this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, november 18th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said he will respond harshly to a deadly attack on a jerusalem synagogue. two palestinians used knives, axes and guns to kill four worshippers. six other worshippers were wounded. police are looking for other suspects. this is the latest in a series of attacking by palestinians and israelis on the growing tensions over contested holy sites. secretary of state john kerry called the attack an act of pure terror and senseless brutality. palestinian president mahmoud abbas condemned the attack. and this morning, much of the country is engulfed in a deep freeze. a very archic freeze. a record chill brings record temperatures from the midwest all the way south to the east. there are freeze warnings from

texas to georgia gg and the cold weather system has triggered heavy snow in the great lakes region that could last more than a week. buffalo, new york, is expected to get 2 feet of snow, but some areas could see 3 feet. the windchill in kalamazoo was near zero last night. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbzz is following the very cold and very large storm system. >> we have a big arctic invasion underway yet again. what that means, it goes over the great lakes a big lake-effect snowstorm. uch of michigan, lower michigan and even western p.a. lig time snow totals. many areas seeing 6 to 12 inches. you see that purple, over a foot. you'll see that around grand rapids and east of marquette. whiteout conditions and just over three feet of snow over the next couple of days. big time totals, very hazardous

travel. the colder air taking over the country yet again. big temperature drop from the midwest to the southeast. high temperatures for tuesday staying in the 30s in atlanta may be getting out of the 40s in places like jacksonville. subfreezing in louisville. and subfreezing in new york city. that colder air is ending tuesday night right along the gulf coast. more freeze warnings will get all the way down to central florida, very unusual for this time of year. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. stay warm. and folks in the south are also cleaning up from tornadoes. a barn was

foundation in georgia and in alabama, power lines and trees were knocked down but there are no reports of serious injuries. the governor of missouri has activated the national guard as a grand jury weighs possible charges against a white police officer who shot black teenager michael brown. the fbi issued an intelligence bulletin, warning of the potential for violent protests following the decision. omar villafranca reports emotions are running high as the public waits for that decision. >> reporter: the missouri attorney general activated national guard monday. he's opening the guard will keep the peace when the decision of darren wilson for the august shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown is announced. in st. louis, the mayor said the guard will serve a backup role to state and local police. >> we do everything we can from a government standpoint to keep everything safe.

wilson apparently uninjured at the police station after he shot michael brown. that runs counter to the police station contention that wilson's eye socket had been fractured. >> and we've learned this morning that president obama has ordered a full review of u.s. policy regarding hostage negotiations. the order was issued this summer for the number of americans taken captive by overseas groups. >> a u.s. citizen of your country. >> recently, isis militants have beheaded three americans, including peter kassig, an aide worker whose execution was announced sunday. his parents shared their grief with the nation. >> our hearts are battered, but they will mend. the world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. >> reporter: kassig's parents told cbs news last month, they had been in touch with isis, trying to win the release of their son but isis demands, both financial and otherwise were out

of their reach. >> we have sent them back messages that we cannot do what you asked. you as the power to do it. >> reporter: in a letter written last week, a pentagon official tells california congressman duncan hunter, the review would include emphasis on examining family engagement, intelligence collection and diplomatic engagement policies. families have been told not to negotiate, and even threatened with prosecution. that may change. >> they had may decide to not prosecute cases where family members or those trying to get individuals out of harm's way are paying ransom. they would decide not to charge them with material support to terrorism. that's something that the federal government can decide not to prosecute. >> reporter: what is not mentioned in the letter is the issue of ransom payment. it has long been u.s. policy not to pay. yesterday, secretary of state john kerry called that policy

the hunt is on for a key 60th vote. senator kane, an independent from maine left the possibility open that he had could be in favor of it. louisiana governor mary landrieu. >> both parties for different political reasons in the senate of the united states was blocking a vote of keystone. but when the elections were over, the politics cleared up. >> reporter: in louisiana where the pipeline was popular, senator land drew faces bill kasich in a runoff next month. >> if this is what it takes, the fact that senator landrieu feels threatened that she may not get reelected and harry reid wants to take up the bill, i'm all for it. >> reporter: president obama could veto it. >> one major determinant of whether we should approve a pipeline shipping canadian oil

♪ it's christmastime there's no need to be afraid ♪ the star-studded musical effort to battle ebola is off to a big start "do they know it's christmas?" with one direction and other stars raised more than $1 million on its first few minutes on sale. band aid 30, their goal is to surpass the $11 million raised in 1984. doctors have known for decades that lowering cholesterol helps patients after a heart attack. but now a study is calling into question some new guidelines. dr. jon lapook reports. >> reporter: the study may change the way doctors treat patients with heart attacks or severe chest pains.

dr. chris cannon of brigham women's hospital presents the findings of the american heart association. >> we see benefits of seeking cholesterol levels that are low to very low in the post heart attack patients. >> reporter: more than 18,000 patients who had either heart attack or chest pain were treated. half received a high-dose statin and half received vytorin which combined a statin with another drug that increases cholesterol absorption. statin alone lowered the bad cholesterol or ldl to an average of 69. vytorin dropped it to an average of 54. after seven years the vytorin group has 6.4% viewer cardiovascular events such as death, heart attack and stroke. one year ago, new cardiology guidelines suggests doctors stop targeting specific ldl levels saying one is better than another. this doctor said the recommendations need to be changed immediately.

>> this study really did blow up the guidelines. i mean, the guidelines didn't have target levels for ldl cholesterol. and many of us thought that was wrong. and now within a year of issuing the guidelines, we know that that's wrong. >> reporter: the study is sponsored by the companies that make vytorin. but needs more research whether lowering cholesterol with other drugs would be just as effective. in this case, two drugs are better than one but a single more powerful medication may be just as well. dr. jon lapook, cbs news, new york. in washington, power players helped cbs' "face the nation" celebrate. vice president joe biden joined the party to toast the show and host bob schieffer. senator john mccain joked about being the most frequent guest with more than 100 appearances. cbs ceo les moonves was also on hand for the celebration. we will go to kalamazoo.
