this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, october 20th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. for those who had contact with the first ebola patient diagnosed in the united states, today is a big day. the 21-day incubation period ended at midnight, and their confinement and monitoring is over. meanwhile the government is issuing revised guidance for health care workers dealing with the disease. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. that's right. the quarantine is over for most of the people who had contact with thomas eric duncan. meanwhile federal officials here in washington are trying to ramp up their readiness for future cases, including a new military response team, and also new guidelines for health care workers that involve protective suits that don't leave any of their skin exposed. the confinement is over for the fiancee of thomas eric duncan, the liberian man who was the first person diagnosed with ebola in the u.s.

louise troh and three family members are now free after being kept under armed guard in quarantine for 21 days. duncan was staying at troh's apartment when he first started showing symptoms of ebola. ebola is no longer a threat for about 50 others who had some contact with duncan. >> it's very difficult. you have this uncertainty hanging over your head about your own health. for some a loved one has died or is struggling to overcome the disease and it's restricted their movement. >> the u.s. is continuing to ramp up its response to ebola. on sunday the pentagon announced the formation of a special military support team to assist civilian medical staff here in the u.s. the cdc is also finalizing new safety protocols for health care workers. >> they're going to be much more stringent. >> in the sense of instructions about what you really need to do. >> the new guidelines are expected to set firm standards including full body suits and hoods that protect workers'

necks. along with rigorous new rules for removal of equipment, disinfection, and supervision. two nuses who contracted ebola while caring for thomas duncan are in stable condition. now, there are still about 150 people total still being monitored for the disease. but one of those two nurses, the family of one of those nurses, amber vinson, the one who tested positive for ebola after traveling from dallas to cleveland and back said any suggestion that she would knowingly expose herself to someone with ebola is false and they say she checked in with cdc and was cleared. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. the lab supervisor who handled the specimen from thomas duncan and was being monitored on the cruise ship has tested negative. the ship returned to galveston yesterday. the lab worker and her husband drove home after the cruise

embarked on the trip. two nurses were diagnosed with ebola. the passenger showed no signs of the disease, but self-quarantined on the ship. the u.s. military dropped weapons and other supplies to kurdish forces fighting islamic extremists in syria. u.s. air strikes have slowed the isis advance on kobani. cargo planes dropped 27 bundles of arms, ammunition, and medical supplies provided by kurdish authorities in iraq. forensic tests are being conducted on human remains of those who may be missing university of virginia student hannah graham. graham disappeared 35 days ago. jericka duncan reports. >> reporter: police on sunday blocked off the road next to the property where the remains were found. they continued to scour the area for any additional evidence. after 35 days of searching, please called 18-year-old hannah graham's parents with the news

that they discovered the body outside charlottesville. police chief timothy longo. >> these are human remains and forensics need to be conducted. nonetheless we wanted to be quick and timely to share that information with the graham family. >> reporter: but even as they asked for patience with the limited information they provided, police changed the case from missing persons to death investigation. they found the remains in a creek bed along with dark tight pants, pants that grahams with in the night she disappeared. >> the mission was to bring closure and we hope that's what we've done. >> graham went missing one night after being out with college friends. police charged 32-year-old jesse matthew with abduction and intent to defile or sexually

assault. he's in custody after being arrested in galveston, texas, last month. >> police say forensic evidence links matthew to another college student who was missing in 2009 and was found dead close to where the remains were discovered. more details will emerge in the coming days. julianna goldman, cbs news, washington. two women were arrested when demonstrating in a protest against the death of michael brown. a fan confronted them for flying the united states flag upside down. police estimate about 20 demonstrators were outside the stadium. brown, a black teenager, was shot and killed by a white police officer. president obama makes his first campaign appearances before the midterm elections. last night at chicago state university the president encouraged his hometown crowd to re-elect illinois's democrat governor pat quinn and senator dick durbin.

earlier the president was in maryland campaigning for anthony brown who is running for governor. and bishops who gathered in the vatican in rome ended divided on the issues of inviting gays and divorced catholics into the church. pope francis moved one of his predecessors closer to sainthood. allen pizzey reports. >> reporter: the mass that elevated pope paul vi to one step short of sainthood wrapped up the meeting that he created. in his homily pope francis quoted paul vi saying they must adapt ways and efforts to the growing needs and times and additions of society. it was a clear illusion of what they fell short yesterday. paul vi was criticized for

allowing contraceptives. he was criticized by liberals and conservatives for saying mass in the vernacular. >> father thomas called him the first real pope. >> folks say he's the first modern pope. he renounced the tiara. >> reporter: on a trip to the u.s. in 1965 he head an outdoor mass at yankee stadium and in a stirring address to ton uttered a fervent cry, no more war. the attributed miracle required for his beatification also has a u.s. connection. an american woman who was urged to have an abortion because the fetus had a severe birth defect, a brain defect said she prayed to pope paul vi instead. francis praised paul vi as someone who could hold fast with far-sightedness and wisdom. in many ways the two popes seem to have been cut from the same cloth.

and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. the new apple pay app starts today. the new iphone 6 and 6 plus has the mobile technology that allows people to pay with their phones. apple has signed up three major credit cards but not that many retailers. also apple will report earnings after the bell. ibm says it's making a major announcement this morning. the company did not say what it would be but bloomberg reports ibm will pay 1.5 billion dollars to globalfoundries to take an unprofitable chip manufacturer offer its hands. ibm will also separately report third quarter earnings after the bell. here on wall street today, investors will be watching for earnings reports from hasbro and halliburton. last week the dow lost 164 points. the s&p dropped 19 and the nasdaq dropped 17 points. at the weekend box office, "fury" was on top in the opening

week. the gritty brad pitt movie was number one in theaters. it earned more than $23 million. police are trying to identify people involved in violence in a college town in new hampshire during the annual pumpkin festival. at least 14 people were arrested and about 20 people were injured in the disturbance near keene state college. mark albert reports on the rioting. >> reporter: young people danced on a flipped over car saturday night while others tore down traffic signs, set fires in the street, and threw bottles and cans near the pumpkin festival in keene, new hampshire. >> the manner of craziness in one day is absurd. >> reporter: the violence came in two ways. the first beginning before dusk. a column of police in riot gear tried to restore order. >> they started shooting rubber bullets at everyone on the side of the street and they tackled one kid in front of a house. >> reporter: after dark the
