request for authority to arm syrian rebels to fight the extremists. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. there is a sense, a dramatic escalation of world response to the threat of isis is imminent. today's meeting follows a brutal murder of another western hostage with a fourth now threatthreat en ened. the plan right now is a worldwide front to form to destroy the group. secretary of state john kerry and diplomats from around the world are in paris today to try to form a global strategy to defeat the islamic militant group isis. >> we have countries in this region, countries outside of this region, in addition to the united states, all of whom are prepared to engage in military assistance. >> british prime minister david cameron called an emergency meeting of his advisers on sunday after isis beheaded a british citizen and threatened another. >> they claim to do this in the

california, peninsula. the storm made landfall near cabo san lucas, a popular tourist destination. it's dangerous storm with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. 30,000 tourists, most of them tourists, hunkered down in shelters. this morning two wildfires are burning out of control in california, the worst near bass lake, a popular recreation area, burned 21 buildings. about 1,000 residents evacuated. the courtney fire began yesterday afternoon and burned 300 acres. further north a wildfire east of sacramento forced the evacuation of more than 130 homes. >> baltimore ravens running back ray rice will reportedly appeal his indefinite suspension for domestic violence. espn says rice could make his case as early as today. as brian webb reports, the rice

case was just the start of bad week for the nfl that has the league scrambling to salvage its image. >> reporter: the carolina's greg hardy became the third nfl player bench in a week an hour before sunday's game zenagainste detroit lions. he's appealing a july domestic assault conviction. >> it's a very serious issue. >> reporter: a minnesota deactivated star running back adrian peterson after he was charged with child abuse. peterson's attorney said his client admitted to spanking his 4-year-old child with a branch. >> i'll address the peterson case at another time. >> it's a personal life. i only care what goes on on the field. that's all i care about. >> reporter: the nfl indefinitely suspended ray race after a video surfaced showing him punching his fiancee and dragging her onto the elevator.

>> everybody teaches us how to turn it on but nobody how to turn it off. >> if the nfl doesn't police itself, then we will have this. i wouldn't be surprised if we have hearings. >> reporter: nfl commissioner roger goodell is also under fire for his handling of the rice situation. he first suspended rice for only two games before admitting he should have done more. planes carrying banners calling for goodell's resignation flew near several nfl stadiums on sunday. brian webb for cbs news, new york. san francisco 49ers defensive end ray mcdonald played yesterday even though he was arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse. mcdonald was due in court today. mcdonald was accused of hitting his pregnant fiancee. the 49ers say they will allow him to suit up while the legal process plays out. now to politics. hillary clinton returned to iowa, the state that helped derail her bid to the white house.

try new french roast and colombian today. in hawaii, hot lava from one of the world's most active volcanos is still getting closer to a subdivision on the big island. the lava from mt. kilauea advanced 150 yards since saturday. it is flowing underground and sometimes appearing above ground. residents in about 30 homes are preparing for evacuation if needed. and voters in scotland will decide this week if they will break away from the united kingdom to form their own independent country. scotland is one-fourth of the uk, forms about a third of the island of great britain, and is home to 5 million people. mark phillips reports that the vote could be a photo finish. >> reporter: what was once considered literally a pipe dream is now a real possibility. scotland's independence debate

is heating up. weekend's opinion poll says next thursday's vote is too close to call. scots are evenly split between those who will vote to stay in the united kingdom where they've been for three centuries and those who want to break away and become an independent country. alexa monday, the leader for the "yes" campaigns says history is on his side. >> this is an example of a country which has been progressing to rule self government for 100 years. >> reporter: but salmond has problems. he promised they would use the british pounds as currency but the rest of the uk has said forget it, and some of the big banks have got the jitters saying economic uncertainties would force them to move south. the "no" or "better together"

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports, the san francisco 49ers play their first regular season game at their brand-new stadium, but the chicago bears ruined the debut of the $1.2 billion venue. the bears erase a 17-0 deficit thanks to three touchdown catches by brandon marshall, including a one-handed grab just before halftime. chicago wins, 28-20. washington redskins' quarterback robert griffin iii might be looking at another long recovery from injury. in the first quarter against jacksonville, rg3 goes down

in philadelphia last year two long-time high school football rivals were forced to come together. don dahler looks at how the players learned to put their differences aside. >> reporter: for 40 years martin luther king high and germantown high were archrivals. then last year a $304 million budget def deficit forced philadelphia to merge the two schools. as seen in the documentary, "we could be king," what resulted was not pretty. emile medley came from germantown. >> some people didn't already like some people and people wanted to play a lot. >> reporter: coach ed dunn's challenge, forging a football team out of former enemies.

in a city where 40% of the children live in poverty, dunn's other challenge was getting his players to believe life can get better. >> what football allows us to do is give these kids something to do that's positive, that's associated with school. >> reporter: with no money to maintain it, the practice field is mostly dirt. the locker room is a battered old trailer. and for part of last season, coach dunn worked for no pay. >> that's why we practice. that's why we practice in the stuff, that's why we practice in the rain. that's why we practice in 20-degree weather. >> reporter: yet after losing their first two games last year, dunn's passion began to pay off. they began to win. >> regardless of all the turmoil and trauma that comes in these kids' lives and everyone, these guys know that they have each other and they can depend on each other, and that builds family atmosphere. >> we had to prove a lot of

san leandro and right now, all lanes in both directions are closed and we do have a reporter on the scene right now. ryan is on the phone. >> reporter: hi, michelle, yeah, both directions of 880 closed right near marina is where i am. i just got here a couple of minutes ago. we know nine injuries in this crash, three of those are critical, that coming from alameda county fire department. they said the patients had to go to the hospital. i'll describe the scene briefly, what i'm seeing. i'm seeing at least 11 vehicles, a big rig to the side. they have shut down both directions and right now, you have investigators basically taking a look at this debris. there's one, uh, looks like a sports vehicle that has some major front-end damage that i'm seeing right here but they completely set up, uh, basically a big light acting as a beacon for this
