2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. now that the leftovers are in the fridge, millions of americans are already crossing off items on their holiday shopping list. consumers are expected to spend nearly $616 bill from november through december and while black friday is considered the official start to the holiday season many retailers are trying to kick start their earnings by opening up on thanksgiving. don champion is in times square this morning where shoppers have been at it since last night, don. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. no sleeping for shoppers coast to coast today, millions of them started spending on thanksgiving day, which could take a bielt out of black friday's bottom line. a crowd of about 200 people were ready to go when the toys "r" us here in times square opened its doors at 5:00 p.m., some waiting hours to get inside it's real good.

hopefully i'll be able to get everything i need to get today. >> reporter: while shoppers complete their lists, stores are opening earlier in order to snap up consumers looking for a deal. >> if someone kicks off the holiday shopping season earlier, and the consumers move in that direction, you as a competing retailer are going to get a smaller share of the wallet. >> reporter: but the thanksgiving sales are souring to those who say the holidays should be spent with loved ones. >> we should be at home with our family. my husband's got it off and i have to work it. >> reporter: retailers might want to get used to working on a holiday. analysts expect to see a thanksgiving sales increase of up to 5% over last year i think having more stores open on thanksgiving day takes away from black friday, saturday, and sunday. it extends and spreads out the amount of shopping that's done. >> reporter: despite that did retailers are expected to ring up more than $9 million in

retail stores today. that doesn't include the $2 million that will be spent online today. experts say if you're doing shopping online today, the best deals will be on laptops, storage devices, and kitchen warren. also one more. $718. that's the average amount of money each shopper is expected to spend this holiday season. start checking off that lift, anne-marie. >> oh, my goodness. hopefully you can get something for your honors, don. i won't tell anybody. there were some demonstrations overnight. dozens shoutd inside stoors as police watched from outside but in ferguson, thanksgiving was mostly peaceful. demonstrators are calling for a boycott of black friday shopping to protest the decision not to charge officer darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown.

susan mcginnis is in ferguson. susan, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good bhorning. this was the quietest night so far in ferguson. police officers are turning their attention here. they're saying black lives matter. their message today is black dollar matter. members of the national guard along with local law enforcement secured this walmart store in ferguson late into the night. the store is expected to open later today as other retailers explored their options followed violent protested earlier in the week when stores were looted and burned. they're hoping the calm will continue. >> let it grow from there. let it grow from something positive. show our younger generation, our yinn younger people that, hey, we can move on. protesters have taken to social media with th the #boycottblackfriday.

>> certainly the looting of our businesses does not work. hold your money. it works. >> reporter: many activists are urging people not to spend a dime today in honor of michael brown as they continue to pick up the pieces. when this heartbreaking photo of owner natalie went viral, 7,200 strangers donated $233,000 online to help her reopen. others in the community are painting murals on boarded up businesses. >> we're trying to aulg take ownership for this community. >> reporter: while ferguson may not be out of the woods yet, the healing may have already begun. now, tomorrow a week-long naacp march begins here. marches will head all the way from jefferson city to the governor's mansion. they're demanding reform to the police didn't here and nationwide. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in ferguson. thank you, susan. protesters in the city

1%. hong kong's hang seng lost a fraction. here on wall street the market reopens in record territory after thanksgiving and will close early today. on wednesday the dow rose 12 points to a new record high, the s&p was up 5, also a new high. the nasdaq gained 29 points. gopro will reportedly make its own line of flying drones. "the wall street journal" says the camera maker will start selling small multi-row toe helicopters swith cameras similr to the ones here. they sell from $500 to $1,000. they expect to be hot seller this holiday season. and fans get their first look at the new "star wars" trailer today. one texas theater is showing the trailer before every movie and even a continuous showing of it over and over.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports a thanksgiving triple header in the nfl. in the rematch of the nfc championship game, seattle's defensive back richard sherman intercepts a san francisco pass in the first quarter.

that leads to the seahawks' only touchdown, a pass from russell wilson to richard sherman. sherman makes a second interception in the fourth quarter as the 49ers were driving and seattle beat san francisco, 19-3. in detroit the detroit lions' quarterback matthew stafford passed for 390 yards and connected with wide receiver calvin johnson for two touchdowns. johnson set a record as the fastest player to reach 10,000 yards receiving. and detroit beat chicago, 34-17 to improve its record to 8-4 and boost the chances of making the postseason. and a thanksgiving to remember for eagles' quarterback mark sanchez. he runs for a touchdown on philadelphia's first possession against dallas and then throws a t.d. the next time the eagles get the ball. it was quite a turnaround from the last time sanchez played on thanksgiving. you might remember this infamous play when he was a member of the jets. it came to be known as the buttfumble after he crashed into the backside of one of his teammates. sanchez talked about what being
