the government expands its warning over potentially dangerous air bags in millions of cars, but drivers are having trouble finding out if their vehicle is affected. authorities are investigating three teenage girls from colorado who may have been trying to join isis militants in syria. and he was the man who helped bring down a presidency. we'll look back at the life of ben bradlee, the former "washington post" editor who led the way on watergate. and from fiction to reality, designers show off a flying skateboard. until now only seen in a movie about the future. captioning funded by cbs

this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, october 22nd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning millions of drivers are wondering if a feature designed to keep them safe in their cars is actually putting them in danger, and they're not getting much help from the government agency whose job it is to protect them. last night the national highway traffic safety administration or nhtsa is warnin inwarning. but drivers are not getting their questions answered. the new warning covers more than 6 million vehicles in the united states. the problem for many is finding out if their car is affected. at last check a website set up to check your vehicle information is not working.

last night the agency updated its list of affected vehicles, however, on its website that still appears to contain mistakes. on monday they issued a consumer advisory urging drivers with takata air bags take immediate action. they were not getting their vehicles fixed. at least four people have been killed and more than 30 injured by exploding takata air bags. however, millions of cars are not scheduled to be fixed. the company believed high humidity makes explosion more likely. however, cbs news has learned of incidents of exploding air bags outside of those areas including indiana, ohio, illinois, and maryland. they're looking to track down the full scope of this problem. >> kris van cleave here in new york. thank you very much, kris.

>> you can see the full and updated list on our website, cbsnews.com. law enforcement officials are looking at computers and talking to friends of three teenaged girls. they were picked up in germany when they were suspected of maybe trying to join isis. >> reporter: the teens were able to board a plane that took them from denver to frankfurt, germany. but no further. there they were detained by the fbi after the u.s. consulate was notified they were headed that way. he spoke with friends of the girls' parents. >> i was shocked. we thought that the boys were easy targets. >> reporter: there were two so i mali and one sudanese-american teens, about 16 years old. they were detained in frankfurt

and head to turkey. they apparently told family and officials they were going to study in turkey. instead they were going to cross and fight with isis. >> have a brainwashing and go to another place and somebody give them bad idea. >> earlier this year shannon conley was convicted of conspiring to aid isis after meeting them online. >> now, the pentagon says that the military campaign against isis and iraq has cost $424 million. that's about $7.6 million a day since the bombing campaign began august 8th. and that includes the cost for aerial refueling and missions as well as 1,400 troops in iraq. and this morning a passenger

who flew into newark's liberty airport is being tested for ebola. the passenger reportedly arrived on a flight from africa yesterday and had a fever. newark is one of five airports they must pass through. meantime there's good news for an american cameraman who is being treated for ebola. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on his recovery. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. ashuko mukpo who is the free lan photographer who contracted ebola in africa is recovering. he's expressing huge relief. and one of the nurses who contracted ebola in dallas is c restrictions for travelers go into effect.

ashoka mukpo tested for the deadly ebola virus prompting him to tweet the message i'm so lucky. the 33-year-old cameraman was admitted to the bio containment facility a little more than two weeks ago after he became sick in beer yliberia. one of the two nurses in the u.s. jeff got some good news as well. dook tors treating knee fa fam at the national institutes of health upgraded her condition from fair to good. today president obama meets with his newly appointed ebola czar, ron klain, designed to coordinate a federal response. they have come under criticism for lacking in an aggressive response to the virus. >> there have been some shortcomings in the response and the president has been pressing on his team for quite some time now to ensure that our response

lives up to the high standards that he has set for his team in ations of the american people. must now enter through one of five airports where travelers will have their temperatures checked for signs of a fever that may indicate ebola infection. now, as for west africa, a top official says he's confident the epidemic can be contained within four to six months. the u.n. says out of 19,000 nurses that will be needed, only a fraction have been sent so far. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. villafranca reports he

the san francisco giants ran way with the first game of the world series. hunter pence homers in first inning and the giants never look back winning 7-1. game two is tonight. and it's being called a major medical breakthrough. a paralyzed man is now able to walk again thanks to a pioneering cell transplant. alphonso van marsh reports. >> he's walking again four years after a knife attack left him paralyzed. he said when the feeling comes back it's like learning to walk again. doctors in poland took cells
