good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. new york mayor bill de blasio is calling for calm and a temporary pause for weeks of protests over police-related violence. he wants demonstrators to wait until after two slain officers were laid to rest. but they're rejecting his calls this morning. that, as investigators learn more about the gunman and what he was doing before the deadly shooting. don champion is in new york, good morning, don. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the mayor called for a halt on demonstrations came as he and the police commissioner met with the grieving families of the officers killed. meantime, investigators have new clues as to what the gunman was doing before saturday's deadly encounter. >> this is a difficult time for both of our families. >> reporter: as the families of wenjian liu and rafael ramos lay their loved ones to rest, the new york city mayor bill de

blasio called for a moment of reflection. >> until these funerals are past, let's focus just on these families and what they have lost. >> reporter: but protesters like this group that staged a sit-in at grand central terminal monday vowed to up the fight. >> if anything this is a time of protests even more. >> reporter: they don't want ismaaiyl brinsley's violent act to call for reform. >> it seems like a plan to try to attack this one guy with hundreds of thousands of protesters who have been protesting against police brutality in general. >> reporter: investigators say brinsley watched and recorded a protest in the city earlier this month but did not participate. his sister maintains he was not targeting police. >> he was emotionally troubled. it had nothing to do with police retaliation. >> reporter: authorities released last known video of brinsley carrying a small white bag possibly with the gun he used to kill the officers inside. they're now trying to piece together where he was in the

hours before the shooting. now, the mayor says he does plan on attending both funerals. officer ramos' funeral is scheduled for this weekend. officer liu's funeral will take place as his family arrives from china. anne-marie. >> don champion in new york. thank you, don. well, bill bratton is new york's police commissioner. james brown spoke to him about the tense relationship between mayor bill de blasio and the city's police department. >> every mayor of new york city has had strained relations with the police force that they lead over the years. but the mayor's experience is not unique. every mayor i've worked for have had strained relations in boston, l.a. it's part of the political train. you need to look beyond the morale to the performance of the officers and this is a testament to their professionalism. they're still throughout working

very hard in demonstrations in the face of greater adversity. they're policing despite the horrific murders over the weekend. they're still going towards the danger, not stepping back. so the morale is something that's internalized and has not affected their performance which is what you would ask. >> with respect to moving forward, an apology, i know the mayor went to the hospital to pay his respects to the slain officers, some of the officers there were so upset, they turned their backs on him when he passed by. is an apology offered either by the officers to the mayor or the mayor to the officers? >> the circumstance was unfortunate. it was a manifestation of frustration of some officers. something that i'm certainly not approving of. and we'll be proud of the dialogue going forward how do we find, as i've indicated, common ground. i've been in the business a long time, and these issues are not new. they're not unique for new york. i've dealt with them in every city i've worked in los angeles, boston and just part of it, if you will.

well, the justice department will investigate a deadly police shooting in milwaukee. protesters marched through the city after the local district attorney decided not to charge a white police officer in the death of a mentally ill black man in april. he had been sleeping in a park. the d.a. says the officer acted in self-defense when he shot the man 14 times. the u.s. attorney will review the case. and millions of holiday travelers and last-minute shoppers are in for some rough weather. heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will develop today in the southeast. tornadoes are possible along the gulf coast. christmas eve will bring rain up the eastern seaboard. the upper midwest will see snow. in colorado, a winter blast made driving dangerous for the evening commute monday. snow and icy conditions caused accidents and delays. north korean websites are back online this morning after a temporary shutdown. it's not clear who or what caused the widespread outages. experts say it's one of the worst network failures in years.

it comes amid a growing war of words between washington and pyongyang over a cyberattack on sony. north korea vigorously denies involvement. craig boswell reports from the white house. >> reporter: north korea is issuing new threats against the u.s. saying our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the white house, the pentagon and the whole u.s. mainland. the totalitarian regime is angered over what they said is reckless over the sony picture hack. president obama said north korea is responsible and called it cybervandalism. >> we take it very seriously. we will respond proportionately, as i said. >> reporter: monday, north korea experienced a major internet outage. but the cause is not immediately clear. the obama administration says only part of the response may be visible. it's considering placing north korea back on the list of state sponsors of terror and more sanctions. >> he is trying to deter north

korea. >> reporter: jonathan pollock, a senior fellow at the brookings institution said north korea is over the top. >> it may make them feel better, if you will, to be able to say this is what we're going to do to you. but in a, was it's an empty threat. >> reporter: the state department suggested that north korea work on a different response. >> for the culpability. >> reporter: sony pictures says it's still exploring options for distributing "the interview." the film that sparked the controversy including a possible online release. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. pope francis is calling for a little more christmas spirit inside the vatican. the pope used his annual christmas message to publicly dress down the church bureaucracy monday. he accuses the cardinals bishops, priests who serve him of spirit all-timers. and in a blistering indictment, francis accused them of using their vatican careers to grab

he spent six months in orbit and released a six-minute video of aurora's clouds, stars, oceans, cities and other fascinating sights. a delta air lines baggage handler in atlanta is facing charges of gun smuggling. he was arrested at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport monday. he is charged with bringing at least 18 guns past airport security on december 10th. officials say he gave them to a former delta employee who took the weapons on a flight to new york. both men are in custody. and on the "cbs moneywatch," bmw expands a recall related to faulty air bags, and a drug to treat melanoma. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. the stocks start in record territory. the dow gained 154 points monday closing at a new record high. the s&p 500 was up 7, to another record high.

its 50th of this year. the nasdaq rose 16 points. asian stocks finished lower after wall street's rally. hong kong's hang seng dropped a quarter percent. the shanghai dropped 3%. the nikkei is closed for holiday. bmw is recalling 140,000 vehicles in the u.s. to replace the potentially dangerous takata air bags. the automaker is agreeing to government demands to expand the air bag recall. leading to at least five deaths. the bmw 3 series cars made between january 2004 and august 2006. the fda has approved a new skin cancer drug from bristol mierssquib. opdivo to treat melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

it will be available for tumors that spread throughout the body or cannot be radio moved by surgery. victims of ponzi schemer bernie madoff may be getting back more money. $322 million may be distributed if the judge approves. that brings the total returned so far to more than $7 billion out of the 20 billion madoff stole. and beer sales in the u.s. are still falling. continuing a trend, shipments of beer were down to 211 million barrel last year. according to beer makers sales of seven major brands including budweiser declined more than 20% between 2008 and 2013. anne-marie. >> jill wagner at the new york stock exchange, thank you, jill. straight ahead, your tuesday morning weather. and in sports, the last "monday night football" game of the nfl season was not a good one for peyton manning.

the country. in sports, the cincinnati bengals are headed to the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. the bengals took advantage of a sloppy peyton manning. he threw for over 300 yards but was intercepted four times. twice they were returned for scores. bengals beat the broncos 37-28. the nba, san antonio finally won at home after losing three straight games in overtime. tim duncan had 21 points and 12 rebounds as the spurs shot a season high 64% to beat the clippers 125-118. tony parker led the spurs with 26 points. in dallas, the hawks held on to beat the mavericks. dennis schroeder scored a career

the rock 'n' roll singer hit the big time with a beatles tune. ♪ with a little help from my friends ♪ >> reporter: he formed the cover live in woodstock in 1969 and it became the theme song for the htv show "the wonder years." >> i remember it like it was in the late '60s, we also felt we were -- i don't know. ♪ >> reporter: john belushi famously imitated cocker on "saturday night live" and the two performed "feelin' all right" together on the show. cocker battled substance abuse but managed to kick his bigger demon. >> i had a bout with heroin and cocaine and then booze. >> reporter: much of cocker's best work wasn't his own. he was a successful cover artist with hits like billy preston's "you're so beautiful." ♪ you are so beautiful.

♪ >> reporter: his voice cracked on the last note and the song booked a top-ten hit in 1975. cocker recorded a duet "up where we belong" with jennifer warren for the 1982 film "an officer and a gentleman" ♪ up where we belong ♪ >> reporter: it was a number one hit that went on to win both a grammy and an academy award. joe cocker passed away in colorado which he called home for the past two decades. danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. ♪ well, an orangutan has been granted some human legal rights in argentina. in a ruling published monday a court said the animal named sandra is a nonhuman person and has the right to personal freedom. she's lived at a zoo in buenos aires for 20 years. the ruling means sandra will be transferred to a nature sanctuary. this is the "cbs morning news." for nearly six months, we followed a group of high school dropouts who got a second chance through a program run by the national guard in los angeles. they have endured academic, mental and physical challenges. but now the series ends with their new beginning. michelle miller reports. >> let's go, get up! >> get up! >> hurry up! >> get up! >> reporter: this was the first day of challenge academy back in july. >> you better hurry up, let's go! >> reporter: these rebellious unfocused dropouts had a wake-up call like none they've ever had. >> the day is going to be a long day. i told you it was coming. >> reporter: over the past 153 days they've been torn down by discipline and built back up with praise. >> good job, i'm proud of you kiddo, good job.

>> reporter: we have followed all eight of these cadets through the academy. we saw francisco lazo and his mother's emotional good-bye on intake day. >> you're the best. >> reporter: we saw marissa stowe go from lagginging behind to one of the top in her class. >> this is my mom. >> reporter: and during a home visit with christa hopkins, we discovered the source of her pain. >> i don't want to end up like my mom. >> reporter: how many of you expected you'd be changed people? >> i just thought, hey, you know what, my parents screwed me over. they didn't raise me right, but it was totally my fault. i treated people like crap. like i didn't think i'd come in here being changed. i didn't think i needed to. >> we didn't know exactly what we were getting ourselves into. i think that all of us got so much more out of it than expected. >> reporter: as the cadets shared hugs and tears while lining up for graduation, in the stands, anxious parents were emotional, too.

adjekai stewart's mother. samantha. if there was something you could say to her right now, what would you say? >> that i will always be there for her no matter what. that my life didn't begin until she came into this world. >> you're going to graduate and do great things. >> reporter: sergeant timothy edwards and all the sergeants who used tough love to help turn these lives around said their good-byes with one final salute. as a testament to the sunburst motto, dream, believe, achieve. >> success is waiting for you, all right? >> reporter: 28 students actually complete hide school in the last five months and received their diplomas. the others will return to their home high schools fully caught up on credits. it's been remarkable. but it's not over yet. for the next 12 months they will have a mentor to guide them on their new journey.
