oakland arynd 1965, '66 with a guy name johnny hawksmith of the he was a guitar player, organ player. and flute player. and he wanted to -- he only had the saxophones. >> i guess hi -- i i guess dianne gallagher o.k. he hired me. we were playing that the place call thed showcase. this is many moons ago. and he decided he didn't want to be a band leader. so the three of us that were left, we got together and formed our own little organ trio. i went and bought me an oregon

and we got a busy. >> what did the trumpet come? weur one of the few that can do that. >> actually, he -- he saw me do it, and he was noun for being known for being a little late. so i would just sat in. he actually hired me as a trumpet player. then he started take advantage. you know, we played the first like # 10 or 15 minutes. i got pretty good at the organ. i keep listening to the record. >> what did you call your answering terms? >> that's me. that's me. >> o.k. >> so like i said, when he decided to go solo, that's when

we've been listening to john. he's a legend here. has been playing for all greats that we can name from slash stone to bb king and you can see him on the regular basis at glide. and nine at 11. tell us, how did that begin? how did you connect all this great music? >> it was fate and a fluke. because i was supposed to just be for two weeks because the choir director was playing with a armed -- over in south africa. while he was gone, they needed somebody to play keyboard. and so a buddy of mine that

played drum already caught me up and asked me did i want to do the gig for a couple of weeks? i said sure. play, and he didn't know i played the trumpet. but i played and i played the trumpet -- he liked that. i guess he likes it. [ laughter ] >> so when the director was her name -- when he came back. they didn't find me. i just -- >> and i stayed and i stayed >> . it's been quite the experience. people calling from you will a over the world to celebrate and the liberating programs that are there. but a lot of people come for the glide ensemble.

how did that manage to develop? >> well, they always had a choir, but as time went on, we expanded the band. we started with the fact the saxon phone. wanted the best sectionoplayers every wrsm i had him come in because we were getting ready to make a record and cecil liked that saxo had been joan and the trumpet. we're get get -- i said, why don't weed a a trom phone and that's when joe came in. so we ended up with a and we've had them ever is since. >> this has been 15, 20 years now. >> when it comes to the choir, and i have the privilege of

being there and i see come -- it's who you might be rehearsed throughout the day. how do you come on sunday? i know -- you also select the songs vmentd >> first i got to see what soloists are there. [ laughter ] and i try to set the mood for the preacher to preach. >> uh-huh. >> i think that's my primary job, and, you know, first you want it wake the people up so you done start nothing slow and then the next song -- you can't keep hitting him like that. you know, you've got to wake them up and then calm them down and then fire them back up.

i mean, that's my -- my way of doing that. and so far it has worked and then something boyfriend the preacher preaches that really -- really something. >> you have to be -- always approximate b in tune. the concern -- what song is going to be? >> yeah. because you're trying to bring the people in. i mean, they're already in the building but you want it bring them in to spirit of what's going on at duplied. and we usually -- >> either way. >> now, i read a lot about you. , you know, in the air where the is second of music inspirer chew of music. some people like to keep that

divorce. you've learned to imiep the two. any way you've done that and do it so successfully year in the -- clues to how you do that. people have such a difficult time sometimes seeing the two together. >> i never talk about it because to me, i'm doing what i'm supposed to do. i feel just like a plumber would if he was going to fix your plumbing. >> you've got to do what you're called to do. >> you called to fix somebody's planning many you're going to ask them what religion they are. so that's -- dwrn, you know, i'm a mussitation. i'm dealing with what i supposed too glsmed we're blessed because of -- they put this up for what you brought. they wouldn't be able to find

age of five. he's been playing is zincify, and mastery instruments. even has his young son playing the drums and -- after someone we know too. tell us a little bit about your family's influence. >> well, i actually first started my mom. she played it at church. and she didn't play it by ear. she played by reading music. and she showed me a few things to -- the scales and stuff and how to read music. and then i had a crazy cousin -- cousin leroy. leroy played the piano but he played boogie-woogie. he showed me how to -- ♪ [

music ] ♪ i got into it. once i heard it, i was are gone. >> that was it. it was all over for me. >> my dad, he's the one that loved the music so much he would go buy the records. he gets them by ivory -- nat cipg coal, arthur and i would just sit there and let listen to them for hours. how did you imagine to get with people? at the time, there was a -- a club on by down box daily. >> oh, yeah. >> i actually had two clubs to

show clubs in the supportsman. we would ho -- one club and lou ross in the own e and by miasms at the show case at that time, i got to play with everybody that was tbg. they called it the -- but coming from -- you thought i was. i got to the -- play with and talk with the greatest arm beat and willie john. charles. >> yeah. i played on a record with him years ago. so is -- i heard you say that one of the most difficults

thing is the travels. you don't miss that, huh? no. i like to go bed in my own bred. and i -- i -- and i got to meet some of the members of the band with lord price. and drp -- >> another legend. >> some of those musicians had been on the road with lord price for years. >> i bet he's still envy. >> i'm not sure. >> i think he is. and enthen say only seen their kids like once a year, twice a year. rst would come in town.
