the united states will continue conducting raids to save americans held hostage by militants in foreign countries, this despite the failed rescue attempt that cost american hostage luke sommers his life in yemen this weekend. al qaeda fighters killed somers in a south african hostage just as american commandos were attempting to rescue. danielle nottingham has that story. >> u.s. officials say al qaeda linked killed luke somers. the u.s. says the operation in southern yemen lasted about 30 minutes and during the mission special forces lost the element of surprise. this video posted on a jihadi website purports to show the fire fight that broke out once navy s.e.a.l.s were spotted.

during the fight the s.e.a.l.s saw a militant run into the building where somers and a south african teacher pierre korkie were being held. when they entered, they found both had been shot. >> it was a very dangerous and complicated mission, but like always in these efforts, there's risk. >> president obama authorized the rescue mission friday, believing somers' life was in eminent danger. thursday al qaeda india arabian peninsula posted the video threatening to kill the american. >> i agreed with the president's decision. don't think it was an easy decision. i think it was the right decision to actually engage and try to go in for the rescue attempt. >> the 3-year-old was kidnapped in 2013. this was the second attempt to rescue somers. in late november navy s.e.a.l.s raided a cave in yemen but he wasn't there. president obama strongly condemned the killing say those who harm u.s. citizens will feel

the long arm of the justice. danielle nottingham, cbs news. >> meanwhile the militants were planning to free korkie on sunday. the aid group he worked for paid $200,000 for his release. u.s. officials were unaware of the talks before ordering the raid. well, this morning marks the formal end of the war in afghanistan. the u.s. and nato held a flag lowering ceremony today to observe the end of the combat mission. it comes 13 years after the invasion to topple the taliban government. the coalition will keep 13,000 troops in afghanistan. that is down from a peak of 140,000 in 2011. an explosive senate report is due out in the coming days detailing the cia's use of torture on terror suspects in the years after 9/11. this morning there's a debate on capitol hill over whether this information needs to be made

public. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. this 480-page report summarizes 6,000 pages of classified documents, and u.s. officials who have seen the reports say it includes disturbing new information about cia techniques including waterboarding. the big question now is what impact would this information have. cbs news has learned that the senate report concludes that the cia went beyond legal limits when interrogating terror suspects including the use of waterboarding, that the techniques were not effective in getting information and that the cia systematically lied to itself, to the white house, to the department of justice, and to congress about the effectiveness of the program in order to company it running. republican incumbent mike rogers chairman of the house committee warns that it could create a backlash.

>> our foreign reports have reported that this will cause violence and death. we've seen what happens when others are used. >> only democratic members of the senate committee are signing off on the report's release. senator dianne feinstein told the "los angeles times" the report needs to get out. in august president obama said he supports the release. >> we did a whole lot of things that were right, but we tortured some folks. we did some things that were contrary to our value. >> but the cia and republicans on the committee are expected to file rebuttals. michael hayden who ran the cia for part of the time in question defended the agency on "face the nation." >> but to say that we relentlessly over an expanded period of time lied to everyone about a program that wasn't doing any good, that beggers the imagination. >> senator john kerry has asked senator feinstein to delay the release of the report.

if it is not leased before the new republican controlled senate controls in january, it may not see the light of day. >> susan mcginnis in washington. susan, thank you. meanwhile six former guantanamo bay prisoners are beginning new lives in uruguay this morning. all six men were arrested in 2002. they were never charged. the group had been cleared for release in 2009 on the condition they don't return home, but the u.s. struggled to find countries willing to take them. >> even though some of these individuals may not have been inner core al qaeda members, they did have connections to al qaeda affiliates and other networks. all these individuals, even if they're deem not to be security threats aren't angels and certainly have connections back to certain networks that are of concern. >> 136 prisoners remain at guantanamo.

an american couple is resuming their lives at home after a two-year ordeal. matthew and grace huang and their two adopted sons went to church sunday in california. the huangs were jailed in qatar in 2013 after a conviction for starving their 8-year-old daughter. margaret brennan spoke with them after they were cleared and arrived back in the u.s. >> what was it like when the plane touched down in los angeles? >> i was excited to be leaving qatar after two very, very difficult years. >> and what was one of the first things you did, grace? >> hugged the boys. i just wanted to see them and hold them and tell them how proud i am of him and how courageous they've been these two years. >> you can see more of margaret brennan's exclusive interview with the huangs coming up on
