the north bay... getting so last minute supplies for todays storm. a live look at the golden gate bridge. not a lot of people commuting at this hour. it's 4:12. but the north bay will get the brunt of the storm early on. right now, the big problem is wind. so if you are going to be heading over some bridges, take precautions. a lot of wind out there, as well. a lot of people scrambling around the north bay last night for some last-minute supplies to get ready for the storm. >> yeah. people waited in long lines at the santa rosa home depot to get sandbags. inside the sonoma county office of emergency services, it was eerily quiet. county workers were prepping for a long day of work while asking everyone else to stay home. >> there will be problems all over the valley, including sonoma valley and the coast everywhere. >> emergency workers are concerned about the excess water that will come rushing down the russian river basin from mendocino county. san francisco, like many bay area cities, has been preparing for this big storm, a
4:13 am
lot of work being done to keep this part of the mission from turning into a lake. the area was built on a lagoon and mission creek years ago. so when it rains water flows downhill and pulls in that general area. >> the neighborhood has flooded five times in four years damaging homes, businesses and cars and yesterday, workers put up floodgates and plugged up drains that are notorious for flooding. many residents plan to park in other neighborhoods during the storm. >> and rain here in the bay area means a whole lot of snow up in the sierra nevada. the system is expected to dump as much as 3 feet of snow in the sierra. drivers headed to the mountains are warned they could face white-out conditions. caltrans says it has trucks now loaded up with salt and an army of plows on standby on highway 80 and highway 50. reno is bracing itself for 70- mile-per-hour wind gusts. lake tahoe is a mess. waves on the lake are expected in some areas at 7 feet today. so if you are an avid skier, might want to wait a day or
4:14 am
two. >> fresh snow up there, though. >> i would leave tomorrow if i'm heading to the high sierra or even saturday. but boy, once you get there, it is snowing, right? and it's blowing, as well. and that's a big factor this morning. the winds and the rain, good morning, everyone. let's go ahead and take a look at our hi-def doppler radar. we have our "eye on the storm" and boy, do we have some mighty rainfall now into entering the northern portions of the bay area. the green light, yellow moderate, orange heavy rainfall and you don't want to see purple. we have some of that in the forecast modems. the purple indicates an inch of rain an hour. pockets of moderate rainfall up and down the north bay. in the east bay, we see a lot of this moving into berkeley. otherwise it is the north bay that's hammered this morning and will be so until 9:00 this morning. you can see 101 and highway 37 some pretty moderate downpours and then you have to throw in the winds currently gusting up
4:15 am
to 37 miles per hour. they will continue to gust up to 50 miles per hour at times. and then in the highest elevations, this is throughout the entire bay area, in warning is in effect, the gusts will be in excess of 80 miles per hour. flash flood watch in effect for the entire bay area. we already have saturated soil from last week's storm. now we have this huge downpour. this is a 24-hour storm. we'll see up to 8" of rain in the heaviest locations generally speaking across the urban locations 2 to 4." now we have the high surf advisory with 25 feet swells. from now until 9 a.m. that's the heaviest rain and the gustiest winds. after 9:00 you'll still see light to moderate rainfall. the front will then move into the central bay. we'll see the heaviest rainfall between 9:00 and noon. more likely 1:00 in the eastern portion of our bay area. and then on the back side of that light and moderate rain
4:16 am
and then the peninsula and south bay heaviest rain 1:00 to 3:00 this afternoon and light to moderate through the evening commute. the wind and the commute, the impact will all be on the high side. so you want to keep that in mind if you need to go out and about, you want to give yourself extra time. futurecast shows the front behind it. then you will have pockets of heavy downpours that could contain thunderstorms. from 4 p.m. through friday showers. then we dry out and assess the situation on saturday and do all of our clean-up, sunday dry with increasing cloud cover leading to the potential of more rain showers friday night through monday. temperatures today very subtropical. this area of low pressure is tapping into subtropical moisture. it's kind of like the pineapple express. i know you've heard that term
4:17 am
before. here we go with the extended forecast. rain showers on-again, off- again through our friday. dry day on saturday. increasing cloud cover on sunday. showers back in the forecast albeit a minor system monday, tuesday and wednesday. >> the roads are okay. it's the overnight winds that are really picking up causing downed trees. no major accidents out the door. it is early but those downed trees are causing problems now including on the eastshore freeway. this must have really startled this big rig driver around 3 a.m. one of those trees came down on to the top of the big rig. and it's still blocking up to three lanes of traffic eastbound 80. it is counter-commute. we are just seeing minor delays now and westbound traffic is looking okay trying to get out of hercules into pinole. just the eastbound lanes. but it's still early enough that it's not causing a major backup. they are hoping to have everything open within the next hour so we'll continue to watch
4:18 am
this. apparently everyone was okay. we haven't heard of any major injuries. watch out for the winds and the falling trees. i notice them shaking in san francisco. the bay bridge has a high wind advisory. all your bridges have a high wind advisory. the wind is strong especially coming into san francisco. you have to fight with your steering wheel. traffic is light into san francisco. no major delay at the bay bridge toll plaza. san mateo bridge has a high wind advisory. the drive time is 13 minutes between hayward and foster city. so overall, like i said, things are looking okay but really watch out for the high winds. no major delays right now through the livermore valley. we do have a high wind advisory again a chp-issued high wind advisory for the altamont pass and the rain is coming down the heaviest all along 101. roberta just showed you her hi- def doppler. from you in marin county that's where it's really coming down.
4:19 am
we haven't heard any major flooding yet on 101 and it looks like just some light traffic right now across the golden gate bridge. but please still use mass transit if you can. we of course want you to be safe on the roads so we have some safe driving tips for you. be careful on the roads where the floodwaters have receded a bit. roads could be actually weakened by the rain. and if a power line happens to fall on your car, stay inside, wait for a trained professional to help you. also, open your window just a little bit if you're caught in traffic. it will help avoid any potential carbon monoxide poisoning. all right. we know people are hopefully going to stay safe on the roads. we'll continue to track it. in the meantime, frank and michelle, back to you guys. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. 4:19. in san jose people hope they have done enough to keep all the water out. an army of sandbaggers there, they were shoveling and filling those sandbags as fast as they could yesterday. anything to keep the water out. the city of san francisco says it ran out of sandbags yesterday. it gave out 12,000 of them as the storm approaches.
