nurse with ebola. it's the first known case of the disease being contracted in the united states. she treated the liberia man who died from the virus last week. another person who came into close contact with the health care worker has been placed in isolation. brian webb reports. >> reporter: a hospital worker treating ebola patient thomas duncan was infected with the virus while wearing a mavgs gown, gloves, and other protective clothing. >> if this individual was exposed, which they were, it is possible that other vims were exposed. >> reporter: health officials believe the workers somehow breached protocol and they're trying to determine exactly what happened. >> one of the areas we look at closely are things like how you take off the gear that might be infected or contaminated. >> reporter: the name of the female patient has not been released. crews started cleaning outside her apartment building and plan to clean inside on monday. city workers went door to door

handing out flyers to alert neighbors. >> i'm definitely going to be taking more precautions. something very scary, very creepy. that is just a few houses down. >> reporter: concern over the spread of the virus was evident across the nation. in massachusetts a medical clinic was shut down briefly when a man who recently returned from liberia complained of a headache and muscle aches. he was transported to the hospital for tests. and in los angeles a hazmat team surrounded a plane from new york that landed with a sick passenger. brian webb for cbs news, new york. another american with ebola is getting better. ashoka mukpo is getting treating in nebraska but is slowly improving. he was working as a cameraman in liberia and was sent to the hospital. he's received an experimental drug and blood transfusion from an ebola survivor. oscar pistorius's sentencing

hearing begins today. it's the first time the south african has been in court since he was convicted of killing his girlfriend last month. the hearing is expected to last several days. pistorius, a double amputee could face up to 15 years in jail. in syria near the turkish border, street-by-street fighting is reported in the town of kobani. turkish troops are trying to hold off fighters with the help of u.s.-led air strikes. former secretary of defense leon panetta says ground troops are needed to provide better intelligence. >> it doesn't have to be american boots on the ground but you have to have people on the ground who can identify targets and help us identify the kind of effective air strikes that are going to be needed if we're going to be able to undermine

and destroy this vicious enemy we're dealing with. >> battle for kobani has forced some 200 thousand refugees across the syrian border. in neighboring iraq, the u.s. was forced to use apache attack helicopters to stop advances in iraq. they were on the verge of attacking iraq's airports last week and they unleashed a series of deadly bombings. >> reporter: the bombing victims were buried. but along with the grief there is angry frustration that hundreds of iraqi security check points and thousands of iraqi police and soldiers can't prevent the bombers from slipping by again and again to slaughter innocent civilians. so what about isis fighters on the attack in the countryside around the capital? could they breach baghdad's security? like this woman and her son,

they choose to be optimistic. could isis take baghdad? >> no. i don't think so. >> no, no, because the borders of baghdad are very secured, okay, from this attack. >> reporter: the news from around the country is deeply worrying. violence has already killed over 13,000 people this year. iraqi forces have made some small gains against isis fighters, but overall they are embattled, demoralized, and deeply in need of american help. there may be no clear conclusion but there's no choice. they have to fight this with a mixture of military strategy, international diplomacy, and tough-minded internal politics. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, baghdad. severe weather is possible from east texas where tornado watches are posted this morning to the ohio valley. meteorologist eric fisher of our

boston station wbz has more on the storm track. >> we're seeing the jet stream take a big plunge down the middle of the country and deep down into the south over the next couple of days. meanwhile a larger ridge on the east coast is going to help build the case. you've got a cover draft of the cold air and warm air and in between as is often the case we'll be talking about thunderstorms and severe weather. heading into monday we've already got storms coming out of the plains. large areas we'll have to watch from indianapolis right on down to the gulf coast. we could see damaging tornadoes, heavy windfall and they start from the west. a lot of warmth for october. the 80s all the way toward cincinnati and it will be warmth will be eased toward the east coast. also some news from the topics. we have tropical storm gonzalo. this will be tracking its way across the u.s. a. british virgin islands. on tuesday, making a close pass to puerto rico, close to the island as a hurricane.

we'll have to keep a close eye on that. and out to the open atlantic as we head toward next week. we'll be keeping a close eye on gonzal gonzalez's future. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. there are two major storms caution problems in asia this morning. a cyclone slammed into east india, killing at least eight people. 400,000 were evacuated from coastal areas and a typhoon hit japan. at least 37 people were injured on okinawa and 150,000 were told to evacuate. the storm could reach tokyo by tomorrow. this morning in downtown hong kong hundreds of pro-democracy protesters tried to reinforce barricades to block streets. earlier police removed some barricades in an effort to ease traffic but the police say the demonstrators could remain on the streets. more demonstrations are planned for today in the st. louis area to protest the shootings of two black teenagers by white police officers.

three, two, one. in minnesota they held the annual pumpkin drop this weekend. a giant pumpkin was dropped from a 100-foot-tall crane smashed onto the ground. that crowd of kids rushed in to grab big pieces of the pumpkin. and just in time for halloween, the pumpkin sun. nasa scientists had some fun combining images of the active regions of the sun from october 8th. the result is an amazing image that looks like a jack-o'-lantern. they used two sets of light wavelengths to create the halloween image of the face of the sun. well, there is something new under the sun with bicycles. they're getting a high-tech makeover. some believe it's the future urban transport. michelle miller takes a look.
