millions are thawing out this morning after celebrations around the country to welcome the new year. philadelphia hosted its annual fireworks show over the delaware river. people also crowded around baltimore's chilly inner harbor -- ring, rather, to ring in 2015, but wendy gillette shows us the biggest celebration in times square where about a million people watched the ball drop. >> reporter: the glittering waterford crystal ball dropped over times square, ushering in 2015 for the estimated 1 million people on hand to watch. they came from all over the world. where are you from? >> saudi arabia. >> reporter: most arrived to secure their viewing spots earlier in the morning. after passing through security revelers were confined to massive pens where they couldn't leave, even to use the bathroom. >> i haven't had anything to drink since this morning.

>> reporter: officers and bomb-sniffing dogs were on patrol to keep everyone safe. it was also a cold night. the temperature felt like it was in the teens and there was nowhere to get warm. >> i am freezing. i'm from florida, born and raised. i'm not made for the north. >> reporter: big acts like taylor swift and o.a.r. headlined this year's new year's party. shortly after midnight the streets cleared out and an army of street cleaners moved in, scooping up and carting away about 50 tons of trash. well, new year's celebrations in china turned deadly after a stampede killed dozens. it happened just before midnight local time. 36 people died in the disaster at shanghai's historic waterfront. nearly 50 more were hurt. the official cause of the stampede is still under investigation, but one witness

said people rushed after coupons that looked like dollar bills. and spotty weather conditions continue to hamper the search for airasia flight 8501, this and its victims. crews hope to find the wreckage soon to find out what made the flight go down. tara mergener is in washington. tara, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. as soon as they can locate the wreckage, the sooner they can figure out what actually happened. officials say the their highest priority is recovering the victims. more bodies and numbered coffins were flown to surabaya today for identification. there were 162 people aboard the two-hour surabaya to singapore flight which disappeared from radar about halfway into the trip early sunday. so far at least 70 bodies have been recovered including a 22-year-old flight attendant wearing her red uniform. her father said the young woman was on a one-way flight and then was going on vacation. the bodies are being stored in

these refrigerated containers until they're autopsied and identified. relatives gather to wait and provide blood samples for dna to help identify the victims. wind and heavy rain today in the java sea continue to hamper searchers in their mission. deitchers are on stand by in. survey on the ocean floor has been flown in to help find the exact location of the wreckage. on new year's eve people who gathered in jakarta to ring in the new year also paused to pray for those. they hope once they find the black boxes they'll have some answers. and experts say it may take at least a week to find those black boxes. anne-marie? >> all right. tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. crippling cold weather is taking over many parts of the country on this new year's day. temperatures in denver hit the single digits. some in the southwest are digging out from snow. bigad shaban is in pasadena,

california, where one winter storm turned violent. >> reporter: 8-foot waves and winds of 40 miles per hour beached several ships off catalina island off the california coast. two people were killed including a harbor patrol officer who jumped into the water tuesday night when his boat nearly crashed into the rocks. >> then i suddenly heard a whole bunch of screaming really loud, eerie screaming. one went running up and said he went over, he went over. >> reporter: miles east of los angeles snow blanketed parts of san bernardino county leaving 2 dozen stranded. drivers tried to navigate through near whiteout conditions in new mexico. in arizona football fans headed to the fiesta bowl were stuck on snow-covered roads for hours, and in pasadena swirling winds sent tents flying as crews were setting up for the rose bowl and

parade. morning lows in the 30s could be coldest in the parade's 126-year history. cheryl hague traveled from north carolina to claim her spot early. how long will your group actually camp out here along the parade route? >> believe it or not, we'll be here at least 24 hours. >> reporter: warming stations will be set up near the area so revelers can thaw out after stopping to smell the roses. bigad shaban cbs news, pasadena, california. an appeals court in egypt today ordered the retrial for three journalists working for al jazeera. the ruling cancels jail sentences for the three men. they were convicted of aiding the outlawed muslim brotherhood and publishing false news about egypt. north korean leader kim jong-un is calling for improved relations with south korea. in his address he's open to senior-level public talks or a summit with the south.

north korea will continue strengthen its military among international tensions. and palestinian officials want to pursue charges of war crimes against israel this morning in their latest quest for statehood. the palestinians are joining the international criminal court. it's in response to tuesday's vote by the u.n. security council shooting down a resolution to establish a palestinian state. the united states calls the move counterproductive. israel's prime minister promises, quote, retaliatory steps. nearly a thousand migrants are safe this morning after being rescued from an abandoned cargoship. a helicopter lowered members of italy's coast guard onto the ship to save it. officials say smugglers put it on auto pilot intending it to crash -- intending for it to crash into the italian coast. authorities are now interviewing the passengers to see if the smugglers may be among them. and after the hacking attack on sony pictures entertainment, many other companies are worried about similar breaches. now the fbi is investigating if

some have gone too far in responding with what's called revenge hacking. jan crawford reports. >> reporter: after the u.s. government announced in 2012 that iran was behind hacking some of the largest u.s. banking institutions, the banks met with federal officials where according to "bloomberg news," an individual from jpmorgan floated a plan. they hit back by taking down the iranian servers. >> there was a lot of legal questions that came up, but somebody did shut down the servers and the fbi is trying to figure out who did it. >> reporter: that's because under a 30-year-old federal law, companies cannot take any preemptive action. they can't retrieve stolen information, not even stop an impending attack. in 2013 target hackers compromised up to 40 million debit accounts and stole

overnight in oakland, california. police added patrols to have more officers out on the streets. in st. louis two people were arrested for blocking downtown traffic. in boston, a die-in was staged by protesters in front of the public library. the demonstrations were against the deaths of unarmed black men by police in ferguson, missouri, and new york. and wall street is closed on new year's day after finishing with another big year for stocks. the dow was up 7% for the year. the s&p 500 gained more than 11%. and the nasdaq rose 13% for 2014. volkswagen is recalling about 38,000 cars because of a fuel week that can cause fires. they're recalling 2014/2015 model years of volkswagen, beetle, and passat and 2015 models of the gulf gti.

owners can bring their cars to the dealer to have their fuel system inspected. in the new year there will be an expected increase in pay. it's not the $15-an-hour wage increase that many have been calling for. almost half of the states are increasing minimum wage today. lauren lyster reports. >> reporter: from fast food restaurant to retail store, millions of minimum wage workers are getting a pay bump in the new year including jade anderson. >> i've been a cashier 20-plus years. it will impact me and my family, so that's good news. >> reporter: at least 23 states will have a higher minimum wage in 2015. in missouri the wage is going up to $7.65 an hour. in maryland it's $8. and workers in washington will get $9.37 an hour. add in previous wage hikes and 29 will be paying above the federal level of $7.25 an hour. but many workers want more. nationwide protests in 2014

cold today. in sports, we begin with college football and the orange bowl. on the last play of the first half, eighth ranked mississippi state launched a hail mary pass that works, but georgia tech scored on its first four possessions of the second half rushing for a total of 453 yards to beat mississippi state, 49-34. the peach bowl was a route. sixth ranked tcu scored on its second play of the game with a trick play. quarterback trevone boykin threw a long lateral to wide receiver colby and he threw a pass to aaron green for the score. tcu ended up crushing ninth ranked mississippi, 42-3. in the fiesta bowl, jay ajayi ran for 134 yards including a 56-yard run. 21st ranked boise state beat

on "gilmore girls." he was 71 years old. men were building a wall when they saw a car hit a wall and burst into flames. the driver was trapped inside by the airbag. the workers used a sledgehammer to knock out a window and reach him. >> the man was trying to come out backward and i told him to turn around because we couldn't get him by his feet. he turned around and we pulled him out. >> the driver was hospitalized with only a broken leg. after the rescue the brick layers went back to work. and a rare ryehinoceros has a stuffy nose. a vet took samples from the 40-year-old rhino named nola and gave her an injection of antibiotics. #la is one of five northern white rhinos left in the world. and in key west florida, it was the annual dachshund walk.

in 2014 gas prices dropped to five-year lows. will they stay low in the year ahead. >> jill wagner looks at that and other trends for consumers. >> reporter: $2 a gallon gas is now a reality in much of the united states. aaa predicts prices at the pump will fall about ten more cents in the next few weeks before creeping up in the spring. it could cost a little less to fly too. industry experts expect tickets to drop up to 5% in 2015. but americans will continue to spend more on food. >> what i think we're going to see this year in 2015 is grocery prices on the rise. >> phil lempert is the editor of
