier. it's all because of tropical storm marie, 800 miles west of mexico's baja california peninsula. even surfers like laird hamilton couldn't resist caught in this video riding directly under the malibu pier. hamilton not only surfed he saved. he assisted in a rescue. >> his eyes were big and he was

appreciative that he was back on the land. >> reporter: one of hundreds that kept lifeguards busy up and down the coast. lifeguard jacob reed says he rescued one man caught in a powerful current. >> he was panicked he was very scared. he said i went in way too far over my head. >> reporter: bulldozers were called in to beach up the shoreline and protect expensive beach homes. thousands of spectators stayed out of the water, but not necessarily out of harm's way, snapping pictures dangerously close to the crashing waves. >> the surge comes up it wraps around the back of them and then can pull them back out to the water, out to sea. >> reporter: the seal beach pier behind me is closed until safety inspectors can get in and check it and give it the all clear to reopen. as for the high surf it's expected to last until at least tomorrow late afternoon, maybe early evening, and then it will die down making the beach much

safer for beachgoers through the long holiday weekend. >> thanks, teri. it will be another day of high surf along the east coast as hurricane cristobal passes far offshore. in ocean city maryland an 18-year-old swimmer from virginia drowned in a rip current wednesday. the beach patrol saved dozens of people. and big hail hit limon, colorado, that's southeast of denver. millions could see more severe weather there today. meteorologist megan glaros of our cbs station wbbm is tracking the storms. >> good morning, and good morning to our viewers in the west. marie may just be a tropical storm at this point but big waves will still be a factor across portions of southern california today. we are looking at 10 to 15 foot breakers especially across portions of los angeles and ventura counties. coastal flooding will be a factor and any south and southeast- facing beaches will be

the hardest hit. there could be isolated sets with 20-foot breakers from marie that should begin to subside going into friday. the high temperature in las vegas today, 101 degrees. 90 in los angeles. 76 degrees in seattle. and if you're heading into the center part of the country, watch out for the potential for flooding from the great plains today working into the great lakes as we move into the labor day weekend. gayle, anthony? >> megan, thanks. reports this morning say computer hackers may have hit several major american banks. the security breach apparently exposed account numbers at jpmorgan chase. bob orr is in washington where the fbi is on the case. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, these latest cyber attacks happened earlier this month and apparently were aimed at stealing checking and savings account information from a number of major u.s. banks, including jpmorgan. law enforcement sources tell us the fbi and secret service now are working to determine the overall scope of this breach, which apparently involved a series of coordinated attacks.

it's not clear at the moment how much data may have been taken. a report by bloomberg says the attacks appear to be the work of sophisticated russian cyber thieves, well beyond the capability of amateur hackers. and reports suggest the data theft may be in retaliation for recent u.s. financial sanctions on russia. while the targeted banks are not confirming these specific attacks, a spokesman for jpmorgan gave us the following statement. companies of our size unfortunately experience cyber attacks nearly every day. we have multiple layers of defense to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels. to this point jpmorgan has not seen any unusual fraud activity. the fbi is not commenting. gayle. >> thank you, bob. wee hearing from the first time from the family of steven sotloff, an american prisoner in syria threatened with death. in a message released yesterday, his mother begs the leader of isis to set her son free. margaret brennan is tracking developments from the state department and she joins us this

morning. margaret, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and good morning to our viewers in the west. the video produced by the sotloff family was released in both arabic and in english around the world. it's an 11th hour plea for help since all u.s. efforts and other diplomatic channels failed. >> i am shirley sotloff. my son, steven is in your hands. >> reporter: the mother of kidnapped journalist steven sotloff made an impassioned video plea for help. >> we want to see him home safe and sound and to hug him. >> reporter: steven sotloff has been held captive by isis since last august but the world first saw his face last week. that's when isis released this video showing the beheading of fellow journalist james foal owe. the same executioner threatened to kill sotloff next unless the u.s. calls off air strikes in iraq. on wednesday his mother directly addressed the isis leader an bu

bakr al baghdadi and begged for his mercy. >> i want what every mother wants, to see her children's children. >> our thoughts and prayers are with mr. sotloff's family at this very difficult and trying time. >> reporter: another american hostage, peter theo curtis was released on sunday. he was reunited with his mother at boston's logan airport on wednesday after 22 months of captivity in syria. >> i had no idea that so much effort was being expendinged on my behalf. >> reporter: curtis had been held by a different terror group known at jubhat al nusra. outside his mother's house in cambridge, massachusetts, on wednesday, he told reporters how thankful he was to be free. >> i suddenly remember how good the american people are and what kindness they have in their hearts, and to all those people i say a huge thank you from my heart, from the bottom of my

heart. >> reporter: as for the three other americans still being held by isis it's not clear whether that group is motivated by ransom or the pr strategic value that comes from holding americans hostage. >> margaret thank you. we're learning this morning about another american reportedly killed in syria's civil war. u.s. officials say they're trying to confirm the report but friends and family say a man from the minneapolis area died last weekend fighting with isis forces in syria of the the man came from the same region as 33-year-old douglas mccain, who also was killed last weekend fighting alongside isis. back in may, another american from florida carried out a suicide bombing in northern syria. a sister of the boston marathon bombing suspect is due in court next month after being arrested for an alleged bomb threat of her own. ailina tsarnaev turned herself in to new york police yesterday.

she is charged with aggravated harassment. she allegedly threatened to bomb a woman who was romantically involved with her boyfriend. a new refined search is in the works for missing malaysia airlines flight 370. the boeing 777 vanished over the indian ocean in march with 239 people aboard. investigators now say the jet may have left its course earlier than thought. they're bringing in a dutch company to conduct a new massive underwater search. it will start next month and could last a year at a cost of about $50 million. this morning ukraine's president says russian troops are in ukrainian territory. the russians and heavily armed separatists are advancing down the coast of eastern ukraine. our u.s. ambassador to ukraine wrote on twitter that an increasing number of russian troops are fighting in ukrainian territory. overnight city officials in donetsk say 11 people were killed. ukrainian forces are retreating. this new offensive appears to be aimed at creating a land link

between the crimean coastline and russia. a texas father accused in a revenge killing is free this morning. he was acquitted of murder charges after prosecutors argued he shot to death a drunk driver who had killed his two sons. man well bojorquez say prosecutors had a weak case. >> reporter: it all came down to evidence and in the end the prosecution did not have enough to convince the jury that david barajas pulled the trigger in an act of revenge. they also could not overcome the sympathy many felt for the father's loss. david barajas who was facing life in prison walked out of court with his wife by his side. prosecutors argued the suburban houston man shot and killed a drunk driver after his two sons were hit on a roadside near their home. the jury disagreed. >> i give all the honor and glory to god. >> reporter: the 32-year-old

cried when the not guilty verdict was read. the jury deliberated for less than three hours. >> it's a weight off my back. >> reporter: the couple witnessed the death of their sons in december 2012. the family was driving down a dark rural texas road when their truck ran out of gas. 12-year-old david jr. and 11-year-old caleb got out to push. >> sometimes i wish we would have all been taken together but there's no going back. i have to live with the fact and my husband has to live with the fact that we did let our kids off that truck. >> reporter: they were less than 100 yards from their home when 20-year-old jose banda jr., who was drunk, plowed into them. tests later showed that banda's blood alcohol concentration was twice the legal limit. he was shot in the head. >> i respect the jury system. >> reporter: the district attorney insisted investigators correctly pointed the finger at barajas and that the actual killer was not at large. >> the sheriff's department did a fabulous job. i think circumstantial evidence

cases will always be difficult. >> reporter: while barajas says he is not sure who killed jose banda, his attorney called it an unsolved crime. >> so we're not sure who killed mr. banda, but somebody killed mr. banda and it wasn't mr. barajas. >> reporter: banda's family did not speak after the verdict. there was little physical evidence tying barajas to the killing. ammunition and a holster for the type of gun used in the murder were found in the barajas family home but the gun used was not found. gayle. >> thank you manuel. a tv crew recording an episode of "cops" documented the death of their own sound man when they got caught up in a police shootout in omaha. jim axelrod is here with how the reality show production turned very tragic. jim, good morning. >> good morning. investigators say it was police gunfire that actually killed the crew member. the suspect, it turned out, was only armed with a pellet gun, but police say it looked like the real thing. >> suspect wearing a black

hoodie, white bandana. >> reporter: it was supposed to be just another episode of the long-running tv show "cops." >> cops is filled on location with the men and women of law enforcement. >> reporter: a production crew embedded with omaha police was at the scene as three officers responded to a robbery in progress at this wendy's. >> the witnesses described hearing the suspect's handgun being fired and seeing the slide recoil with the shots. >> reporter: omaha's chief of police says the suspect, a parolee with a long criminal history, was armed with a type of pellet gun that looks and sounds like an actual firearm. >> it became a chaotic scene. the cameraman made his way into the eating area and was able to get down and hold the camera up. >> reporter: police released these images from the cameraman's foot annual showing how the crew's audio supervisor bryce dion got caught in the crossfire. >> when they encountered the suspect and gunfire ensued and it's a very traumatic video, the officers are returning fire.

bryce is in that vestibule and gets struck by a round. >> we've got a "cops" cameraman hit, white male. he's not conscious. he's slightly breathing. >> reporter: dion a seven-year veteran of "cops" was wearing a bulletproof vest but was hit in an unprotected area and died. >> "cops" truly is a reality show. it's not manipulated, it's not managed, it's not staged it's real and it happens as it happens. >> reporter: the robbery suspect was also shot and killed. omaha's police chief says the officers involved are on the standard paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. >> jim axelrod, thanks jim. a disturbing hoax with roots in virtual reality becomes all too real in a colorado town familiar with gun violence. michelle miller shows us the latest result of a scam called swatting. >> reporter: wednesday morning, jordan mathewson was live

streaming while playing a video game called counter strike. he plays a gunman on a mission to take down imaginary terrorists. >> they're clearing rooms. what in the world? >> reporter: but the fantasy quickly became a reality as mathewson himself became a target of police. >> get your hands up! get your hands up! >> get on the ground. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams burst into the office their weapons drawn and aimed at him. police ordered him to the ground and placed the gamer in handcuffs. local schools and businesses were on lockdown for more than an hour. after finding no threat police realized the 911 call was a prank known as s.w.a.t.ing. it's when someone reports a fake emergency causing police s.w.a.t. teams to respond to the scene. law enforcement says there's nothing funny about it. >> as you can tell there's a lot of resources here so a lot of taxpayer dollars going to work here. it's incredibly dangerous.

this morning she reportedly good thursday morning, everyone. it's 7:26. i'm frank mallicoat. here are the headlines we're following. a woman died at burning man early this morning. she reportedly fell underneath a bus. the investigation still in its early stages? >> the victim's identity has not been released just yet. burning man is happening in nevada's black rock desert and runs through the labor day weekend. damage from sunday's quake estimated at some $300 million. and that's just private homes and businesses in the city of napa. the estimate does not include public buildings or the infrastructure for the town. more than half of the broken water lines have been fixed but almost 500 customers still don't have running waters. traffic and weather coming up right after the break.

chp telling us a couple of accidents out of san leandro are cleared. all lanes are open. we still could see some flashing lights though approaching 98th. you can see it too if you check out the upper right-hand corner of your screen but all lanes are open. we had two separate accidents. one at 98th blocking an area for a while and one at davis. both accidents are cleared. look at the backups. extending out of san leandro. bay bridge backed up through the macarthur maze. with the forecast, here's lawrence. all right. we are starting out with a little more fog around the bay area this morning. lots of sunshine in the afternoon, temperatures going to be hot in the valleys. you will see some 80s and some 90s inland today. 70s and 80s inside the bay. becoming mostly sunny, patchy fog some 70s out toward the coastline. cooler with subtropical moisture coming our way toward friday and saturday.

ighter jets were called to escort a passenger plane that took off from toronto headed for cuba. two female passengers on the flight became unruly. the two may have had a lot of their duty-free alcohol in the lavatory. then they lit a cigarette and set off the fire alarm and were -- >> have you ever been in bathroom with another person inside the plane? >> i'm not answering that gayle. >> vinita? >> i also plead the fifth. a girl shot and killed a man who was helping her with an uzi submachine gun.

they will file no charges in this case. critics say they cannot believe the shooting was allowed to happen. >> we have to keep that held in otherwise the gun won't fire okay? >> these 27 seconds of video have ignited a controversy about children using guns. parents of 59-year-old girl captured their daughter accidentally losing control while firing an uzi and killing her instructor charles baca. bullets & burger the popular shooting range where the accident occurred allows children as young as 8 to fire guns including powerful automatic weapons as long as a parent or instructor is present, and children in most states are legally allowed to fire any type of gun while supervised. but should they be? dan gros from the brady campaign to prevent gun violence says no. >> i think most people would net out it does not make sense to have a 9-year-old having access like that to a machine gun.

>> reporter: accidents have happened before. in 2008 an 8-year-old accidentally killed himself while fires an uzi during a gun show in massachusetts. experts say these types of tragedies can be averted. >> we can prevent kids from having access to unsafe guns. we can step up as parents and concerned citizens and actually take responsibility in our own hands. >> reporter: dan roberts, a gun enthusiast shears his love for shooting with his 9-year-old daughter cheyenne. he said accidental deaths liking this are that accidents. >> it's a tragedy but it's not in any way in my opinion an indictment on fire amples in general, on children. >> a competitive shooter, cheyenne has been firing guns under the careful eye of her father for years and says following the four rules of safety is everything always know your target and be on. always shoot a gun like it's loaded.

always keep your finger off the trigger, and never point it at anyone. >> reporter: for "cbs this morning," john blackstone san francisco. the usc football player once called a hero now confirms he's & a liar and this morning cornerback josh shaw is suspended indefinitely. shaw confessed wednesday he misled school officials after spraining his ankles. he originally claimed he jumped from balcony saturday to rescue his nephew from a swimming pool. his lawyer says he did not break the law but police are looking into a break-in of a woman's apartment who had a relationship with shaw. >> a friend of mine told us once you should always tell the truth because when the truth comes out, it's to your disadvantage. this is a perfect example. his lie was so fan taft cal.

>> and he was so great. a family is demanding answers this morning from southwest airlines. they lost a grandmother for hours. she shared her story with suzanne mccarroll from our denver station. >> what did you think was going to happen to you? >> that i was going to sit there forever. >> i was sitting in a wheelchair. >> earlier this month her daughter dropped her at. but she wasn't allowed to take her mom to the gate without a ticket. a sky cap offered to wheel the 85-year-old inside the terminal but parentally forgot about her. >> he pushed me there and left me. he didn't say anything or do anything and nobody else showed up and i didn't know why i was sitting there. >> reporter: vaticano ended up missing her flight left

colleagues are studying cds like this one, paul winter's 1987 "earth "earthbeat album." it turns out not all the biggest challenges involve documents that are centuries old. >> reporter: one would think, oh, i need to worry about the parchment or paper degrading, not the things from 20 years ago. >> that's correct. that's a challenges thing. we've always focused on traditional material so to speak. >> reporter: how long a cd will last is not as simple how old it is. different manufacturers use different methods with vastly different results when it comes to durability. >> we'd like to say at this specific time these are the ones at absolute risk. the use, the handling the environment all come into play in terms of the longevity. >> reporter: which is where the idea of accelerated aging comes in. the cds are actually cooked in

these chambers and by manipulating the humidity and the temperature, the disks can be aged a certain number of years. >> the only thing that's different is how you artificially aged them. >> they were aged under the same conditions. one survived. one did not. that ee the challenge we have. you never quite know how it's going affect your cd. >> and if you want to preserve your cd collection at home here's a few tips. >> probably don't put any nice fancy labels onto the tops of cds. >> and fair warning, you want to avoid the sharpies. >> there are some things that say it doesn't cause any damage. if you need to just write in the center region. as for preserving the library collection they plan to test the cds every five years to make sure as little as possible is lost to history. >> can you believe at this point

looking into another security breach at the metcalf p-g-&-e bstation. yesterda good morning. here's what's happening around the bay area right now. police are looking into another security breach at the metcalf pg&e substation. yesterday thieves cut through the fence there stole construction equipment. pg&e says security personnel did not properly respond to alarms that were in place. a football coach is accused of embezzling thousands from a high school football program in fairfield. police say lavon haynes took money intended to buy equipment there. the school placed him on administrative leave. starting at 2 p.m., the northbound lanes of i-280 will close from highway 101 to king street in san francisco. caltrans will be working on earthquake retrofit projects there. 280 is set to re-open just in time for the commute after labor day on early tuesday morning. of course, the weekend is coming up.

good morning. if you are a bart rider we do have some delays right now. it looks like they are systemwide but they are in recovery mode which means things should be getting back to normal pretty soon. there was actually a medical emergency on one of the trains near 24th street so right now the bart delays are 10 to 15 minutes and it is affecting the entire system. the rest of mass transit is great. ferries, caltrain, ace, everything else on time. it looks like some folks are getting a head start on the long labor day weekend. bay bridge traffic cleared out early. it's only backed up to the middle of the parking lot right now even though the metering lights remain on. very slow on westbound 238.
