this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, january 9th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there is breaking new this morning in the hunt for two brothers suspected in the attack on a french newspaper that killed 12 people. a french security official said the suspects have stolen a car this morning in a town about 30 miles northeast of paris. elaine cobb is in paris with the latest. elaine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the massive man hunt for the two fugitive brothers has shifted closer to paris. there are reports they're holed up at a business near the charles de gaulle airport and they're holding hostages. some media report one hostage has been killed in a shoot-out. they've denied that. two runways have been closed at the airport amid fears that the brothers have a rocket lawn cher. the cabinet has been meeting with francois hollande. the interior minister said after that cabinet meeting only that a

police operation is under way. authorities in france are focusing their hunt for two heavily armed brothers north of paris. police are searching homes and closing roads in countryside towns in fear of reports they robbed a gas station and later fled to the woods on foot. authorities say 30-year-old shareef kouachi and his 34-year-old brother said entered the "charlie hebdo" offices wednesday and killed 12 people. whether that was their motivation is still unclear. french media describes them as brothers of algerian descent who were raised in foster care and became drawn to jihad in brotherhood. there are reports his older brother was linked to a yemeni terrorist network and traveled there for training in 2011. staff at the weekly "charlie hebdo" are already back at work.

they moved to temporary offices at a major newspaper here in paris and they've promised a massive print run next week of 1 million copies. >> i do feel proud of these people, the fact that they were willing to stand up. it's just a different breed in the small world of cartoonists. >> reporter: the lights of the famed i tell tower went dark last night in memory of the victims of the terror attack. today "charlie hebdo" will be made an honorary citizen of the city. and security remains tight here in paris as parisians are still on edge knowing that those two killers are still on the loose. anne-marie? >> all right. elaine cob in paris. thank you very much elaine. this morning we're learning about the two suspects in the paris newspaper massacre. the men were identified by an i.d. card that was left in the getaway car. they were well known to officials. and as elaine reported, heavily

armed security forces are conducting house-to-house searches. president obama wrote in a condolence book at the french embassy, terror is no match for freedom. next week the newspaper "charlie hebdo" will publish a special edition. and it's another morning of bone-chilling temperatures. across much of the country, record-breaking cold including high temperatures in the single digits and below zero windchills. in minnesota it's the cold, the snow, and high winds. drivers face blizzard-like whiteout conditions in many parts of the state. there were hundreds of crashes, and the high in minneapolis today is expected to be just 3 degrees. the freezing air has also been hammering the east coast. fountains froze in new york city where the windchill hit minus 6. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the dangerous cold spell. >> we're watching the same system that quickly moved through the west created those blizzard conditions yesterday,

now bringing some snow across the northeast. this may bring an issue for places like boston suburbs and outside of new york city. al band of snow, not a lot of it but not at the right time is going to slow things down. snowfall not terribly impressive, but one place we'll watch this is behind the great lakes, watching the buffalo area and up toward the tug hill plateau. lake-effect snow warnings are here through the morning hours and saturday morning talking 2 to 4 feet, really more than that around tug hill, but really watching that commute in and around buffalo, especially as that band shifts heads toward the evening, plus winds gusting to around 40 miles an hour. more cold here. single digits in chicago. the warmth remains but meanwhile seattle at 50. not too bad for january. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. this morning indonesia's search crews heard pings that could be from the flight data recorders of airasia flight 8501.

the pinks were heard in an area where the jet's tail is located. divers are trying to locate the so-called black boxes. four more bodies have been recovered from the sea floor, bringing the total to 48. there were 162 people on board the airbus a-320 when it crashed into the java sea. well today president obama will propose a plan to offer two free years of community college to most students in the u.s. mr. obama will outline his plan in tennessee, a state that began offering free tuition for college this year. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. under the president's plan, students will be able to earn the first half of a bachelor's degree or be able to acquire the skills -- technical skills needed to get a job. now, the white house says if all 50 states participate, as many as 9 million could benefit, eich of them saving about $3,800 per year.

the president outlined the details of the plan in a video posted last night. >> put simply what i'd like to do is see the first two years of community college free for everybody who's willing to work for it. that's right, free for everybody who's willing to work for it. it's something that we can accomplish, and it's something that will train our work force so that we can compete with anybody in the world. >> now, to qualify, students would have to attend community college at least halftime and also maintain a grade point average of 2.5. that's just about a c-plus. also make steady progress toward a degree at participating schools, but also have to meet certain academic standards with fully transferable credits. the federal government would pay three-quarters of the costs, and states would cover the last quarter of the cost but the white house did not detail how it would be paid for. also congress would have to approve this plan and a

spokesman for republican house speaker john boehner said with no details on the cost, it really sounds more like a talking point than a real plan. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. jury selection begins this morning in the murder trial of former nfl star aaron hernandez. the one-time patriots tight end is accused of killing oden lloyd, a semipro player who was dating his sister. that will be in massachusetts. he faces a separate murder charge in boston. and nfl owners are lining up behind commissioner roger goodell this morning. an investigation finds goodell and the league botched their handling of the ray rice case. the 96-page report from former fbi director robert mueller also pointed to a weak domestic abuse policy, but it sees no evidence anyone in the league saw graphic video of rice hitting his fiancee before it landed on the internet. cleveland police are facing new scrutiny this morning in the

death of tamir rice. newly released public surveillance video shows the actions of the officers minutes after they shot the minor. kris van cleave has our report. >> reporter: newly released video shows tamir rice's sister racing toward the scene after the officer shot her 12-year-old brother. another officer is seen pushing her to the ground and handcuffing her and putting her in the patrol car next to her brother. >> i have never seen anything so cruel. she had a front row view of her brother dying and she's helpless. >> reporter: a shorter version of the surveillance video was released in november days after the shooting and ended with the patrol officer timothy lohman shooting rice. lohman said he shot rice as the 12-year-old was reaching for something in his waistband. it turned out to be a toy gun. the extended 30-minute version shows the officers standing around without trying to help rice. an fbi agent in the area on a different case began first aid four minutes later.

we are continuing to following developments in the search for the two suspects in the deadly shooting at a paris newspaper. the men were spotted this morning northeast of paris and now a tense confrontation with police is unfolding. elaine cobb is in paris with the latest. elaine, what can you tell us? >> reporter: there are reports that at least one hostage is being held by the brothers in a factory near the charles da goal airport. one says they have been killed but a paris office has denied that. the french interior ministry will only confirm a police operation is under way in the

attack. but there's still a lot of details that the police are unwilling to share with the media. we heard they were sighted in a town in northern france. police are undergoing a sweep across the area searches along the road. they were spotted at gas station at one point and there's conflicting reports whether or not they abandoned the car and this morning there are leads that they're holding a hostage near the charles de gaulle airport which is north of paris.

die within two years. >> the fact that cassandra is a minor does nothing -- >> reporter: lawyers argue that the 17-year-old was mature enough to choose how her cancer should be treated. attorney mike taylor. >> we don't think maturity falls upon us the day of our 18th birthday. not to be flip about it but the constitution doesn't fall upon us on our 18th birthday. minors have rights as well. >> reporter: a court ordered cassandra to take treatments in november. twoof treatments she ran away. the state took temporary custody. she's now confined a hospital and is received chemo. she has the support of her mother who calls chemo toxic and poison. >> what other forms does she want in terms of treatment? >> we haven't gotten that far yet because she was pulled away. she may not be able to have children. it's documented. it's in black and white. >> even if there's a good chance
