pair of tightrope walks between a pair of skyscrapers. captioning funded by cbs for monday, november 3rd, 2014. this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, november 3rd, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the decision of aid to dying is being rekindled for a 29-year-old woman determined to take her own life. we learned your night that brittney maynard, the terminal cancer patient who was the face of the right to die-movement, chose to take a lethal dose of a drug ore the weekend. >> i'll die upstairs in my bedroom that i share with my husband, with my mother and my husband by my side and pass peacefully with the music that i like in the background. >> that is how brittney maynard died on saturday. according to a statement from compassion and choices, a right to die advocacy group, maynard

passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. last month she went public with her battle against brain cancer and her decision to die on her own terms. >> i can't even tell you the amount of relief it provides me to know that i don't have to die the way that it's been described to me that my brain tumor would take me. >> maynard and her husband moved from california to oregon, one of five states allowing doctors to prescribe a lethal medication. last week after returning from a trip to the grand canyon she said she was considering postponing her suicide but her condition worsened. according to compassion and choices, maynard was suv erring from longer and more frequent seizures, severe pain, and stroke-like symptoms. >> so when november 2nd comes along and i pass, i hope my family is still proud of me in the choices i made. >> some medical ethics and religious groups are opposed to her decision. >> life is always precious, life always has meaning, life always has value, no matter what condition we find ourselves in.

>> well, maynard left a final message thanking her friends and family and saying, quote, it is people who pause to appreciate life and give thanks who are happiest. if we change our thoughts, we change our world. love and peace to you all. federal investigators looking into the fatal crash of the virgin galactic spaceship say the ship broke apart after a bre braking device was prematurely deployed. the feathering system slows the trip down. during friday's flight the tail boons moved before they should have. >> about nine seconds after the engine ignited the telemetry told us that the feather parameters changed from locked to unlocked. >> the co-pilot who was killed unlocked the feather but it should have not moved until given a second command. the pilot survived. investigators say it's still not

clear what caused the crash, and the investigation will take months. and now to the weather. and the first widespread bite of winter-like cold. a cold front pushed temperatures into the 30s over parts of the east. a warming trend is expected, but this morning freeze warnings are posted from florida to pennsylvania. it's noted in california yesterday the state was under a winter storm warning. some areas got 5 inches. it also snowed in columbia, south carolina. the earliest snowfall there in 100 years. the unexpected snow backed up traffic for hours. up to a foot of snow fell in maine. more than 100,000 customers lost power in the central and southern part of the state. the power company says it will take time to restore service in some areas. winter is still officially seven weeks away. it is the last campaign push before tomorrow's midterm elections. republicans are confident they'll win the six seats they need to gain control of the senate.

polls indicate a gop surge in several states. president obama made his final campaign swings yesterday hoping to rally the democratic faithful. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. democrats are battling to defend their senate majority. republicans are sounding more and more confident they can take those seats away from them and grab that majority back. the president was out this weekend trying to help the democrats, but some of them may have preferred he stay at home. it's the last day of campaigning before voters take to the polls. president obama made his final campaign swing through pennsylvania sunday for democratic hopeful tom wolf. >> i've got a simple message. we've got to vote. >> it was a different reaction in connecticut where the president was interrupted by people protesting his immigration policies. >> i just want to say because we now have like three folks, i am

sympathetic to those who are concerned about immigration. >> president obama has been largely absent from the campaign trail this season. some incumbent democrats have been distancing themselves from the president who now has one of the lowest approval ratings of his presidency. >> as the president said his policies are on the ballot this year, and, frankly, this is judgment on the obama administration. >> the focus of these midterms is control of congress. the gop needs to take six seats away from democrats to retake control of the senate. that doesn't mean democrats won't put up a fight. >> going into election day, the advantages we have are superior to the ones republicans have. >> on tuesday parties will be keeping an eye on nine key battleground states where races are close. now, the cbs battleground tracker does show that republicans have been poised to take control of the senate. large percentages of key groups that typically favor democrats, young voters and minority voters are expected to sit this one

out, anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. you can watch tuesday night election coverage begins tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. eastern, 9:00 central. on his final stop at his campaign swing in philadelphia, president obama had to switch planes. the white house says there was a minor mechanical problem with the flap on the aircraft. the president returned to washington last night. now, kaci hickox, the nurse who fought maine's quarantine for health care workers who treated ebola patients, said she had no choice but to fight the quarantine. the judge ruled she can go out wherever she likes, but hickox said she'll temper her travel. >> i understand the community has been through a lot in the past week and that i do apologize to them for that. i will not go into town into crowded public places. you know, i have had a few friends come visit me in my home and that's absolutely fantastic. >> hickox says she was fighting for the rights of other health

care workers. her 21-day incubation period ends november 10th. billionaire bill gates wants to end malaria in his lifetime. the microsoft co-founder said he'll increase his donations to fight the disease to more than $200 million a year. malaria kills over 600 thousand a year, most of them children in africa. and the united nations says action is needed now on the climate change. greenhouse emissions need to drop to zero this century. the report says climate change is caused by humans burning fossil fuels. reducing emissions is the best chance for the world to keep rising temperatures in check. the no-fly zone put into place over ferguson after the killing of michael brown was done to keep television news helicopters away. protests exploded in ferguson days after brown's shooting by a white police officer. audio recordings obtained by the "associated press" shows the faa

the lava flow on hawaii's big island has slowed down, at least for now. volcano monitors say that rain reduced the smoke from the hot lava. it stalled about 480 feet from the main road to the village of a thousand people. 50 homes are on a letter to evacuate if the lava flow gets any closer. a bahamas cruise turned into a halloween nightmare. the cruise ship was disabled friday when it hit something in the water. almost a thousand passengers, many of them americans, were evacuated from the ship and taken to resort hotels in the bahamas. >> the lights went out, we were all eating, it was total chaos, and no one was able to know what was going on. >> we were stranded on an island for two days with no information, no food for 24 hours. >> well, the ship was leaning to one side when it returned to port in the bahamas.

tll were no reports of injuries. >> on the "cbs moneywatch" gas prices begin to tank and a business own for business today. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. gas prices are at a four-year low. aaa reports that the price at the pump dropped 33 cents in october. the average price for regular gas is now at $2.99 per gallon. that's due to lower crude oil prices as well as global demand and higher american production. here on wall street today investors will watch for october auto sales and sales after home building. after a volatile month the stocks are at an all-time high. dow gained 347. the s&p 500 is also at a record after adding 45 points in october. and the dmakz ganasdaq gained 1s over the course of the month.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports the balance of power in the afc has shifted from denver to new england. sunday's matchup between the broncos and patriots featuring the two best teams in the conference and key quarterbacks, peyton manning and tom brady. thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from brady. he would throw two more t.d.s in the second half as the patriots win, 43-21. new england now holds the best record in the conference of 7-2. denver falls to 6-2. and another quarterback record fell in pittsburgh. steelers' q.b. ben

roethlisberger remains on fire throwing six t.d. passes for a second consecutive week. he's the second to throw 12 touchdowns over a two-game stretch. roethlisberger passed for 340 yards as pittsburgh beat the baltimore ravens, 43-23. kenya's runners continue to dominate the new york city marathon. fighting 30-mile-an-hour winds wilson kipsang won with an unofficial time of 2:10.59. it's his third marathon win in just over 13 months. and countrywoman mary keitana was the women's marathon winner. and jimmie johnson won the nascar race, but sunday's race ended in a bit of a brawl. jeff gordon spun out in the last lap after hitting a car driven by keselowski. he was very angry and confronted keselowski on pit row. punches were thrown with nas carr officials and crew members all caught in the middle. both drivers face fines. what a mess.

in basketball every player is up against the clock but none more so than one brave woman. steve hartman watched her in action. >> reporter: sunday afternoon in cincinnati, ohio, the mount st. joseph university women's basketball team took to the floor in their season opener. all eyes on starting forward who may just be the most devoted player this game has ever seen. >> number 22, lauren hill. >> reporter: 19-year-old freshman lauren hill was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer about a year ago, and from that moment to this, her main goal has been to play in

just one college basketball game. >> i wanted to wear the shoes and wear that jersey and feel like a superhero again because that's how i feel when i put on the jersey and that number. >> reporter: for weeks lauren has been waiting for and working for that first game. since practice began last month, she's been training with her team, getting up at 5:30 a.m., fighting back unimaginable headaches in utter defiance of her cancer. >> when i'm not there, i feel like i'm letting people down. >> reporter: lauren has weeks to live at best, and here she is worried about letting other people down. why does that matter to you? >> because i love them. they're like my family and they keep me going. they make me see positives. >> reporter: but it took more than will to get lauren to this moment. because time was so short, the ncaa allowed mount st. joseph to move their season opener up two weeks. they also had to change the venue to accommodate all the
