africa. and october heat. the benches clear during game 2 of the world series. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, october 23rd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in canada where a second terror attack in three days has struck the heart of the canadian government. this morning we're learning more about the lone gunman who opened fire on parliament hill in ottawa. he was a canadian citizen with a criminal record who recently converted to islam. the suspect gunned down an honor guard at point blank range before he was killed by a heroic government official. kris van cleave is in ottawa with more. kris, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. people across this country are expressing anger, shock, and sadness about what happened here yesterday, and many are asking

the same question. how did a gunman get inside the parliament building. just hours after the attack on a soldier standing guard at canada's national war memorial in ottawa, the prime minister called the violence an act of terror. >> we will not be intimidated. canada will not be intimidated. in fact, this will lead us to strengthen our resolve and redouble our effort. >> reporter: on wednesday a masked gunman shot and killed a soldier at close range. politicians locked themselves in meeting rooms. the gunman was confronted and killed by canada's sergeant-at-arms. the president spoke with the prime minister last night. >> i pledge as always to make sure our national security teams are coordinated very closely. >> reporter: parts of parliament hill including memorial hill are

closed by police as the investigation into the attack continues. it's the second deadly attack against military servicemembers in canada in just three days raising questions that the violence is connected to canada joining the fight against the islamic state in syria. >> canada officials are very worried that this movement is motivates others not only to come and fight in places like iraq and syria, but echoing the calls from al qaeda to attack in place. >> reporter: officials say they'll continue to work with other officials around the world to fight terror. we've learned a little bit more about the suspect. his birth name is michael joseph paul. he was born in quebec and recently converted to islam. he does have a history of run-ins with police and a history of drug addiction. now, he was shot and killed by the sergeant-at-arms. a man named kevin vickers, 57 years old, spent nearly 30 years as a royal canadian mounted policeman before coming the head of security at the parliament house.

he's being credited with saving lives for taking that action, shooting and killing the suspect. anne-marie? >> all right. kris van cleave in ottawa. thank you, kris. hours after the attack in ottawa, a maryland man was arrested after he jumped the white house funs. unlike the security breach last month, the suspect was not armed and was immediately apprehended by the secret service. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: fox news cameras caught a man trying to fight off dogs. he jumped the fence but agents subdued and arrested him. he's identified from bel air, maryland. the white house was put on lockdown wednesday night as a precaution. the secret service recently added new fences and posted dagsal agent s around the fence. that came after a serious breach last september. >> gonzalez made it all the way into the east room with a knife before he was stopped. that breach was the tipping point for former secret service

chief julia pierson. she resigned and joe clancy was tapped as interim director. gonzalez pleaded not guilty of charges to unlawfully entering a government building while carrying a weapon. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. a seattle area nurse is being monitored for ebola this morning. health officials are saying she showed no signs of the disease but recently returned from africa where she treated patients. meanwhile the governor has quarantined six others who returned from west africa. starting next week, travelers from three west african nations affected by the ebola outbreak will be monitored for symptoms. they will check in with health officials and have their temperature taken twice a day for 21 days. susan mcginnis has more on the government's response and the update on two americans infected

with ebola. >> when i first came in, dr. smith came in, i looked up and said, am i going to make it. he goes, we don't know a whole lot about this. >> reporter: high spirits for nbc cameraman ashoka mukpo. on wednesday he left the nebraska medical center free of ebola. he's heading home to rhode island after receiving an experimental drug to treat the disease. >> thanks a lot, doc. >> reporter: infected nurse amber vinson is also smiling. she snapped this selfie after being transferred. her family says the doctors no longer detect the virus in her body. she and nina pham contracted the disease while treating thomas eric duncan at texas health presbyterian hospital in dallas. president obama discussed the government's efforts to contain the disease after meeting with

ron klain, his new point man on ebola. klain will be in charge of getting government agencies to work more efficiently in case any new ebola cases arise. >> public health and infrastructure systems that we're now putting in place across the board around the country should give the american people the confidence that we're going to be in a position to deal with any additional cases of ebola. >> the president added he is cautiously optimistic about the ebola situation in the u.s. but a new "associated press" poll finds that nearly half of americans are very or extremely concerned about a widespread outbreak. nine out of ten think there should be more screening procedures. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. this morning we're watching two storm systems, one in the northwest and one in the northeast. both are threatening heavy rain and possible flooding. a nor'easter roared up thecoast on wednesday. it brought heavy rains, high winds and surf. this morning flood watches are

posted in massachusetts, new hampshire, and maine. and in oregon, high winds and pounding rain hit the portland area. wind gusts reached 66 miles per hour. the airport saw 1.8 inches of rain, breaking the record for the day. lawyers for four former blackwater security guards who were found guilty of shooting more than 30 iraqis back in 2007 say they will appeal. the incident sparked an international uproar. 14 iraqis were killed and 17 others wounded by the private guards hired to protect american diplomats in baghdad. the guards claimed self-defense. following an 11-week trial, a federal jury found one guard guilty of first-degree murder. three others were found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. coming up on the "morning news," an academic scandal at unc said to affect thousands of students. and a commissioner called to speak on behalf of ray rice's

an accident is under investigation at the airport in the twin cities. two planes clipped wings on the tarmac at minneapolis/st. paul airport last night. it involved a delta air lines jet and a. compass airlines plane. there were no injuries. reports say an arbitrator ruled that goodell must give testimony next month and rice's appeal from rice's indefinite suspension by the nfl. the suspension came after a public release of a video showing the running back hitting his fiancee in an elevator. and a scandal at a university. an investigation of academic fraud at the university of north carolina found that thousands of students, half of them athletes. mark strassmann reports they got credit for classes that did not exist. >> there you have it. north carolina is the 1993 national championships. >> reporter: in 1993 when the university of north carolina's

a surprise for shoppers at a drugstore in ashland, oregon. a bear cub was wandering down an aisle. earlier it was found at a hotel. police eventually scooped up the cub in a shopping basket and turned it over to wildlife officials. the bear was not hurt but it will spend the next few months in a rehab center before it's released back into the wild. and people in reno, nevada, are becoming all too familiar with bear encounters. as carter evans reports, residents are concerned the bears are getting bolder. >> reporter: police are after a prowler in this reno neighborhood and carl lackey

knows just how to track him down. >> he looked like a 300-pounder or 400 pounder. >> that's a big bear. >> it is. >> reporter: lackey is a bear biologist for the department of national wildlife. they've tagged nearly 100 black bear. that's a record. most were captured during an unusual territory. the extreme drought has not only dried up rivers but it's depleted the bear's natural food sources, forcing them farther into urban communities to feed. does this look like something a bear would do? >> yeah. it's fairly typical, bear sushi. >> reporter: they need to eat up to 30,000 calories a day, the equivalent of more than 100 cheeseburgers. >> there's better habitat in these neighborhoods than what they can find in the forest. everybody's got fruit trees, a lot urban ponds. a food buffet for the bear.
