indonesian authorities say debris and bodies have been found in the area of the java sea where the missing airasia jet was last seen. congressman michael grimm said he's resigning just days after pleading guilty to tax evasion. and the autopsy of a victim in an l.a. police shooting sparks more protests. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, december 30th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning, i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. this morning, we have breaking news in the search for the missing airasia jetliner. indonesia said its navy has started recovering bodies floating in the water where the plane lost contact sunday.

the head of search and rescue says they are 95% sure they've located flight 8501. mark albert is in washington. mark, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. indonesian authorities tell the associated press those bodies did not have life jackets on. other items recovered luggage and a possible emergency exit doors were just five or six miles from the plane's last known location. >> reporter: crews searching for airasia flight 8501 are looking to recover red, white items off the borneo island. what appears to be life jackets are also seen. the items are most likely items from the plane. indonesia authorities have reported they've spotted victims in the water. aircraft from several countries are taking part in the aerial search including australia. >> australia has sent two p-3

orions in an area by the island as requested by the indonesian authorities. >> reporter: the u.s. is part of the efforts. "u.s.s. sampson" has joined planes and ships which had been expanded to cover land. the missing plane with 162 people on board vanished after the plane's captain requested to fly at a higher altitude because of bad weather. the request was denied because of heavy air traffic. in addition to weather investigators will also look at whether the plane was going too slow mechanical error and if the pilots may have reacted to an incident on board. airasia has agreed to fly relatives of the missing over the search area. shortly after the bodies were found, the airline's ceo tweeted, quote my heart is filled with sadness for all. the families of 8501 on behalf

of airasia, my condolences to all. words cannot express how sorry i am. lauren. >> mark albert in washington. allen pizzey joins us on the phone with the breaking developments. he's in the indonesian city of surabaya where flight 8501 took off on sunday. allen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. well, it's quite a scene here because many of the relatives of the victims have been staying here at the airport in a room. when the first pictures of a body floating in the water were broadcast on television. there was a monitor inside with some people going hysterical. local journalists outside looking on were disgusted that it should had been done. nonetheless, it was done. some of the pictures we have seen helicopter crewmen being lowered into the body to recover a body. we understand at least three

have been winched up to helicopters and an indonesian navy ship. a co-pilot of a hercules said when they first spotted bodies they thought the people were waving help and suddenly realized that these are dead bodies and not survivors. earlier today, relatives, representing a group, about five members representing relatives were flown by indonesian military or plane over the spot where more or less the plane was thought to have gone down at that stage. so that they can pray over it. not that they could see anything, but that they could at least pray. and i'm being told that tomorrow airasia and possibly the indonesian military will fly even more of them over the site. there's also been a brief report that one search and rescue plane saw what is described as a shadow on the seafloor which may or may not be the plane. the only good news in all of this is that where the plane went down and where the debris

is being found about six to ten miles away from the last contact of the plane, the scene is relatively shallow so getting down to get wreckage won't be as difficult. to find wreckage won't be as difficult as it was for the malaysian airliner that crashed into south asia and has not been found yet. >> allen pizzey, thank you. also this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly fire that sank a ferry from greece to italy. at least ten people are dead in the disaster. more than 400 passengers were rescued by boat and helicopter. survivors described chaos and confusion on the ship during the 30-hour ordeal. searchers are scouring nearby waters for other possible victims. the passenger list was inaccurate making it difficult to know exactly how many people were on board. a new theory with the sony hack attack may be gaining traction with investigators. a silicon valley security firm briefed the company monday about

its research first reported by our ben tracy more than a week ago. they say the evidence points not to north korea, but to hackers who got help from someone recently laid off at sony. >> the primary piece of malware that targets sony contains specific server addresses, user names, credentials and even digital certificates that could only have been obtained from an insider or a recent insider at sony. >> a department spokesman said the u.s. stands behind the fbi analysis and remains confident north korea is responsible for the attack. congressman michael grimm plans to resign from office next week saying he can't give the job his full attention. the new york republican pleaded guilty to tax evasion last week. he faces up to 30 months in prison. the congressman gained notoriety in january when a camera caught him physically threatening a reporter inside the u.s. capitol. one of the most powerful members of congress is on the

defensive for a speech he delivered more than a decade ago. it's not what steve scalise said that's drawing scrutiny, but his audience. wyatt andrews reports. >> reporter: steve scalise is the house majority w.h.i.p., the third highest ranking republican. but in may 2002 his office confirms that scalise when serving in the louisiana legislature, spoke to a convention of the white supremacist group called euro. a group devoted to what they called white civil rights and whose president was david duke the former leader of the ku klux klan. according to a statement from his office, scalise has never been affiliated with the abhorrent group. he was speaking on slush funds that wasted millions of taxpayer

dollars and his opposition to a proposed tax increase. in louisiana political circles scalise is known as a prolific speaker but the euro group's affiliation with david duke and its anti-jewish and anti-minority issues are promoted and well-known in 2002. scalise's office insists he had no idea he was speaking to a david duke group and would not have gone to that speech had he known. but for a republican party trying to reach out to minorities this year this could hurt. wyatt andrews, cbs news, washington. the release of an autopsy of a man killed by los angeles police is sparking new protests. demonstrators linked arms and blocked traffic on a freeway monday. as john blackstone reports they're upset about the death of an unarmed man at the hands of officers in august. >> hands up don't shoot! >> reporter: for months demonstrators in los angeles have been demanding the release of ezell ford's autopsy.

according to police the 25-year-old was shot when he tried to take an officer's gun. the autopsy shows ford was hit three times at close range. two fatal shots in his right side and back, a third shot struck his arm. los angeles police chief charlie beck. >> the officer encountered a violent struggle. the officer ended up on his back with mr. ford on top of him. with mr. ford in control of his pistol, his uniform pistol. the officer drew his backup gun and reached over mr. ford's back and shot mr. ford in very close proximity. >> reporter: ford was described by his family as bipolar and schizophrenic, a witness contradicts a description of a struggle. >> he put his hands like that, they wrestled him to the ground, a lot went off. and they shot him again. and another two seconds later, they shot him again. >> reporter: ford's family has filed a $45 million wrongful death suit against lapd and los angeles.

the suit claims the police officers were familiar with ford and aware that he was mentally ill. steven larimer is the family's attorney. >> they knew this man was unarmed. they knew he was basically helpless and harmless. and yet, they proceeded to attack him, bring him to the ground and shoot and kill him. >> the autopsy is one element to be used in three separate investigations now under way in ford's death. the two officers involved, both veterans of the gang squad, have been taken off street duty. john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. this morning, los angeles police are looking for the suspect in an ambush of a police car. two men opened fire on the cruiser as it was patrolling sunday night. there were two officers inside. they were not injured. one suspect is under arrest. new york city police commissioner bill bratton and bill de blasio will meet. with leaders of the city's

the irs says taxpayers can start filing their 2014 tax returns on january 20th. millions of taxpayers file returns during the first weeks of the year so they can get quick refund. that filing date with last-minute congressional changes extended more than 50 tax breaks. access to g mail in china was blocked it may be due to the government's plan to block access. g-mail is popular with chinese to avoid government monitoring. google reports that the e-mail service fell friday and almost zero on saturday with a partial return monday. the new york-based burger chain shake shack will be going public. shake shack filed for initial public offering and is hoping to race up to $100 million. the company plans to use the cash to open more restaurants and renovate its 53 existing stores. and alaska airlines is

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports, today the university of michigan is expected to announce that jim harbaugh is the new football coach. harbaugh arrived in detroit yesterday. he has spent four years as the coach of the san francisco 49ers. harbaugh reportedly agreed to his alma mater for a deal worth $39 million over six years. detroit lions defensive tack ndamukong suh is appealing a one-game suspension. suh was suspended for stepping on packers quarterback aaron rodgers' left leg twice. if the suspension stands suh will miss sunday's playoff game against dallas. the nfl coaching merry-go-round is under way.

three teams fired head coaches yesterday. the jets dismissed rex ryan after six seasons. the bears who missed the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons fired marc trestman. and atlanta showed coach mike smith the door. in college hoops second-ranked duke remains undefeated. freshman julio okafor led the season with a season high 24 points. freshman jones as duke beat toledo. 86-59 and improving. and a coach is being disciplined after he hit west virginia players during monday's liberty bowl. michael richardson is seen striking west virginia players twice during the first half of yesterday's game. richardson was sent home early. school officials say further action will be decided soon. a&m beat west virginia 45 to 37. when we return another look at this morning's top stories and presidential party crasher.

bush might be released from a houston hospital as early as today, a spokesman for the 41st president said his breathing has returned to normal but has said that he would stay in the hospital pending his doctor's decision. president obama apologized for disrupting a wedding in hawaii. the president called the couple after a round of golf caused them to move their wedding to another part of the course on a military base. the president told the two army captains that he felt terrible because no one told him. the bride and groom said they were happy to make the change. and in florida, a blind man and his dog, his guide dog, are back together this morning. the german shepherd named renata went missing sunday. her owner offered a $1,000 reward because he couldn't get around without her. a neighbor taking care of renata returned her. the two have been happily reunited.
