2015 golden globe. this is the "cbs morng ne this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, january 12th, 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. a break threw this morning in the investigation into the crash of airasia flight 8501. indonesian navy divers retrieved one of the plane's so-called black boxes. they located the other one too. don champion is here in new york with the details. don, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. the flight data recorder was recovered from under a piece of the plane's wing. the cockpit voice recorder was located not far away in the java sea. this is new video of the data recorder. it was shone at a press conference this morning. now, once information is downloaded from the instrument, it will detail how fast the plane was going and how it was performing before the crash. the second box will reveal the final conversations between the plane's captain and co-pilot. also this weekend, crews recovered the plane's tail from the water.

divers faced blinding conditions and strong waves as they search for parts from the plane. airasia flight 8501 crashed on december 28, nearly halfway in its journey, killing all 162 people on board. the plane dropped off of radar four minutes after pilots were denied permission to change altitude. there was stormy weather in the area at the time. so far only 48 bodies have been pulled from the water and the main section of the plane has yet to be found. once the other box is recovered both boxes will be sent to jakarta. investigators say it could take up to two weeks to download the information. >> don champion in new york. thank you for the latest on that. it is going to be a slick morning, meanwhile, for drivers commuting from the midwest to new england. a large winter storm is spreading freezing rain, ice, snow from missouri to massachusetts. roads and sidewalks have already begun to freeze. poor travel conditions are

expected for much of the day. parts of upstate new york got hammered with up to 4 feet of snow. the snow was accompanied by howling winds and near whiteout conditions. meteorologist josh rubenstein of our los angeles station kcbs is following the storm. >> we've got some nasty weather for the midwest and east coast right now. big cold front right now facinge stretching all the way from indiana to the northeast right now. you can see where we have that snow and that icy combination of rain and snow. that iceyey mix is going to make travel very treacherous all the way from indiana into the heart of ohio as well. it's going to make travel hard. you're seeing where the divide is. you're seeing plenty of snow from chicago into michigan. lake-effect snow piling on into the western side of michigan. now, we're also looking at stormy weather down through the carolinas as well.

this is surging up through the sukt south. this is all going to cast a nasty spell. futurecast shows us how the snow is going to move right through washington a new york city, 9:00 in the morning getting hit hard with rain and snow and then finally things start to dry out by the afternoon. >> that was josh rubenstein of kcbs in los angeles. today's storm will be followed by much colder temperatures. today in france president francois hollande will chair a crisis meeting on last week's terrorist attacks. a key question. why were no militants able to launch the deadly attacks? today's meeting follows the national outpouring of emotion solidarity and defiance. it's estimated that nearly 4 million people marched throughout france at anti-terrorism rallies. up to 1.6 million in paris alone. meanwhile a new video shows a terrorist who took hostages in a kosher market pledging allegiance to isis. police are searching for his partner, but it's believed she fled last week and is in syria.

france remains on high alert. elaine cobb is in paris. good morning, elaine. >> reporter: good morning. france is waking up to a new sense of unity and solidarity. voters of the giant rally in paris are all over the front pages with headlines, "united for freedom," "liberty on the move," and "we are one people." the french are calling it their biggest rally ever. more than a million people crowded into the public square. it took them nearly two hours to move them all out along three separate routes to the finishing point. they waved giant pencils in the air and sang "charlie, charlie," and sang the french "national anthem." at the head of the march, families of the 17 victims of last week's attacks as well as surviving journalists and cartoonists from "charlie hebdo," the satirical newspaper

that was the scene of the first shooting wednesday. president francois hollande greeted each of them, sharing a few words or an emotional hug. there was international unity, too, with leaders from more than 30 countries joining president hollande at the head of the march. it was an interesting mix that included israel ease benjamin netanyahu and palestinian leader mahmoud abbas and also german chancellor angela merkel and england's david cameron. only the u.s. was missing from the lineup. they say they feel better after the rally. that last week's defiance helped to heal some of the wounds of the past few days. but one wound that might not heal so easily, we just heard that secretary kerry will come to paris friday for talks on international security. he said that was the earliest he could get here. lauren? >> elaine cobb in paris, thank you.

we know one terrorist made phone calls from the kosher market asking friends to follow in his footsteps. next week the white house will hold a conference on violent extremism. julianna goldman reports on the threat of terrorist strikes here in the u.s. >> reporter: attorney general air holder attended a counterterrorism summit in paris where they pledged to step up. on "face the nation" he said he's concerned about the threats posed by lone wolfs or clusters of people who have been radicalized. >> they have inspired people negatively from around the world to engage in these really small attacks that involve only one or two people a small number of arms that could have a devastating impact as we have seen in france. >> reporter: one of the biggest challenges will be disrupting the jihadist increasingly sophisticated online recruiting efforts. deputy director john miller. >> they're putting out products on video, on twitter, on instagram, on facebook, but particularly their video.

they're constructing messaging that rivals the ability of madison avenue. >> on saturday nypd issued an alert after this was issued on twitter calling for followers to kill police officers and civilians. representative michael mccaul says it's a serious concern. >> we don't have a good handle intelligence-wise who's on the ground in syria and iraq and yemen to identify them to put them on no-fly lists so they can't get in the country. >> with u.s. officials on high alert for paris-like attacks at home, the white house announced sunday president obama will host a summit next month in washington to address the root causes of violence andeolent extremism. julianna goldman in washington. a school in pakistan reopened this morning after a taliban massacre last month.

data. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. good morning, lauren. the price of gas keeping falling. it's down 20 cents. regular is $2.20 a gallon. that's the lowest in five years. if you plan on driving a chevy bolt, you don't have to worry about the price of gas. general motors plans to unveil its all electric car today at the detroit auto show. it can go 200 miles on a single charge. it costs about $30,000. the bolt is expected to go on sale in 2017. here on wall street stocks opened this morning after a mixed week. last week the dow ended up losing nearly 90 points. the s&p finished down nearly 13 points and the nasdaq lost 23 points. today president obama is expected to call for new laws on data privacy. the president wants congress to pass legislation requiring companies to inform customers within 30 days if their personal data has been hacked. the president will also propose a bill that would prevent companies from selling student

health officials fear thousands may have been exposed to the measles at disneyland and disney california adventure last month. most of those who got the disease were not vaccinated against it. carter evans reports. >> reporter: with tens of thousands of visitors from around the world in close contact every day, the happiest place on earth was an ideal place for the highly contagious disease to spread. according to epidemiologist dr. mark song. >> you can be reasonably near someone for even a few minutes over time and you can become infected. >> reporter: measles in the u.s. skyrocketed last year with 610 cases reported. that's the highest number since 2000 when the disease that causes a rash high fever, and

red watery eyes appeared to have been eliminated. >> the biggest concern issue you're going to have is a potential for more outbreaks. >> reporter: disneyland is located in orange county, california, with the highest reported cases of measles last year. it's also home to some of the state's highest numbers of unvaccinated children. of the 20 people infected by the current outbreak, at least 15 were not vaccinated. orange county pediatrician dr. bob sears is part of a small minority in the medical community that tells parents vaccinations are not always necessary. isn't it a doctor's respondent to offer their patients the best medical science can offer? >> you have to discuss the pros and the cons and most doctors only discuss the pros. >> reporter: the cdc says the risk of a serious allergic reaction to vaccines is one in a million, still when we spoke with dr. sears last summer, he said half of his patients choose not to vaccinate.
