this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, novemr 7 this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, november 7th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, it is reported this morning that the japanese air bag manufacturer takata knew its air bags were dangerous ten years ago but covered up the results of secret tests. two former takata employees told "the new york times" the testing was stopped after three months and the evidence destroyed. don champion is here in new york with more. don, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. that was four years before takata told federal regulators it first tested its air bags. the faulty air bags have been tied to four deaths and forced a recall of more than 14 million cars worldwide. the secret tests were conducted at takata's facility in michigan on weekends and holidays. the defects can force the air bags to deploy with too much

shards caution pieces of metal to go into passengers. last night it responded to the report saying it raised additional concerns about takata's handling of the air bag issues and is one of the reasons it's compelling them to produce documents and answer questions under oath. last night takata's biggest customer honda is expanding its recall. the vehicles affected were manufactured between 2003 and 2005 including the popular accord, civic, and crv. they were sold or registered in 13 high-humidity states. takata says humidity hurts the stability of the airbags. employees say they were ordered to destroy all evidence of the test a decade ago. takata's air bags are blamed for at least 139 injuries. a honda spokesperson calls these serious allegations and wants to know if any of the employees knew about the test. a takata spokesperson declined

to reply. anne-marie? >> thank you. now to the weather, the headline, it's going get cold. it is the return of the polar vortex, the numbing cold that up north made winter so miss irable last year for so many. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says it's triggering the weather. >> at one point we were tracking a typhoon, a super typhoon named nuri. it doesn't look like much but what was a beautiful typhoon is now weakening. however a lot of the moisture is moving to the north. that's where it hits the jet stream and then it explodes over the weekend. we'll have the giant storm system in the state. 50-foot-tall waves, weekend gusts of hurricane strength, and we'll have an impact on our weather in the united states. it helps to buckle the jetstream. a huge ridge over the west. it will bring warm and dry

weather to. the east of that a huge dip in the jet stream. it's going to take over all of the united states with some of the coldest and a taste of winter for a lot of folks. it really starts on monday. by tuesday, lots of highs in the 20s and 30s. you'll feel it first in the front rage of the plains. by the end of the week, the entire eastern united states with a feeling of winter, and, yes, snow will be coming along with this. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. president obama reached out to iran's supreme leader in a secret letter. the president urged ayatollah ali khamenei to negotiate a deal to end its nuclear weapons program in exchange for an end to western sanctions. the deadline for negotiations now under way is november 24th. iran, a shiite muslim nation is also fighting isis. jo and a u.s. air strike linking to syria appears to have killed a top bombmaker. david drugeon is said to be a french militant and one of the

an army national guard helicopter crashed last night in idaho killing two crew members. the apache chopper went down during a training mission near boise international airport. a spokesperson cop firmed the deaths but did not release any of the details of the two pilots. the cause of the crash is being investigated. and the former navy s.e.a.l. who claims he killed osama bin laden has gone public. robert o'neill spoke at a veterans event in tennessee thursday. he told the "washington post" he fired the shots that hit bin laden in the forehead during the

raid in pakistan in 2011. o'neill talks to the vets about the decision he made to join the s.e.a.l.s. >> september 11th, 2001, our country was attacked obviously. i felt like everyone in the room. i wanted to fight the enemy, get over to afghanistan. >> o'neill faces criticism from some colleagues who says the s.e.a.l.s are not supposed to talk about their missions. two years ago a fellow s.e.a.l. wrote a book describing the raid that killed osama bin laden. police say the woman who was kidnapped from philadelphia last weekend used her wits to help police find her. technology also helped officers track down her suspended kidnapper and bring her home. >> reporter: the violent abduction of carlesha freeland-gaither helped the police track her down. police say as the 22 -year-old nursing assistant was being forced into a car, she left her cell phone behind so police would immediately know who was missing.

>> she left it there for us to find. >> reporter: she also kicked out one of the car's windows. police say barnes drove her to maryland where she gave him the p.i.n. number to use her atm card. that signaling the police. it was captured on video. >> we corroborated on video that was his vehicle he was allegedly driving. >> another officer recognized the used car dealer name on barnes' car and knew it was one that often puts gps tracking systems in cars of customers with bad credit. they found the car in this jessup, maryland, parking lot wednesday. >> there was a plastic bag on the passenger side window, which we knew fit the vehicle of the car that was involved in the abduction. >> he was returned to virginia where he faces charging for abducting a 16-year-old. freeland-gaither is home with her family. kris van cleave, cbs news, new york.

jill wagner from the new york stock exchange is here with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning. home depot says the data breach is worse than what they thought. they stole 53 million e-mail addresses. that's in addition to the breach of the 53 million debit cards in september. but the hackers didn't get passwords or other personal information. here on wall street today the investors are waiting for the jobs report. the dow gained 69 points thursday for a second record high. the s&p 500 was also up. the nasdaq rose 17 points. for the holiday season, the postal service is adding sunday deliveries. the seven major cities will run through the 17th through christmas day. the post office expects a 12% increase this year because of online retailers shipping more holiday packages. the skies will be crowded with airline passengers this thanksgiving weekend. 24.6 million passengers are expected to fly from november

21st through december 2nd. that's up 1.5% from last year. the busiest day is expected to be sunday, november 30th, with 2.6 million people in the air. and the present and future are looking bright for the walt disney company. revenue from the guardians of the galaxy helped push the disney division revenue up 18% last quarter and the company as a whole reported net income up 8%. disney also announced the first of its new "star wars" move movies will be up next year. the cast includes the original actors and the new film brings back another hugely popular franchise. disney pixar says buzz lightyear and sheriff woody will be back in theaters. "toy story 4" will renew the animated series with the film

,,,, here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. minnesota vikings running back adrian peterson could still be suspended from the nfl over his child abuse case. the league is reviewing the case under its personal conduct policy. peterson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on tuesday and will avoid jail time.

he's currently on paid leave from the team. on thursday nike ended its relationship with peterson. and ray rice is awaiting a former federal judge's decision on whether to reinstate him to the nfl. rice and his wife testified on the final day of an arbitration hearing. rice is arguing that the league overstepped its authority by making the suspension indefinite after initially giving him a two-game suspension for attacking his then fiancee in an elevator. and the biggest star in thursday night's game between the cincinnati bengals and the cleveland browns was not a player at all. it was 4-year-old leah still. she is the daughter of cincinnati's devon still. last night she saw her daddy play for the first time. she flew from cincinnati to philadelphia where she's been treated for cancer. between the first and second quarter, she was on the field as the bengals presented a $1.3 million check for cancer research. >> seeing my daughter on the field as they presented this check, it definitely was a joy

six people were safely rescued from a burning boat near the florida keys. a passing boat got the people off the 50-foot catamaran on thursday. the coast guard fought the fire for more than five hours. there were about 400 gallons of high octane fuel aboard the boat making the fire very difficult to put out. a television news cameraman in australia found himself part of a story when a criminal suspect approached him. the encounter started peacefully but soon turned violent. chris van clear has the dramatic vid video. >> reporter: with his hands covered in blood, the man attacked a woman in australia. he was going to surrender.

the photographer called police twice. during the 30 minutes it took to respond, the suspect pulled a gun. hi attempted a carjacking adding to his crime spree. >> don't be silly, don't be silly. >> he was more than willing to go quietly but then something triggered in his mind that now i'll do this in a big way. >> reporter: a camera mounded in the news car captured the crash that ended this chase. the suv slammed into a gas tank as the police moved in on the suspect. >> i don't think he had a weapon at the time but he moved over to the gas puddles and anything could have happened from there. you could hear gas leaking and he walked up to me purposefully, looked me in the eyes and asked me for a cigarette lighter. >> reporter: officers took him into custody and the photographer got a story unlike anything he's ever covered in his 34 years on the job.

>> for a cameraman it's the stuff you sort of dream of, i guess. so, yeah, i'm fine. i'm fine. i just need a big drink. >> reporter: and that armed man might have been better off just surrendering to the news. he's now facing a host of charges including attempted murder and armed robbery. kris van cleave, new york. a monster sighting in cape coral, florida. a giant alligator was caught on video casually strolling through a yard on wednesday. the woman who took the video said the gator emerged from some trees near a canal. >> i ran and i dropped, and then i got back up and started walking slow. >> that looks like a healthy full grown gator and he looked like he had a full bully. well, the wildlife official estimates the alligator was about 15 years old. people say they had never seen an alligator like that before and they were told to keep their pets inside. i bet a little shih tzu would make a little snack for him.
