"eye opener" is presented by toyota. let's go places. welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off so jeff glor is with us. >> good to be here. >> protests are building across the country in response to the grand jury's decision in ferguson. that city saw another round of violence overnight. it is in response to the decision not to charge officer darren wilson in michael brown's death. >> we'll hear from the brown family in just a moment. but first vladimir duthiers is in ferguson where the number of national guard troops tripled overnight. >> reporter: good morning, and good morning to our viewers in the west. the deployment of thousands of national guard troops here made for a much calmer nighten nighten streets of ferguson. that being said, we did witness acts of violence as protesters set alight a police cruiser not far from here. ferguson's mayor criticized the deployment of those troops in the aftermath of the decision to not indict darren wilson saying they were unable to prevent

immediate acts of violence. tuesday night vandals threw an object into this auto parts store and smashed out the windows. members of the missouri national guard were brought in to keep order. their presence ramped up in order to prevent property destruction, but it happened right in front of our cameras. a lone police car in the middle of the street. protesters attacked it. they set it on fire. all of a sudden police along with dogs have surrounded the area. the cruiser was set on fire in front of city hall. the flames kicked off by molotov cocktails. > no justice! >> no peace! >> reporter: at times, protester protesters and police stood face-to-face. during that heated exchange police were hit by an object. in turn, they doused the crowd with pepper spray. despite months of preparation, governor jay nixon on tuesday more than tripled the

national guard troops deployed across the state area. >> all together that will be more than 2,200 national guardsmen in the missouri region. >> reporter: the guard did not intervene monday night. with more than 700 troops in nearly 100 locations across the region. ferguson mayor james nole said he urgently called for more protection. >> we reached out through unified command and political channels to make it known we needed new assets more assets available immediately. >> reporter: but the mayor said he never heard back from the governor. captain ron johnson with the missouri state highway patrol told us the actions of some have been counterproductive. >> change doesn't come with dezrux. we wake up this morning and what has changed? what has changed is that a community is ruined. >> reporter: now attorney general eric holder has asked the department of justice to conduct an after-action review into police actions in the wake of monday night's violence.

>> vlad, thank you very much. protesters in new york city created gridlock. during the evening rush. they blocked major routes out of the city including the lincoln tunnel and the bridge. a second protest in times square stopped traffic. officers arrested people who would not clear the roads. in minneapolis a driver plowed into a group of protesters at an intersection. the pound started pounding on the car as it drove through. one woman was dragged and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver we are told is cooperating with police this morning. >> mobs in atlanta shut down an interstate and many city streets. police arrested 21 people. a few businesses were damaged. in los angeles demonstrators walked on to the 110 freeway. and in oakland, some protester set fire to dumpsters in the streets. police officer darren wilson says he feared for his life in his first interview with abc news. wilson said he was just doing his job when he shot michael brown.

mark strassmann is in ferguson. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and good morning to all of you watching in the west. until this interview, police officer wilson had told his story only to investigators and members of the grand jury. he said he did what he had to and he had a clear conscience. >> i just felt the immense power that he had. the way i've described it, it was like a 5-year-old holding onto hulk hogan. that's how big this man was. >> reporter: officer darren wilson said it was kill or be killed in august when he got into a confrontation with michael brown. >> at the time i gave myself another mental check. can i shoot this guy? legally, can i. the answer i gave to myself was, i have to. if i don't, he will kill me if he gets to me. because he's getting too close and he's just not stopping. he gets about 8 to 10 feet and leans forward like he's about to tackle me. i looked down the barrel of my gun and fired to what i thought was his head and that's where it went. >> reporter: brown's family was devastated by the news.

his stepfather lewis hedd, had this reaction. >> burn this [ muted ] down! >> reporter: within hours monday night, ferguson was burning. representatives for the brown family later called the reaction completely inappropriate and a case of raw emotion. >> if they present evidence to indict, there would have been an indictment. >> reporter: on tuesday brown family supporters called into question the grand jury investigation in which several witness his had conflicting accounts of the brown shooting. enough, in their opinion, to bring the case to trial. >> the use of a grand jury is to find out if there is probable cause to go to trial. you do not have a grand jury to decide on the guilt or innocence of the accused. >> reporter: officer wilson said

he chased after michael brown that day because that was his duty, and he said he had no other option but to kill him. a federal civil rights investigation into brown's death is now under way here in ferguson. >> mark, thanks. we now want to hear from michael brown's parents along with their attorney. benjamin crump. welcome, this morning. thank you for coming. our condolences again -- >> thank you. >> for the loss. all that's taken place, what do you hope happens now? what do you want to see happen now? >> change. that's all we're asking for. we don't accept that our son is gone, but we're dealing with it. there are other families that went through the same situation, and we all just want change all over. >> you know, the officer has spoken now for the first time and he's giving his version and i'd like to know your reaction.

he says your son threw the first punch. your son did not have his arms up. that your son was approaching him. that he was in fear of his life. leslie, what are you saying that this officer said today? >> i don't believe a word of it. he would never do anything like that. he would never provoke anyone to do anything to him and he wouldn't do anything to anybody. i don't believe a word of it. >> let's talk about the violence taking place in the streets, nationwide protests. in the beginning you called for peace, you all called for calm. what are you thinking when you see the violence and how the protesters in some cases people are saying have just gotten totally out of hand? >> i think, you know, nixon put it out there, and infuriated those people and from day one, which was august 9th, they had their voices -- >> tell people who nixon is.

>> nixon is our governor. >> is the governor of missouri. >> yes, ma'am. on august 9 voices were heard if there was not an indictment, how they would react, how they would lash out, what they would do. wi continued to ask for calm and continued to get out there and protest with them in a peaceful manner. anything that happened when we weren't there, we can't be held accountable for. that's not what we asked for. >> what happened your judgment? you said he was killed in cold blood. was there an altercation? is the officer lying when he said mike was at the car and he tried to punch him inside. do you believe that? >> charlie, you just got to go look at the statements and what the detective says. it seems like his story gets embellished every time he tells it. if it would have been done the normal way, he writes a report

within 48 hours, it would have been good, but that's not what happens. he gives his statement. he is never cross examined. >> he was known for falsifying all his reports. >> he's known for -- >> he's known for that he's known for that. >> my son doesn't have a history of violence. one image does not paint a person's entire life. we all do have a past. and nixon is one of the ones that came to me and let me know it shouldn't be part of this procedure because when he was 18, he did things and if people had of known, he wouldn't be governor. that to me is saying this didn't call for you to take my son's life. if something happened in that store, and that's a big "if." that could have been dealt with. but you didn't have to do what you do. he did what he wanted to do. >> what he wanted to do. >> yes. >> you think he wanted to kill your son? >> i don't think he wanted to

kill my son but he wanted to kill someone. >> in his statement he said he'd do it again. >> his conscience is clear? how can your conscience be clear after killing somebody even if it was an accidental death? >> and to allow the body to lie there for our hours. >> exactly. i couldn't even -- we couldn't even have my son's organs donated. you understand that. they wrong. they know they wrong. >> do you regret being out with the crowd that night? >> no. >> you don't. >> no. i was out there like everybody else. it was peaceful. i had some things i wanted to say to ferguson. ferguson has never come to me and even gave a condolence to me. >> no one. >> no one. >> no one in an official capacity has come to you -- >> i say like me you, sitting here, that's the appropriate --

>> not the mayor or anybody. >> no, no, no, nothing. >> whatever happened with the grand jury, we're here to tell you we mourn the loss of your son? >> nothing. nothing. >> did you every have anyone from ferguson come talk to you? >> no. we have just been disrespected all the way around. >> if you had been in that grand jury room what would you have said? >> why. >> why did this happen? >> that's my biggest question. why. why did you choose to wake up with a chip on your shoulder and do what you did to our son. i wouldn't even say just to our son, to any human being. >> thank you for coming again. >> thank you. and coming up, the business owners help each other in ferguson. how the victims of the vandalism are working together. that's ahead. at 7:30. >> storms in the west and east threaten chaos this morning for

ten, of millions of thanksgiving travelerings. it is raining right now along much of the east coast and snow is on the way. winter storm warnings erupt from north carolina to maine. meteorologist danielle niles of cbs station wbz expects more trouble in the northeast. danielle good morning. >> good rn mo morning, and good morning to our viewers in the west. a big storm on the east coast may impact travel today. it's going to work up across new england through today. lingering snow across the state of maine. although rain at the coastline as we head into thanksgiving morning. snowfall totals could top out over a foot in parts of central and northern new england. rain though at the coastline from seattle back down to portland could dump a couple of inches when all's said and done. temperatures in the 50s in seattle today. rising 70 to 80 when you get from san francisco back down to l.a. in terms of your thanksgiving forecast, cold air from the midwest, back into portions of new england, with some icy spots on the roads. 50s to 60s up and down the west

coast. >> danielle, we thank you. the airlines are rescheduled flights this morning. they have already canceled over 200 and are delaying others. including new york's la guardia. that's where vicente arenas is right now. good morning, vicente. >> good morning, good morning to our viewers in the west. this storm has caused more than 200 delays but so far no problem for flights on the west coast. heading home for the holidays can be stressful. factor in a winter storm barreling up the eastern seaboard and you've got major complications for millions of americans. >> it's going to get pretty crazy with the weather. it's exclusively crazy with the holidays anyway. >> air travel across the country is seeing an impact from the storm. nearly 140 flights were canceled. airlines are bracing for more numbers today as the storm moves into the northeast.

on tuesday, air travelers scrambled to move up their flights and many airlines accommodated their passengers without charging them to change their tickets. >> i didn't get charged a change fee, a help fee, i didn't get charged anything. >> throughout the northeast they the impact of the impending storm. amtrak estimate this thanksgiving they'll break records for travel. >> this is the super bowl of travel. a lot of people's expected travel plans may need a second look. >> reporter: the highways may not be a better option. aaa estimates over 40 million drivers will hit the road this thanksgiving. many of them will travel on interstate 95. that stretch of highway is forecast to see significant rain, sleet and snow. aaa estimates as many as 46 million people will travel 50 miles or more this holiday season. that is the highest number since 2007. >> vicente, thanks, hang in

there. two trolley cars collided in boston before the rain happened. officials say only one of the cars was carrying passengers at the time. the trolley line on the outskirts of the city was shut down for two hours. we are learning details this morning about a u.s. special operations rescue in eastern yemen. the mission involved about 2 dozen americans and a group of local soldiers. they reportedly flew by helicopter to an area near saudi arabia's border, then hiked to a cave, where al qaeda terrorists were holding hostages. the commandos rescued eight captives. none of them american. they killed seven of the militants. yemen's president, an american ally, reportedly asked for that mission. the university of virginia board is apologizing this morning to all sexual assault victims on campus. this follows the story of a student who says she was gang raped in a fraternity house. they approved a new no tolerance

of your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. good morning, 7:26. here's what's happening around the bay area right now. demonstrations in oakland got out of hand again and were violent for the second night. protestors lit fires in various areas. protestors threw rocks and bottles at law enforcement. a lot of damage done businesses, as well. some airlines have canceled flights. hundreds of flights today on one of the busiest travel days of the year. the decision comes ahead of an approaching winter storm that could dump a foot of snow in the northeast. traffic and weather. coming up right after the break.

bargains for holiday shoppers if you don't need that extra sweater. that story ahead. the "washington post" says the environmental protection agency announces new proposals today to reduce ozone eetoy standards. ozone is a major cause of respiratory illness from millions of americans. >> "the new york times" says hackers took down all of the computers at sony pictures entertainment. an apparent message left by hackers threatened to release company secrets unless their request was met. it's not clear what those hackers are demanding. "wall street journal" says apple hit a major milestone yesterday when it topped $700 billion, that's with a "b," in value. they unveiled iphones with the larger screens. on tuesday they closed at $117.60. that's up from $97.99.

that's when the iphone 6 was launched. the "los angeles times" looks at the unrest in ferguson. they look at what it calls rights of uses in the u.s. they say racial discrimination and that are major challenges. president obama is acknowledging the need to improve race relations in the united states. during an immigration speech in chicago tuesday the president outlined steps he will take in response to michael brown's death. >> to those who think that what happened in ferguson is an excuse for violence i do not have any sympathy for that. i have no sympathy at all for destroying your own communities. but for the overwhelm majority of people who just feel frustrated and pained because they get a sense that maybe some communities aren't treated fairly or some individuals

again. >> we had to basically shut down and get everybody to safety. >> he watched helplessly as rioters set fire to the restaurant. >> i don't understand why you would do that. what's the rationale behind that. >> reporter: he said while the police didn't was well protected by officers nearby businesses were not. looters broke into this restaurant but failed to burn it down. on tuesday the owners assessed the damage. >> they actually closed down the whole street. they're not letting the owners into the building because they're considering the whole street a crime scene. >> less than a mile down the road it's neighbor helping neighbor. >> we live here and we feel it's our civicic duty. this is ferguson. this is what ferguson does. >> reporter: residents are helping each other to protect

businesses. she's lived here for 20 years and owned kathy's kitchen. they believe much of the destruction is not from those in ferguson. >> i feel sorry for them. they allowed 30 people to roam and burn down businesses. those are not protesters. those are criminals. >> since the shooting one demonstrate er demonstrator has become the city's major has been working with many of them to help rebuild and reopen. >> thanks. in paris two suspected jewelry thieves are in custody after a dramatic heist where

they exchanged gunfire with police. the gunmen fled on a scooter after allegedly robbing a cartier store. it happened in a popular shopping district. the suspects ended up as a hair salon where they took a hostage. they surrendered after a tense two-hour standoff. nobody was hurt and the stolen jewels were recovered. stores are gearing up this morning. the national retail federation says more than 140 million of us will spend money at brick and mortar stores and online but despite those big data breaches over the past year less than 20% of the shoppers say they will let the cyber attacks influence their plans. they're still shopping. we're joined once again by tim. always good to have you. >> thanks for having me. >> online seemed to be okay. does it mean that online is safer? >> there are certainly risks to

both but there are measures you can take. when you walk into a store, you're kind of handing control over to the stores. i feel more control online. >> what do you do if your data has been stolen? >> it's very difficult. obviously if it's your credit card, you get a new credit card number. but if it's your social security number, you have to go to lifelock. you need to look at ongoing protection. you need to look at your credit report and make sure somebody isn't stealing your identity and doing things with it they shouldn't be. >> what do we do if we're shopping instore or online. >> if you're shopping online make sure your browser is updated. make sure you're shopping on sites that have ssl encryption.

if you see a green lockup in the address bar, that's a good thing. >> the ceo of target is on deck. they were the subject of a big data breach last year. do you think they're doing enough to be safe? >> they're doing a lot of things. they're not telling us everything because they want to keep some things safe and quiet. they're simplifying the networks. the breaches were really thanks to third-party vendors. target and home depot are look simply fig things, making it harder to keep things more secure. >> the question is how long that takes before all that changes. >> it takes a long time. we're seeing a lot of other major changes, for example, switching from traditional cards. we're finally seeing in the u.s. that will help to make things more secure. we'll see things roll out widely next year. up next here pot with a

we have new problems along the peninsula. this could affect you heading to sfo. there's been a traffic alert issued on southbound 101 on the approach to westbound 380. but it is backing up the ride now on 101 itself. you can see all the delays there. and again it sounds like one lane is blocked. they are hoping to re-open lanes but they just issued a traffic alert. so it's been out there for at least a half-hour already. here's a live look at other roads, quiet including at the bay bridge. it was quiet earlier and they turned off the metering lights. so good into san francisco from the east bay. that earlier fatal accident in santa rosa northbound 101 is clear.
