it's five years in prison for south african track star oscar pistorius. this morning, the judge read the sentence in the shooting death of pistorius' girlfriend. the former olympian was convicted of culpable homicide for shooting reeva steenkamp last year. he was also given a three-year suspended sentence on a separate charge. three officers led pistorius from the courtroom to a holding cell. and this morning, hospitals in this country have new guidelines for protecting health care workers treating ebola patients. the cdc advice deals with more stringent rules regarding protective gear. susan mcginnis is in washington with details. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. after two nurses who treated thomas duncan in dallas, texas, got infected, the fears, the finger-pointing and the questions have piled up. did they follow the protocols? were the protocols adequate?

were there even protocols? health care workers have been pushing for new standards for their protective gear and late monday they got them. while 260 people in the u.s. are still being monitored by the centers for disease control for ebola symptoms, the agency issued new steps to ensure month more u.s. health care workers contract the virus. cdc director tom frieden announced the revised standards yesterday. among them, health care workers wear protective suits that leave no skin or hair exposed. and use a respirator over their face instead of just goggles. >> one of the critical aspects of these guidelines is a very structured way of doing that, step-by-step, which is supervised and in a way ritualized. >> reporter: the guidelines come after two nurses who treated ebola patient thomas duncan became infected. while it's still unclear how they contracted the virus, health officials say the greatest risk lies in how health care workers remove their protective gear. >> if there's some sort of fluid in the front of that gown, and

you take it off and come in contact with it, well, that can be a very deadly mistake. >> reporter: the cdc last updated its guidelines for treating ebola over the summer but admits the two methods used by the nurses proved inadequate. the agency plans on ramping up the training of health care personnel across the country to help prevent more transmission. and now a trained monitor must supervise workers putting their equipment on and taking it off. now at emory university in atlanta where amber vinson is being treated, one of those nurses, an american doctor who is being treated there for ebola since early september has been released. ashoka mukpo the photo journal being treated in nebraska, could be released by month's end. anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis, thank you for the update. indiana police say a convicted sex offender confessed to at least seven murders and hinted there may be more. victims' bodies were found in northwest indiana. darren vann is charged in one death but the investigation has just begun.

brad edwards reports. >> reporter: police searched the gary, indiana, home of 43-year-old darren vann who could be responsible for at least seven deaths, potentially more, dating back to the '90s. authorities say vann met the 19-year-old escort afrikka hardy at this motel in hammond, indiana, on friday. after a co-worker failed to reach hardy by cell phone she and a friend arrived to discover her body. hardy had been strangled. police tracked down vann using a cell phone number on file at the escort service and arrested him at his home. >> during a subsequent interrogation of mr. vann, he admitted his involvement in the hammond incident and had expressed an interest in notifying police of other criminal incidents he was involved with. >> reporter: vann told police of six other bodies and where to find them. marvin clinton was engaged to another alleged victim who disappeared in january. >> how she met this guy, i don't know. it's a mystery to me.

>> are you heartbroken? >> i'm devastated, really. >> reporter: authorities aren't saying how the other woman died, but they are saying vann told them there may be more victims. potentially dating back decades. >> it could go back as far as 20 years, based on some statements we have. >> reporter: vann was convicted of sexual assault in texas seven years ago. he's already charged with hardy's murder. charges for the other six women are expected this week. brad edwards for cbs news, gary, indiana. pennsylvania police say there's been another reported sighting of eric frein. the suspect in the deadly police barracks shooting. a police officer believes he spotted frein yesterday near a post office in the pocono mountains. frein has been on the run since the police barracks shooting september 12th. the search has centered in the woods near his parents' home. frein is a self-taught survivalist believed to be

targeting police. and the suspect in the disappearance of a university of virginia student is charged with the rape and abduction of a washington, d.c. woman back in 2005. jesse matthew is being held in charlottesville, virginia, on charges related to the disappearance of hannah graham. she was last seen september 13. human remains found over the weekend are believed to be graham's. but so far, a positive identification has not been made. and the latest retailer to be the possible victim of a credit card data breach is staples. a company spokesman said staples has contacted law enforcement officials. the office supply company says it's working to resolve the issue but did not offer any more details. it's reported the breach involves stores in the northeastern united states. and the fashion world is mourning the loss of oscar de la renta. for more than four decades, the designer was known for sending celebrities and first ladies alike into the public eye in high style. >> reporter: for years, his name

rolled off the tongues of hollywood a-listers who walked the red carpet. de la renta designs were oscar stars in their own right. sandra bullock, penelope cruz. jennifer hudson took home her oscar while wearing oscar. de la renta was also a favorite of first ladies, including nancy reagan. hillary clinton donned a gold de la renta gown for bill clinton's second inauguration. for laura bush it was shimmering blue in 2005. de la renta also designed a wedding dress worn by former first daughter jenna bush. and his most recent design, the white gown worn by amal alamuddin at her star-studded wedding to george clooney. born in the dominican republican, de la renta became a fashion fixture in the 1960s, after coming to the u.s., at the time when paris and milan were capitals of couture, de la renta is credited as putting new york

safety groups say as many as 25 million vehicles may be affected. jeff glor reports. >> reporter: the air bags in question are made by takata, and they've been subject to a spiraling series of recalls that this year reached more than 11 million. the problem, the air bags can explode, sending metal shrapnel flying through the vehicle. we spoke to stephanie erdman who barely survived. >> instant blindness on my right side followed by gushing blood. it was terrifying. i thought i was going to bleed out at first. >> reporter: four deaths may be linked to the defect. the latest, a 51-year-old woman in orlando who was driving a 2001 honda accord. this is the 911 call. >> where is he bleeding from? can you tell? >> it looks like it's coming from the right side of her neck. >> right side of her neck. >> reporter: that followed a death in california, an 18-year-old in oklahoma, and a mother of three in virginia.

documents filed with the national highway traffic safety administration or nhtsa, show the exploding air bags in 2004. the recalls didn't start until 2008. nine carmakers are now involved, including the latest recall of more than 50,000 air bags in toyota vehicles. as in previous recalls, the fixes will only be made in warm weather climates where takata believes the high humidity makes the explosion more likely. clarence ditmer. why not recall the vehicles in every single state? >> money. >> reporter: and why does nhtsa accept that? >> it's a frustration. how in the world can you approve a geographic recall that doesn't include the two states that people have been killed? recognize that one incident is one too many.

apple with the iphone. the company sold more than 39 million iphones in the last quarter that is 16% more than a year ago. by contrast, ipad sales were down 13%. it follows an industry-wide decline in tablet sales. well, here on wall street today, investors were watching earnings reports as well as existing home sales in september. dow gained 19 points monday. the s&p 500 was up 17. the nasdaq rose 57 points. two more deaths are now being attributed to the defective general motors ignition switches. at least 29 people are confirmed to have died in crashes involving the gm cars with faulty parts. according to the victims compensation fund. the automaker recalled more than 2 million vehicles to replace those ignition switches. despite lower fuel costs, anxiety over ebola and the upcoming holiday season, some airlines are raising fares. delta air lines raised round

a mother in florida wants to stop action figures from the "breaking bad" tv show from being sold to children. she started a petition to remove the walter white dolls from toys "r" us stores because she claims they glorify drugs. >> knowing that both of the items that one needs to make meth, i just think that it's wrong. it's about drugs. and are in a children's toy store. >> "breaking bad" star bryan cranston tweeted "florida mom petitions against toys "r" us over "breaking bad" action afigures, i'm so mad, i'm burning my florida mom action figure in protest." and the pittsburgh steelers needed a little more than a minute to turn their game around. trailing by 10 points just before halftime, the steelers score three times in less than 1:30.

the united states handled isis positions in iraq and syria on monday. american airplanes also dropped supplies to kurdish groups. they're in a desperate fight for isis for control of the syrian border town of kobani. holly williams crossed that border where she met an american volunteer who has joined the fight. >> reporter: in northeastern syria, kurdish soldiers have been fighting a brutal war against isis for over a year, and they're still holding the lines. we drove into syria escorted by kurdish fighters to meet one of their number. an american volunteer from meridian, mississippi.
