planes and ships from four countries have joined the hunt for flight 8501. aviation officials cannot explain why the plane vanished from radar screens 40 minutes after takeoff. mark albert is in washington. mark, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. aviation experts tell cbs news that this search is likely to be far easier than the ongoing search for malaysia air flight 370, which disappeared in march, and that's because the waters where this airasia plane disappeared are much, much shallower shallower, only about 150 feet deep, and the area is levelly trafficked. australian search planes have spotted objects in the java sea where airasia plane disappeared. experts do not know if it is wreckage from flight 8501. with help pouring in indonesian officials say it's likely the plane is at the bottom of the

sea. the flight carrying 162 people including 17 children took off for singapore sunday morning. shortly after one of the pilots asked to change a route due to bad weather. the request was denied due to high traffic. the data recorders will help tell what happened next. >> we've got life in the batteries for the next 30 days, maybe, depending upon when the batteries were put into the aircraft, as long as even 90 days. >> indonesia promises a safety review something that is a top priority. relatives still wait for any news, holding onto hope at a crisis center set up at the indonesian airport where the missing plane took off. the u.s.'s seventh fleet, which is based in asia says it stands ready to assist but has not yet

been asked for help. also indonesian authorities have not asked the national transportation safety board, which is based here in washington, for assistance. they're often called to help in international air disasters. lauren? >> mark albert in washington. thank you for that, mark. more than 100 people remain trapped this morning aboard a smoke-filled terry adrift between italy and albania. a fire broke out on the ship more than 24 hours ago. gale-force winds and choppy seas are hampering rescue efforts. passengers say heat from the fire is melting their shoes. alphonso van marsh is in london. alphonso, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. it's been a harrowing two days for the passengers on crew aboard the italian ferry that caught fire early sunday morning. at least one person is dead and authorities are scrambling to rescue those on board. passengers say a fire broke out on the car deck while they were still asleep in their cabins. the first large group of passengers rescued from the ferry boat arrived in southern italy monday morning.

passengers say the fire's suffocating smoke and heat drove them to the ship's upper decks where they were exposed to frigid temperatures driving rain hail and gale-force winds. greek and italian authorities say the weather and rough seas are complicating rescue efforts. smoke from the fire is also making it hard for helicopter crews to airlift passengers from the ship. a medical team and doctor are now on board to assist the more than 100 passengers and crew still on board. ferry passengers from kun industries -- they including greece france italy germany, and here in brittain. they're mostly commuters and families on vacation. lauren? >> alphonso van marsh in london, thank you. police in los angeles are on a citywide tactical alert after a shooting that targeted officers sunday night. one suspect is in custody, and police are searching for a second person. he's considered armed and dangerous. authorities recovered a rifle. no officers were hurt in the shooting, and it's not clear if

any bullets hit their car. this week officials from new york's police unions will meet with the city's police commissioner in an effort to diffuse tensions after the killing of two officers. a deepening rift between rank-and-file police and new york mayor bill de blasio was on display at the funeral for one of the slain officers this weekend. as don dahler reports, tens of thousands attended. >> reporter: tens of thousands of police officers attended, but it was this action by a few hundred that still has people talking. as mayor bill de blasio took to the podium -- >> all of this city is grieving -- >> reporter: -- cops gathered outside turned their backs on the television monitor. on "face the nation" this morning police commissioner bill bright bratton expressed his disappointment.

>> i think to bring issues into that event was very inappropriate. >> reporter: bratton said part of the animosity relates to difficult contract negotiations between police officers and unions. but many resent mayor bill de blasio's comments after a grand jury failed to indict an officer. he said he was astonished by the decision and was worried that his biracial son could come to harm at the hands of the police. pat lynch put the blame for last week's murders on officers ramos and wenjian liu on the mayor's support of anti-police protests. >> that blood on the hands starts on the steps of city hall in the office of the mayor. >> reporter: former mayor rudy giuliani has been a major critic of de blasio's but in this instance he said the officers were worker. >> i do think he should apologize to the police department. i said this day one. i think he'd get this over with if he did it. >> mayor de blasio has expressed

his support for the officers including during officer ramos's funeral service. the funeral for the other officer killed is scheduled for next saturday and because of chinese private customs is expected to be on a much smaller scale. don dahler, cbs news, new york. former president george h.w. bush remains hospitalized in houston this morning. a spokesman said word of his discharge could come soon, but for now doctors want to continue monitoring mr. bush. the 90-year-old was taken by ambulance to methodist hospital tuesday after experiencing shortness of breath. officials say the death toll could rise from a fire at a senior living apartment building near san antonio. five people are confirmed dead in a fire that broke out sunday in the 11-story high-rise. 150 firefighters responded. the cause is under investigation, but it appears to have started on the third floor. >> the third floor hallway is absolutely gutted, the doors are charred, the fire and smoke were communicated throughout the

building, so we're very fortunate that we're not standing in front of you talking about a greater loss of life. >> ten people remain hospitalized. officials say not all of the 216 residents listed as living there are accounted for, but it's also not clear how many were in the building when the fire broke out. on the "cbs moneywatch," playstation goes back online, and the movie "the interview" sets a record for sony. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with those stories and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. here on wall street today, investors start another short holiday week in record territory. last week the dow gained 776 points, at an all-time high. the s&p was up 86, also a record high and the nasdaq rose 24 points. asian stocks were mixed as the search continues for missing flight airasia 8501.
