chicago bes. this is the "cbs morning news" for monlds, november 10th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. winter is not set to arrive for more than a month, but today much of the country will start getting hit with bitterly cold temperatures, and some parting will start seeing heavy snow. it's already snowing in north dakota. a massive storm is being pushed by the remnants of a major pacific typhoon. winter storm watches and warnings are posted from idaho to michigan. in minnesota, they're getting ready for the snow. folks in minneapolis could get a foot with below freezing temperatures that could last for days. some parts of the country could see single-digit temperatures and meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the cold weather is moving south. well, a lot of cold air is working its way across the border across the arctic and canadand a it's starting to work its way deeper toward the south.

as we head toward the middle of the week, not just the rockies and the plains but deep down across parts of the ohio valley and well into south tsx. we'll look at temperatures as much as 40 degrees below normal. as we head toward friday will end up being florida, a little cooldown but certainly not what the rest of us are expecting. wednesday's highs as we head toward the midweek and cold air is really entrenched. single digits expected across wyoming including shy yen. teens in denver. temperatures in the high 20s in the twin cities. when you talk low temperatures by thursday morning, look at this map. it looks like the middle of winter. 20 in nash ville and little rock. freezing mark in atlanta. freezing digits and subzero numbers across the northern plains. snow coming along with this. a big band of the snow will continue its way eastward right into the twin cities into wisconsin around rhinelander, monday, monday night into tuesday morning. this will have a big impact on

air travel and road travel. in terms of totals, many seeing a foot. to the east, we could see one foot or up to 14-inch snowfall totals. winter coming very early and this pattern is going nowhere. i'm eric fish eric meteorologist for cbs news. president obama is in beijing, part of a three-nation tour to center on trade. the president announced a major deal to extend short-term deals between the u.s. and china this morning as the asia-pacific economic cooperation forum, but his asian counterparts are wary of his ability to deliver following the midterm elections. he begins a three-day trip to china. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. in addition he'll be visiting myanmar and australia. the president arrived in china this morning. when he meets with the chinese president, two issues will

likely top the agenda, trade and human rights. republicans tend to support it but they continue to be at loggerheads over immigration. yesterday during a pretaped interview on "face the nation," president obama defended his plan to use executive power to move forward if congress doesn't act. >> i'd prefer and still prefer to see it done through congress, but every day that i wait, we're misallocating resources, we're deporting people that shouldn't be deported, we're not deporting folks who are dangerous and should be deported. >> the president also discussed the midterm elections and why he thinks the republicans won big. >> there are times, no doubt about it, that we have not been successful in going out there and letting people know what it is we're trying to do and why this is the right direction. so there is a femalure in politics that we've got to improve on.

>> the president says he hasn't been persuasive enough and takes responsibility for the weak democratic showing. now, the president also said his decision to send an additional 1,500 troops into iraq shows that the battle with isis is entering a new phase. he says the air strikes have been effective but now it's time for the iraqi ground troops to go on the offensive and that the u.s. will man four centers where the iraqis will train. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. just before the president left america two captives were released. this morning kenneth bae and todd matthew miller are getting used to life back in the united states. >> reporter: home at last kenneth bae enjoyed late-night pizza and breakfast with his family who tweeted out this celebratory picture. arrived late saturday, he walked off the plane into his mother's arms. matthew todd miller then took his turn stepping onto american soil. afterward they thanked president obama and others who orchestrated his release. >> it's been an amazing two years. i learned a lot.

i grew a lot. i lost a lot of weight in a good way, but i'm very strong because of you. >> reporter: north korea accused 25-year-old miller of spying after he allegedly tore up his visa and demanded asylum seven months ago. the regime charged bae, a missionary with anti-government plans. he served hard labor. james clapper brought the two men home. during his secret mission he didn't meet kim jong-un who mysteriously disappeared from the public this summer but he brought a letter from president obama for the regime's young leader. he certified he was obama's personal envoy sent to negotiate their release. an obama administration official said north korea floated the possibility of a release several weeks ago and requested a senior u.s. statesmen. in his first term president obama sent former president

clinton to secure the release of two journalists, but clapper is the highest ranking current american official to visit pyongyang in 14 years. an administration official emphasized his plan was to free the two men but with his national security role he did discuss the north korea nuclear program with seniors there. this was an unusual mission for national intelligence director, but clapper rarely publishes his schedule, which made it easier for him to travel in secret. julianna goldman, cbs news, washington. the v.a. health care system is getting ready for the biggest overhaul in american history. bob mcdonnell told "60 minutes" he could fire over a thousand employees in the agency who violated the agency's values. it comes after long wait times of care at v.a. facilities. and the main nurse at the center of the ebola quarantine

fight says she's looking forward to returning to normal life. tonight marks the end of the 21-day incubation period since casey hicks cox had contact with an infected patient. she said she will continue to speak out how health care works are treated upon their return from west africa. a student who reported memory loss after drinking punch at a brown university frat party tested positive for date rape drug. the test resulted were published over the weekend. tests on another student have not been released. students said they became rapidly intoxicated at a party last month. the fraternity has been suspended, and one of the students also reported being sexually assaulted. well, coming up on the "morning news," laundry pod warnings. those paths are being blamed for putting hundreds of children in the hospital. and shooting stars spotted across the lone star state. this is the "cbs morning news."
