the sea. the multieffort search is focusing on the sea, and there's reports of possible debris spotted, but nothing confirmed. >> the plane left indonesia sunday morning for singapore, less than an hour into the flight, they vanished and all contact was lost. it is the second flight to disappear over southeast asian waters this year. elizabeth palmer has coverage from london. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's been more than 36 hours since that air asia flight vanished, and investigators do not know what happened to it. family members clung to hope as long as they could needing to believe that no news was good news but search aircraft reported debris in the area where the plane disappeared, and the head of indonesia search and rescue says his working hypothesis is that the plane is at the bottom of the sea. air asia flight 8501 took off from indonesia's second largest

city, surbaya, for singapore. over the sea, the pilot asked control to climb from 32,000 to 38,000 feet to avoid storm clouds. minutes later, sometime between 6:17 and 6:24 with no distress call the air bus 320 disappeared from radar. the pilot had 20,000 hours of flying experience. on board were six more crew including a french co-pilot and 155 passengers most from indonesia, but there were also three south koreans, a malation and a britain, 16 and a 2-year-old are among the missing. tony hernandez is the ceo of the budget air airline. >> until we have a full investigation of what went wrong, we can't speculate. we don't want to speculate until we find the aircraft, know what

went wrong look into it and see if we need to improve anything, but it's speculation at the moment. that's premature to talk at the moment. >> reporter: there's few facts to work with until the plane's found, combing the presumed crash site and find wreckage that contains answers. some of the boats are, in fact warships, military vessels. they are looking east of indonesia, and they report now that the weather and the visibility are good for the search to continue. >> liz, thank you very much. 17 of the 162 people on board are children. as you heard, passengers' families are waiting desperately for any news this morning. we are in washington checking the history of the missing plane. jeff, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the missing plane was a relatively new air bus 320 delivered and put in service in late 2008. the jet is typically used for

shorter flights like the two hour trip it was supposed to complete on sunday. at the moment the flight vanished from radar, it was at cruising altitude the safest part of the flight passing through heavily traveled air space. data shows several planes in the same area before the air asia flight disappeared. there are a number of things that could have happened to this aircraft. they'll be interviews from the pilots in the area at the time and talking to the air traffic controllers. >> the jet, an air bus 320, logged 23,000 hours of flight time over 13,600 flights. according to a boeing safety study in august 8320s have the lowest accident rates in the industry, and air asia is widely considered to have a good safety record. the incident has drawn similarities to malation airline flight 370 which investigators say disappeared over the

southern indian ocean in march with 239 people on board. unlike that plane, this flight disappeared over the relatively shallow sea, which only reaches depths of 150 feet. >> we're going to have a much easier time of finding the debris field and then u.ly finding out where those black boxes could rest on the ocean floor. given it's a much more shallow area that we're looking at. so far the ntsb has not sent a team to indonesia, but the agency says they are monitoring the search for the plane and ready to help if needed. nora? >> jeff, thank you, former ntsb chairman is with us now president and ceo of the national safety counsel. good morning debra. >> morning. >> you think about the southeast asia dealing with three airline disasters in the past year. what do you think happened here? >> no i'd sigh this is incredibly unprecedented to see

three aircraft losses coming from the same part of the world. but i think in this case it's a very different situation, and investigators will look closely at the flight track, last communication, and target the debris field and recorders. >> what about the issue of severe weather? could that have caused a plane of this size to come down? >> typically we don't see large commercial aircraft taken down by severe weather. it is a factor when you talk about smaller aircrafts in thunderstorms, in-flight breakups, but we don't see that with commercial large transport category aircrafts. >> there is discussion of ice accumulation that interviews with the air speed indicators chance which is what happened to air france in 2009. based on what we know about what the pilot said and the area they were in seem like a theory here? >> sure. i think investigators will look

at every theory and air france showed us there could be a malfunction as far as tubes icing over and not giving reliable communications back into the cockpit, but one of the challenges here is not just the equipment, but it's how the pilots in the aircraft are responding to any equipment failures or anomalies. they'll look at that quickly. >> you mentioned that and the sad reality is we had a profile of aviation disasters and heard distress signals. do we know in this case if they could send an alert that something wrong was happening? >> so far the information we have from the authorities on the ground is they asked for clearance to a higher altitude. there was not any distress signal that was sent that's been reported at this point. i will tell you, for pilots they have responsibilities, and they are aifuate, navigate and communicate, and communication in emergencies is really the last thing they are foe e kusing on. they have to handle the airplane

and make sure that that is their first priority, and so it's not necessarily a surprise if you're in an emergency that they are not theirnarrating play by play air traffic. >> i have a question how does a flight just disappear from a radar? how does that happen? what changes is the airline industry making to transmit data? >> one of the biggest issues today is after the disappearance of mh 370 is why we don't have beater tracking of aircraft in dead spaces. >> so many thoughts and prayers with the family members, thank you so much. >> well the search for flight 8501 is raising flight 370. this is why things are different this time. that's ahead. a developing story from los angeles this morning. two gunmen opened fire on police patrol unprovoke. part of los angeles is under

tactical alert. they were fired on in southern language, returned fire and one is in custody, the other on the run. none of the officers involved in the incident in los angeles were hurt. >> and new york police are winning more high profile support after the murder of two officers in their police patrol car. giants' coach tom cofflin wore an nypd hat with the eagles and players had sharts that said peace. some officers feel they are not getting support from city hall. we have silent protests highlighting the growing tensions. good norng morning. >> reporter: good morning. the support was lukewarm at best, but weeks of antipolice brutality protests and the mayor's comments about the nypd pushed the relationship to the breaking point. ♪ ♪ police coast to coast, some 25,000 strong turned the streets of queens into a sea of

blue saturday in memory of ramos. >> our hearts are aching today. >> reporter: as the mayor addressed the mourners inside christ tabernacle church many officers outside turned away. the new york police commissioner bratton criticized the issues on "meet the nation." >> i think it was inappropriate, and i do not support it. he was the mayor of new york there remitting the citizens of new york to express their remorse of the death. >> reporter: even who thinks he owes an apology found it distasteful. >> the mayor of the city of new york should not be blamed for the murder much those police officers. those issues should not have been injected. it was wrong. but i do believe the mayor should apologize to the new york city police department. >> reporter: the gesture is a reoccurring thing. after ramos and his partner were killed he got a similar reception, and friday a group of officers claimed responsibility for this banner

flying over the city. >> shut it down. >> reporter: many believe he stoked the climate to be hostile to the nypd when he said he fear for the life for his biracial son. >> we have to train him like everyone has overed decades. take special care with any protection he has with the police officers. >> reporter: he called on a halt on protests it was ignored by demonstrators who marched on a precinct in brooklyn. >> what do we want? >> justice. >> when do we want it? >> now. >> reporter: the funeral for officer lui is scheduled for this weekend. they were promoted to rank of detective, and ramos was made ferry catches fire on the coast of greece on sunday, and 4 14 people were rescued, and five people died. rough seas hampered the rescue

efforts from the beginning. a cargo ship reached an italian port. we are tracking the developments from london alfons good morning. >> good morning. headed from greece to italy with 480 passengers and crew on board when the fire started. rescue crews and helicopters hovering over the sea lifted stranded passengers to safety from the top deck of the crippled ferry. as people tried to stay foraway from the fire below. one rescued? a pregnant woman who clutched her two children as they were raised to safety. coast guard boats hampered by 16 foot waves, and many taken off the boat were brought to the hospital, some treated for hype therm ya. there was a video showing how the intense flames gutted the interior of the ship. the fire broke out just before dawn on sunday while many on board were sleeping. it reportedly started on the

ferry' lower level car deck. one passenger told a greek tv station, everyone was outside because the ship was full of smoke. he described the floors as boiling beneath them. others called relatives to keep them updated. >> he thought the fire started on the vehicle deck. it's worse for us because we're standing out here in the pouring rain and thunder and lightning, and we really just don't know exactly what is going to happen. >> reporter: italian officials say they are launching a criminal investigation into how the fire started, and passengers on that ferry came from countries including greece france italy, and here in britain. jeff? >> thanks very much. one part of america's longest war is officially over. this morning, a flag lowering ceremony sunday marked the end of u.s. combat possessions in afghanistan. in 13 years, more than 2200 american troops were killed in

the fighting. in a statement, president obama said the u.s. disrupted terrorist plots and saved countless american lives. 18,000 international troops including nearly 11,000 americans will remain in afghanistan helping to train troops there. remain in afghanistan helping to train troops there. >> firefighters are being praised for preventing a tragedy from being much worse. some are recovering after a fire in san antonio, texas. vicente arenas spoke to a 92-year-old survivor who was determined to leave on her own. >> reporter: they broke windows and used ladders to evacuate residents and smoke billowed through the building. 260 people live in the senior living complex. >> e just said, lord, help us.

>> reporter: this 92-year-old was in her tenth up. minutes later she couldn't breathe. >> i put my nose on the oechlk the window and i found a tiny crack and i put my nose in there and i could feel that my throat was clearing. >> so that was your breath of fresh air. >> that was my breathf fresh ai son. firefighters tried to carry her ny out to ladder but she said she would walk. >> he kept saying we're holding the ladder and i said, i know you are but i want to hold onto it myself. >> the fire gutted the third floor, killing five and injuring ten. >> we're very fortunate that we're not standing upon it talking about greater loss of life. >> reporter: it was a chilly 39 degrees when residents escaped with very few cloektss and were taken to a temporary shelter. she's staying with her son. >> do you feel lucky you made it out of there? >> i feel a second chance of

conference today to discuss the search for a new head coach after the niners win over arizona yesterday. the team officially announced they will part ways with the coach. he is expected to be the next coach of the university of michigan. perhaps tomorrow, by the way, the falcons and jets fired their coaches today, too. this is the last day to apply for federal aid for people suffering property damage in the south napa earthquake. fema will shut down the local assistance center on first street at 6 tonight. the agency said it's helped 2500 home owners and businesses since that august earthquake. traffic and weather coming up after the break.
