this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, october 29th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there has been a major setback in this country's commercial space flight effort. an unmanned supply rocket headed to the international space station skbloeded just after lift-off. the an ttares rocket exploded jt after it took off. cbs's bill harwood watched in shock as the rocket came crashing back to its launchpad on the coast of v. >> oh, my goodness. oh, my goodness. it looks like the rocket has suffered a catastrophic launch moments after its launch. it's fallenn back on its launch.

susan mcginnis is on wallops island. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. officials say they saw no hint of trouble until the actual explosion above the flight complex last night. the investigation is already well under way into what went wrong. >> and we have lift-off. >> reporter: seconds after blasting off from the launchpad on the island in virginia, the unmanned rocket bound for the international space station burst into flames. the flight was over in just 15 seconds. a spectacular fireball and exploding debris rained down on the launchpad. no one was kill or injured in the catastrophic launch but more than 5,000 pounds of cargo and supplies headed to the international space station are gone. >> we do want to express our dis appointment that we were not able to fill our obligation to the international space station program and deliver this load of

car doe. >> investigators will begin combing through the debris at dawn. residents on the island here of virginia's coast are told to contact nasa if they come acros whether that was the engines built in russia or some other support system is not yet known. >> nasa has used other companies to supply the stace space station since it retired its fleet in 2011. the mission says iss has adequate supplies to last until at least next spring. now, coincidentally, the russian space agency already had a flight, a rocket flight headed for tomorrow for the international space station to bring supplies to the astronauts that are stationed there. meanwhile the company, orbital science says it will be back here investigating the scene here and they say they will

availability for some white house employees. the white house is not commenting on a "washington post" report that the russians are behind the security breach. and this morning there is increased security at u.s. government buildings. the ramped up security measures come following recent attacks in canada and continuing threats against this country. the chief of homeland security says the reasons for the actions are self-evident. wendy gillette is here in new york with the details. wendy, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the homeland security department says the increased security at some federal government buildings at washington and other major american cities is only a precautionary step. the announcement came from homeland security secretary jeh johnson. johnson declined to reveal which buildings fall under this tightened security. he also won't say exactly what measures are being taken. but he says they'll vary depending on the location. the announcement comes as the west faces the possibility of terrorist plots launched by

terrorists isis. it follows last week's attack in ottawa when a gunman fatally shot a gunman at the war memorial and stormed parliament. johnson to control them. they have launched dozens of air strikes against the militants. and former florida governor jeb bush a potential presidential candidate is criticizing president obama's initial handling of the ebola crisis as incompetent. he said he gave rise to unneeded fears to the american public about the virus. this afternoon the president will talk about the fight

against ebola in a white house speech. meanwhile the second of two nurses infected with the virus is home. craig boswell is home. >> reporter: dallas nurse amber vinson returned home tuesday after undergoing successive treatment in atlanta. she spoke with reporters. >> while this is a day of celebration and gratitude i ask that we not lose focus on the thousands of families who continue to labor under the burden of this disease in west africa. >> reporter: vinson is one of two nurses to contract the virus after treating thomas air duncan who died of the disease. the other nina pham was treated at the national institutes of health and released last week. the president says the mandatory quarantine some states are enforcing on health workers could have a chilling effect. >> we don't want to discourage our health care workers from going to the front lines and
