20or friday, december 5th, this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, december 5th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. protesters did not let up overnight in voicing their anger over the eric garner case. demonstrators in new york city clashed with police as hundreds tried to board the staten island ferry. other protesters laid homemade coffins across the entrance of the manhattan bridge, allegedly representing people killed by nypd officers. don champion is on staten island with more on the unrest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the protests lingered into the early morning hours. while things have remained peaceful, one thing is for sure. growing outrage over the grand jury's decision about what happened here shows no sign of slowing down. a steady stream of protesters disrupted traffic on new york city's western highway for a second night.

earlier the most peaceful demonstrations took a turn in times square where police made several arrests. others rallied for eric garner at the site of the staten island ferry with a march in the street. >> enough is enough. our people are getting murdered every day and i'm just sick and tired of it. >> reporter: anger over a grand jury's decision not to indict the police officer daniel pantaleo in eric garner's death continues to spill over to other cities across the nation. thousands of people of all nations pushed for change at boston's christmas tree lighting. >> we need to get the message across. >> reporter: officer pantaleo testified before the grand jury for two hours about what happened here in july when he took garner down as cameras rolled. he maintains it was not a choke hold he was using but a maneuver he learned at the police academy. >> is that, in fact, within the framework of what we teach our officers in terms of how do you take down a person you're attempting to arrest. >> reporter: in an interview

with cbs's scott pelley, new york city police commission meribel brat p says the department is investigating. the nypd will also retrain thousands of its officers in using less force when possible. now, the department of justice continues its own independent investigation into garner's death. garner's family is also said to be preparing a civil lawsuit. anne-marie? >> don champion in staten island. thank you, don. cleveland police department is under review this morning. officers are accused of excessive force in a number of incidents in the past few years. dean reynolds is in cleveland where the mayor admits there are problems. >> reporter: november 29th, to 12, a high-speed police chase in cleveland turned into this. melissa williams and timothy russell were killed in a literal

hail of bullets. 137 rounds fired into the car. police said they felt the couple shot at them but no gun was ever recovered. will jackson is their uncle. >> i can't pinpoint it in my mind, but all i know is it was like a modern-day lynching. >> reporter: on new year's day 2011 an unarmed man was pursued in a traffic violation, and after surrendering, helicopter video captured him savagely being beaten by officers. none was prosecuted. and days ago tamir rice, brandishing a toy gun -- was shot by a police officer. >> it looks like they've got him in custody. >> reporter: the justice department is basically confirming what many in cleveland already knew, including examples of rogue officers inflaming routine situations, slanting their after-action reports or not writing reports at all. justice looked into over 600

cases of excessive force here from 2010 to 2013. cleveland mayor frank jackson requested the review. >> there are problems in the division of the cleveland police, and this review has demonstrated some of those problems. >> well, good afternoon. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder said cleveland is one of 20 police forces undergoing a justice department investigation. has any pattern or pathology emerged from these that you think leads cops to cross the line? >> i think we certainly see patterns where you see inadequate training, where you see resource deficiencies, where you see cultural problems that exist within police departments. >> reporter: cleveland and the justice department will now try to work out an agreement that would include the naming of an independent monitor who would oversee and ensure much needed reform. dean reynolds, cbs news, cleveland.

a smoke filled cockpit forced a packed jetliner to make an emergency landing. 225 passengers were onboard a delta flight from detroit to ft. lauderdale when it made an unscheduled stop in toledo last night. local fire crews converged on the plane after getting the mayday call. no one on board the plane was hurt. a second jet was brought in to finish the flight. and president obama will officially announce today his pick for secretary of defense. ashton carter is widely expected to be the nominee. he's a physicist and former deputy secretary of defense. carter has already received bipartisan support and many predict an easy confirmation. he will replace chuck hagel, who announced his resignation last month. and an american hostage's family is pleading with his captors for his return.

they raided a cave and killed six al qaeda guards. troops saved eight hostages but somers was not in the group. his brother and mother have made a video to address his captors saying they had no knowledge of the attempt to rescue him. >> please show mercy and give us an opportunity to see our luke again. he is all that we have. >> al qaeda says the united states has two more days to meet unspecified demands or somers could be killed. and police in abu dhabi have arrested a woman in connection with the murder of an american teacher. security officials think the attack could be the work of a lone wolf inspired by islamic militants to target western citizens. charlie d'agata reports from london. >> reporter: abu dhabi police released dramatic video showing the arrest of the woman suspected of the fatal stabbing of an american school teacher.

ibolya ryan was 47 years old from colorado, the mother of twin boys aged 11. why ryan was murdered is unclear, but the uae government says ryan may have been targeted because she was american, and a possible terrorist attack is under investigation. tv footage released by officials shows the suspect entering an upscale mall. she headed to the bathroom where police said the stabbing took place. she emerged 90 minutes later, dodging alarmed shoppers and making a getaway. the attack left a trail of blood on the bathroom floor. police identified this bloodied kitchen knife as the murder weapon. ryan's murder came just weeks after threats were discovered on extremist websites encouraging attacks on teachers in american schools. the police said the suspect was also seen entering an apartment building of an egyptian-american doctor where she planted a homemade bomb outside his door.
