>> and i'm your mother. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for weday, this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, december 17th, 2014. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in fur anne-marie green. the fallout from that massive data hack at sony pictures is escalating. the group that says it's responsible for the cyber attack is threatening violence against theaters showing the movie at the center of the attack. don champion is at the new york city theater where the premiere of "the interview" was supposed to be held tomorrow. good morning. don. >> good morning, lauren. growing fallout has led to the cancellation of the premiere. if that's not enough, the owner of more than 200 theaters across the country says it, too, is planning on canceling plans to show the controversial film. >> you want us to assassinate the leader of north korea? >> yes.

>> whaaat? >> "the interview" was a comedy but the lead-up has been anything but. they've decided to cancel its planned showing of the movie. it comes after a chilling message posted by cyber hackers guardians of peace warning moviegoers to stay away from tharts when they start showing the film. the warning reads the world will be full of fear. remember the 11th of september, 201. it's opening nationwide on christmas day. while sony is moving forward with its release, in an unusual movie, the company has told theaters they don't have to show the film. fallout has even led to the cancellation of it here in new york at sunshine cinema in manhattan. police in new york and l.a. will take precautions in light of the new threat. >> our primary posture is going to be to have a police presence

in a response capability that will reassure people who may have heard about this and have concerns. >> the fbi and department of homeland security say there's no credible intelligence showing any active plot exists. you may recall hackers have also hit sony in recent weeks by releasing company documents and embarrassing e-mails. while north korea has denied any involvement, we're told the malware used was written the korean language. lauren? >> don champion in new york. thank you. an afghan official says a u.s. drone strike killed four pakistan taliban and seven others. the drone reportedly targeted a pickup truck yesterday afternoon as they were staging a deadly attack on a military school in pakistan. a prayer service was held this morning in peshawar for 42 victims, most for children. alphonso van marsh is in london. good morning. >> good morning, lauren.

a three-national mourning period began in pakistan as the nation prepares for mass funerals. yesterday's attack by seven taliban gunmen left pakistan in shock. students were gunned down indress krimm natalie, and fee mail teachers were burned alive. they made their way to an auditorium filled with students and opened fire. the government is promising a tough response. the taliban said the attack was revenge for pakistan's military operation against its fighters in northwest afghanistan. the government of the prime minister is trying to negotiation peace with them, but those have failed. the pakistanis want to overthrow the government and establish a strict form of islamic law. they're aligned with the taliban and afghanistan and al qaeda. this morning the prime minister lifted the moratorium on the

death penalty in pakistan. lauren? >> alphonso van marsh in london. thank you. australian prime minister tony abbott is ordering a sweeping investigation into the deadly hostage crisis. the review comes as australia pays tribute to the two victims of monday's cafe siege at a makeshift memorial. abbott says he doesn't know why the gunman man ha roron monis f off a security watch list. >> we do need to know why he seems to have fallen off our security agency's watch list. why did he have a gun license in the first place? that's the relevant question here. >> monis took 17 people hostage in a cafe. the siege ended 16 hours late when the police rushed to free captives. >> outside philadelphia community is remembering the victims of a deadly rampage. mourners gathered tuesday to honor six people shot and stabbed to death monday.

police say a former marine killed his ex-wife and five of her relatives. a two-day manhunt put the community on edge. police found the body of bradley stone in the woods about a half mile from his home. he died from self-inflicted stab wounds. well, we haven't said this in a while. the price of some oil rose slightly. it rose 2 cents to close at $55.93 a barrel tuesday but prices are still half of what they were six months ago. the dramatic drop in the price of oil has been a blow to russia's oil-driven economy leading to a catastrophic fall in the value of the ruble. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> lauren, good morning. the ruble fell sharply early this morning but is now starting to recoup some of those losses. still it is down 50% so far this year. a massive interest rate hike did not help on tuesday.

now adding insult to injury, president obama is supposed to sign new legislation imposing new economic sanctions against russia. the collapse of the ruble sent many russians scrambling to salvage what they could, spending money on big ticket items before their mon lost any more ruble. the ruble lost 6% of its value yesterday. a desperate measure by the russian central bank raising interest rates to 17% didn't work. >> it's had an opposite effect because people sense it to be a panicky move by the russian bank. >> reporter: one of russia's largest car dealers suspended sales, and apple said it stopped online sales in russia. sanctions imposed by the u.s. and europe over russia's move in crew crane are also taking a toll, but secretary john kerry said president vladimir putin has a choice. >> the sanctions were clearly to intended to invite president putin to make a different set of choices. now, these sanctions could have been lifted months ago. they could be lifted in weeks or days depending on the choices

their cars got stuck on inundated roadways. the rain also caused damage at businesses including a fabric plant that was flooded. former florida governor jeb bush is a big step closer to running for the white house this morning. an announcement tuesday ends months of speculation about his intentions. craig boswell reports. >> reporter: bush posted on facebook he has decided to actively explore the possibility of running for president of the united states. imcomes after the 61-year-old republican accepted an honorary degree from the university of california. >> people often model their lives after their parents. their parents went to college, so do they. if your parents worked in politics, well, you know the rest. >> bush will be creating what's called a leadership pack allowing him to raise money for trips to iowa and new hampshire

to talk to donors. but if he should run it's not an open path to a nomination. >> in 2010 the tea party became a big part of the republican party. it's not something the bushes have had to deal with. >> reporter: conservatives who oppose his reforms on immigration and education poll i have already blasted off e-mails telling him not to run. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. bill cosby won't face criminal charges over claims he sexually abused a teenager in 1974. prosecutors in los angeles declined to charge the comedian. they say the statute of limitations has passed. the accuser says cosby molested her when she was 15 years old. cosby's attorney says she tried to export $250,000 from him. severe turbulence forced an american airlines plane to make an emergency landing on tuesday. flight 280 from seoul, south korea, was headed to dallas when it hit the rough air.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," sprint faces a massive fine, and a core victory for apple. jill wagner's at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. sprint is facing a record fine from the federal communications commission over allegations of cramming. cramming is charging customers for unwanted services like text message alerts, horoscopes, and sports scores.

the fcc will reportedly fine sprint $105 million. that would tie a settlement reached with at&t on similar charges earlier this year. stocks on wall street ended lower after a rally lost steam. the dow lost 111 points yesterday. the s&p fell 16. and the nasdaq finished the day 57 points lower. a california jury rejected a 10-year-old's anti-trust lawsuit against apple. the plaintiffs accused apple of using software to create a monopoly in the digital music market. the lawsuit involves ipods sold from september of 2006 to march of 2009. they were able to play songs only from itunes or downloaded cds. seaworld is starting to lay off hundreds of employees. seaworld's stock and attendance has gone down since the release of that documentary "blackfish." it's critical of seaworld's handling of killer whales.

vice president joe biden led a ceremony last night near the white house to light the national menorah. it with us to mark the beginning of the jewish holiday hanukkah. the jewish tradition started back in 1979. now to a christmas story that happened 100 years ago this month. it was part miracle and part mythical. mark phillips reports. >> merry christmas, merry christmas. >> reporter: the man in the hat with the spike on top is german. the man in the cap is british. this is a re-enactment of one of the most storied episodes of the first world war when men from the opposing armies briefly stopped trying to kill each other and met to exchange christmas greetings, even, as the story goes, to play soccer.
